Buchanan (knee) could return ‘sooner than later’

Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said he thinks Teddye Buchanan (knee) will be on the field “sooner than later.”

Buchanan was drafted in the fourth round of last year’s draft and wound up starting 13 of the 14 games he appeared in last season. As a rookie, he wound up racking up 93 tackles, five TFLs, and a half-sack before a torn ACL he suffered in Week 15 ended his season. This isn’t the first time we have heard somebody suggest Buchanan could return sooner than expected. Back in June, head coach Jesse Minter said Buchanan was “really far ahead of schedule” for a player who was injured in December. It would be surprising if Buchanan avoided the PUP list to start training camp, but it sounds like the second-year linebacker is trending in a positive direction with a little under two months to go before the start of the season.

Buchanan tore an ACL in December. He’s at OTAs, but isn’t described as actively participating in The Athletic’s story. We’d expect him to be a PUP List possibility when training camp starts given how late his ACL tear happened, but it’s not completely off the table that he’s ready to work in August.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports an MRI confirmed a torn ACL for Teddye Buchanan, ending his season.

Buchanan’s impressive rookie season comes to an end. The rookie fourth-rounder played his way into a starting role in training camp and wound up totaling 93 tackles, five TFLs, and one forced fumble in 14 games. Buchanan will now have to undergo surgery and rehab in hopes of being ready for next season, although, given the late nature of his injury, it wouldn’t be surprising if he wasn’t ready by Week 1.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Ravens fear LB Teddye Buchanan suffered a torn ACL in Week 15’s win over the Bengals.

This was to be expected after Buchanan’s knee buckled under him while covering a punt early in Sunday’s win. The rookie linebacker is scheduled to undergo more tests on Monday to confirm things, but it sounds like Buchanan is trending toward missing the remainder of the season. Buchanan is second on the team with 93 tackles this season and has also registered five TFLs to go with one forced fumble and one pass breakup. His absence would be a big loss for the Ravens who are fighting to stay in the playoff hunt.

Ravens LB Teddye Buchanan was carted from the field in Week 15’s game against the Bengals.

Buchanan was running down field with the punt coverage team when he went down on a non-contact play. The rookie linebacker was grabbing at his right knee before heading to the sideline and was later carted to the locker room. A rookie fourth-round pick, Buchanan has started 12 of the 13 games he’s appeared in this season, totaling 91 tackles, a half sack, and a forced fumble.

Ravens selected California LB Teddye Buchanan with the No. 129 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Buchanan (6’2/233) spent four seasons at UC-Davis before transferring to Cal for the 2024 season. A former high school quarterback, Buchanan successfully transferred his field-reading skills to his role as a coverage linebacker, yielding just a 7.9 percent target rate and a 56.3 percent catch rate. Buchanan led all linebackers at the NFL Scouting Combine in the vertical jump (40 inches) and tied for the positional lead in the bench press (26 repetitions). Buchanan can close on ball carriers quickly when he correctly reads the play, but can otherwise get lost in box traffic and lacks ideal thump. He uses his speed well as a blitzer and should be a standout player on special teams.

We’re not viewing this as a major cause for concern, the Bengals have no reason to rush Chase back on the field after he hyperextended his knee last week. If he’s still drawing limited tags on the official injury reports next week, then we can start Panic Mode. Taylor added that Higgins (head contusion) may also be limited this week. "(Tee) and Ja’Marr will be good at the end of the week,” said Taylor.

Texans GM Nick Caserio said there were “productive talks” on a contract extension for QB C.J. Stroud and that if a deal isn’t done before the start of the season, they’ll pick it up next offseason.

There’s really no reason for Stroud to want to negotiate off last year’s end-of-season performance, so we’re not stunned that there’s been no extension. It does sound like the Texans are at least laying the groundwork for next offseason. The general NFL expectation has been that Stroud will go into the year without an extension. The Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Alexander reported that league sources believe the Texans and Stroud’s camp “are not far off on what they think Stroud’s contract terms should look like and how much he should be paid per year.”
