NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport believes J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray will battle for the starting Vikings quarterback job “right up to the start of the season.”

We’ve done a lot of J.J. McCarthy blurbs this offseason and the vast majority of them from beats have McCarthy well behind Kyler Murray, while we also have a June quote from Kevin O’Connell saying “he doesn’t plan to take the competition until the end of camp.” It’s only the league-wide reporters who seem to give McCarthy much of a chance to win the job. Interesting coincidence, some would say.
Kittle's grass field comments raise NFLPA concerns
George Kittle's comments on grass fields sparked a broader discussion about player leadership, with Mike Florio arguing that major NFLPA initiatives struggle to gain traction without support from the NFL's biggest stars.

While Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are both expected to enter training camp in competition for the team’s QB1 role, it sounds like O’Connell would prefer to land on a decision sooner rather than later. Murray, by all accounts, appears to be the leader in the clubhouse to open the season as the starter, but McCarthy has received praise from teammates and coaches for his improvement as a passer and his ability to throw with a little more accuracy and touch. Currently going around the late ninth/early tenth round of best ball drafts, Murray could turn out to be a nice value if he wins the job and can return to the player who finished as a top-10 fantasy QB in fantasy points per game from 2020 to 2022 under KOC.

On one hand, it’s “just” OTAs. On the other hand, this is the second reporter to suggest there’s a noticeable difference between what Murray and McCarthy offer at the position. We’re less than a full week removed from ESPN’s Kevin Seifert saying the gap between the two QBs is “not close,” and now, Ragatz is all but suggesting the same in his most recent article. While there have been reports of McCarthy making strides as a passer this offseason, the bar has been set so low after 2025’s debacle, that any marginal improvements could garner praise for JJMC at this point. We’ll get a better sense of where things really stand between Murray and McCarthy when the pads come on in training camp, but Murray continues to sound like the clearcut QB1 to start the season, despite the Vikings’ best efforts to suggest the winner of this camp battle hasn’t already been determined.

It was only the Vikings’ second OTA of the spring and first that was open to the media. Still, while the Vikings gave both quarterbacks an equal opportunity, it doesn’t sound like a real competition, according to Seifert. “Murray made all of the best throws of the practice, demonstrating his downfield touch and accuracy,” he wrote. It was a reminder that McCarthy could continue making incremental improvements and still fall short of being able to match Murray, according to Seifert. A former Pro Bowler who led the Cardinals to the playoffs in 2021, Murray is being drafted outside the top-12 quarterbacks as he looks to bounce back in his first season with the Vikings.

McCarthy “has shown some things this spring that have been impressive so far.” Specifically, McCarthy is “layering the ball a little better” and is “not throwing a fastball all the time.” McCarthy’s accuracy and touch needed work, so this is good to hear. It still sounds like QB Kyler Murray is ahead of McCarthy in the battle for the starting role, but McCarthy is at least getting positive reviews at this time.
  • MIN Quarterback #9
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell attempted to address McCarthy’s accuracy woes by harping on the young quarterback’s footwork last season. He also tends to fire passes “on a line,” which only exacerbates his ball placement issues. Per Lewis, McCarthy has spent weeks with private throwing coach John Beck to improve both issues. Time will tell if Beck’s teachings have the desired effect. Lastly, Lewis believes that the way “McCarthy shows up to work every day and how his habits progress in his third season” is the final piece to the puzzle. The Vikings want their 2026 starter, be it McCarthy or QB Kyler Murray, “to lift the tide for the entire team.” McCarthy has been fully unable to do so thus far. Despite being the incumbent, McCarthy is currently viewed as the underdog in this summer’s quarterback battle. Avoid him in spring drafts for now.

Schefter said on air Thursday night that Murray should be consider the odds-on favorite to start for Minnesota in Week 1 after signing a one-year deal worth more than $36 million. J.J. McCarthy, however, will get a shot to compete for the starting gig after his disastrous, injury-marred 2025 campaign. McCarthy, 23, entering his third NFL season, would have to stay healthy this summer to have a shot at taking the team’s QB1 spot, and he would need to improve in every facet of the game, including accuracy. Dillon Gabriel was the only quarterback with a lower completion rate over expected in 2025.
  • MIN Quarterback #9
The front office brought in former Cardinals QB Kyler Murray this offseason. Murray, 28, is a far more accomplished player and can help stabilize the offense, whereas McCarthy’s ups and downs have proven costly. McCarthy seemingly faces an uphill battle to win the gig, though the team did invest the No. 10 overall pick in him in 2024.
  • MIN Quarterback
The battle for QB1 will be between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, with Florio believing the competition between the two will “commence during preseason practices and games.” This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but it lays to rest any assumptions that Murray will walk in as the unquestioned starter before camp. While we would expect Murray to ultimately win the job in runaway fashion, it sounds like McCarthy will be given every chance to prove he’s still the man for the job and a player worthy of the No. 10 overall pick the team used on him in 2024.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but in case there were any questions about Wentz impacting McCarthy, those can now be laid to rest. Seifert reports the decision to bring back Wentz is “about avoiding the depth emergencies” the Vikings experienced at QB in 2023 and 2025, which resulted from multiple injuries at the position. Wentz, 33, appeared in five games for the Vikings last season, going 2-3 as a starter while throwing for 1,216-6-5 on 169 attempts. A shoulder injury permanently sidelined him for the season after a Week 8 loss to the Chargers, but Wentz should be good to go at the start of next season, and could open the season as high as QB2 on the depth chart — assuming Kyler Murray wins the starting job.
  • MIN Quarterback #11
Wentz explored free agency for a few weeks and the Jets seemingly showed some interest before going in a different direction. He’s now back in Minnesota after throwing for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions in 2025. Wentz went 2-3 as the team’s starter and before a shoulder injury knocked him out for the year. His return casts some doubt on the idea of J.J. McCarthy as the team’s QB2 behind Kyler Murray. At best, Wentz will push McCarthy for that role during the offseason.

Seahawks WR Tory Horton (shin) resumed practicing at training camp on Friday.

Per The Tacoma News Tribune’s Gregg Bell, Horton is already “running smoothly” in his return from a November 2025 shin injury. That said, the Seahawks are still limiting his reps. Through the first two practices, he worked with QB Sam Darnold in group drills and fielded punts from P Michael Dickson before observing 11-on-11 drills. On Sunday, he spent time running routes with a trainer while his teammates ran 7-on-7s. Hopefully, the rest of his ramp-up period goes smoothly.

The Tacoma News Tribune’s Gregg Bell reports that Seahawks RB Jadarian Price is being targeted “a lot” in passing drills through the first three days of training camp.

Per Bell, Seahawks coaches are “maximizing” Price’s reps. He’s played on the first-, second- and third-team offenses in 11-on-11 drills thus far. If Price hopes to smash his fantasy football ADP, earning a role in the passing game sure would help. Although he is an accomplished runner and returner, he has just 15 receptions on his college resumé. We’ll continue to monitor Price’s progress in the coming days and weeks. Stay tuned.

ESPN’s Nate Taylor reports that Chiefs WR Cyrus Allen stood out at training camp on Sunday.

Chiefs rookies reported for training camp on July 24th, and although most veterans do not report until July 28th, quarterbacks arrive early, allowing rookies to take reps with QB Patrick Mahomes. Per Taylor, Allen and Mahomes linked up for one of Sunday’s highlights, a touchdown pass thrown to the back of the end zone in 7-on-7 drills. Taylor notes that coach Andy Reid “spent a few minutes giving Allen one-on-one coaching between repetitions, too.” Is this groundbreaking news? No. But, it is positive. The fifth-round rookie was a worthwhile late-round dart throw in dynasty rookie drafts this spring, and is a player to keep an eye on this summer.

Patriots placed EDGE Gabe Jacas on the non-football injury list.

Jacas has not yet practiced with his new team. A hamstring injury prevented him from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine and at Illinois’ Pro Day, and two teams noticed a labral tear in his shoulder and a stress fracture in his foot during pre-draft medical exams. He also underwent a cleanup procedure in his knee. It is unclear which injuries are still being rehabbed. Hopefully, he can begin practicing soon.

Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison sat out 11-on-11 red zone drills after suffering an apparent injury on Sunday.

A couple of Cardinals beat reporters chimed in on this one, but the situation is still a little fuzzy. It appears as though Harrison may have tweaked his back, but in a video posted by ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, Harrison can be seen pointing to his left ankle when he initially met with the Cardinals’ training staff. After that, Harrison did seem to focus his efforts on his back, walking around while attempting to stretch it out, at times “grimacing as he bends backward” and even attempting a yoga cobra pose on the sideline — not kidding. The Cardinals have the day off tomorrow and resume practicing on Tuesday. If we do not get an update before then, his participation that day will at least tell us something. Hopefully, this is a non-issue.

49ers CB Nate Hobbs did not practice on Sunday.

Hobbs’ one-off season with the Packers was derailed by a recurring knee injury. Hopefully, this isn’t the same issue. He currently projects as a second-stringer. 49ers backup OT Vederian Lowe left practice early with an apparent right ankle issue.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner reports that 49ers RB Jordan James “appears to be” the team’s RB2 right now.

Wagoner said he saw “some good stuff” from James as a rusher and receiver today, but noted it’s still early. Today was the 49ers’ first training camp practice. Wagoner’s notes seemed to indicate rookie RB Kaelon Black is in the No. 3 spot while veteran RB Patrick Taylor Jr. sits at No. 4. Things can change quickly, but today’s report backs up what we catalogued here from March through May — that James is next up behind starting RB Christian McCaffrey. He is a worthwhile late-round dart throw in summer drafts right now.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan briefly attended practice on Sunday.

Day-to-day updates may not be necessary here, but this seems like an important first step for the 49ers’ head coach. Shanahan was only an observer today. He arrived after the period where reporters are allowed to record videos and take photos, sporting a soft cast on his left hand and wearing sunglasses. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows said Shanahan’s facial swelling seems to have subsided, which is nice to hear. He stood with general manager John Lynch, watching team drills and departed early, before practice ended. Assistant head coach and OL coach Chris Foerster is serving as the team’s acting head coach for now. Shanahan is expected to be ready to coach in Week 1 against the Rams. Hopefully, a smooth recovery allows him to resume coaching soon.

Rams placed OL Justin Dedich on the non-football injury list.

Dedich played in 16 games for the Rams last year, including six starts. The then-second-year player earned a 69.7 PFF run-blocking grade along the way. The Rams also placed rookie DB Al’zillion Hamilton on the physically unable to perform list.

Broncos placed LB Jordan Turner on the non-football injury list.

The Denver Post’s Luca Evans describes the development as being “potentially quite notable” for the Broncos’ inside linebacker depth. He believes Turner “had a real shot” to win the No. 3 role behind LB Alex Singleton and LB Justin Strnad. Perhaps he still can. Only time will tell. The Broncos also placed OG Nick Gargiulo on the physically unable to perform list.
