Rodrigue: Rams may employ a WR3 committee in 2026

The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue believes the Rams may take a committee approach to the WR3 role this season.

Rodrigue listed WR Konata Mumpfield and WR Jordan Whittington as candidates for the gig, notably excluding rookie WR CJ Daniels. Daniels was viewed as the potential WR3 due to his blocking ability earlier this year. Rodrigue says it is instead Whittington who could serve as the “3B” blocker. Mumpfield reportedly “looks the part” as the “3A” receiving component. Will he return fantasy value reliably? Probably not. Earlier this month, Rodrigue’s colleague, Nate Atkins, said Mumpfield could be the next man up on the perimeter if WRs Puka Nacua or Davante Adams miss time. Rodrigue’s comments seemingly confirm this.

Mumpfield enters his second NFL season after posting a 10/92/1 receiving line in the regular season last year. He chipped in three catches for 22 yards in the playoffs. Were he to get a spot start, he is not guaranteed to be fantasy-relevant. Atkins lists sixth-round rookie WR CJ Daniels as the most likely player to assume No. 3 wide receiver duties, primarily due to his blocking. He also has some contested-catch ability. Mumpfield is a name to know for 2026, but he is unlikely to meaningfully contribute in the box score if Nacua and Adams are healthy.
  • LA Wide Receiver
The statement comes with positives and negatives. On the one hand, Atkins believes the sixth-round rookie is the favorite to start in three-wide receiver sets. On the other hand, Daniels’ fit is due partially to his blocking ability. Getting on the field is the first step toward fantasy-relevance, though. Daniels is a player to watch closely in the coming months.
  • LA Wide Receiver
Daniels (6’2”/202) is a sixth-year prospect who made stops at Liberty (2020-2023) and LSU (2024) before finishing his career at Miami in 2025. What Daniels lacks in speed (4.58 40-yard dash), he makes up for with creative route running and an impressive ability to pull off contested catches (62.3 percent contested catch rate, per PFF). He’s a good downfield threat and broke out for 55/1,067/10 in 2023 at Liberty, but Daniels’ production fell off in his final two seasons when the level of competition was ramped up while playing for LSU and Miami. Given what we saw from Daniels in his post-Liberty career, it seems unlikely he will look like the player we saw in his breakout season when he’s facing NFL-caliber talent on every snap. He has very limited experience on special teams, returning just three punts in his career and never logging a single snap on the kick/punt coverage units. Despite his sixth-round pedigree, he’ll face an uphill battle to make a 53-man roster in his rookie season.

The Jaguars do not use top-30 visits. They prefer to keep their pre-draft information gathering under wraps. Jaguars general manager James Gladstone during his nine-year run with the Rams. Daniels revealed his meeting with the team in a recent interview. He has also met with the Titans, Broncos and Panthers. Daniels posted a 50/557/7 receiving line in his fifth and final college season. Shipley believes Daniels (6'2/202) could provide a big-bodied, physical element that is currently missing in the Jaguars’ wide receiver room. The Jaguars notably tried to sign Seahawks WR Jake Bobo (6'4/207) earlier this offseason.
  • LA Wide Receiver #15
He also adds that a Day 2 selection is in play. Neither Davante Adams nor Puka Nacua are likely going to see their 2026 production threatened by a rookie wideout, but Adams is in the final year of his contract and the depth at the position hasn’t shown much for the Rams. Konata Mumpfield, who played outside while Adams was dealing with a hamstring injury late in the season, would figure to lose major dynasty stock if the Rams spent an early pick on a wideout.
  • LA Wide Receiver #88
From Weeks 1-12, the 2024 sixth-round pick was Los Angeles’ No. 3 receiver and played 52.4 percent of the Rams’ snaps. His fantasy relevancy peaked when the Rams headed to London without Puka Nacua and Whittington managed to reward managers with a 2/9 dud. Over the final five games of the season, dealing with a knee injury, he managed just 44 offensive snaps. Whittington isn’t a must-hold in dynasty leagues at this point, but it’s possible he was simply not himself while trying to play hurt. Either way, it’s hard to imagine much of a 2026 fantasy role for him here.
  • LA Wide Receiver #15
Mumpfield had an eight-target game in Davante Adams’ hamstring-related absence and certainly appears to be the main backup wideout on the outside after the Rams picked him in the seventh round of last year’s draft. He finished the year with a 10/92/1 line. There’s not an obvious fantasy vacuum for him to step into even if he managed to be the main third receiver in 2026 — especially given how successful three tight-end looks were for the Rams this year. Still, he’s an interesting dynasty bench stash after making good progress in his rookie year.
  • LA Tight End #18
Rams WR Jordan Whittington (knee) was initially listed as questionable, but later ruled out. Ferguson earned four targets in each of his last two games, catching five for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Having him on the field would be great for the Rams’ creative tight end usage. Whittington serves only as a rotational weapon at wide receiver.
  • LA Tight End #18
Ferguson followed up his Tuesday DNP with another DNP on Wednesday. WR Jordan Whittington (knee) and OL Kevin Dotson (ankle) also remained out. Official injury statuses will come out on Thursday but all three players are on the wrong side of questionable for the Wild Card round against the Panthers.
  • LA Tight End #18
Ferguson sat out Week 18 after being a late addition to the injury report with a hamstring injury. He starts out the week listed as DNP as the Rams held a walkthrough on Tuesday. Also DNP were WR Jordan Whittington (knee) and OL Kevin Dotson (ankle). The Rams’ key offensive players will have a few days to practice ahead of a Saturday Wild Card showdown against the Panthers.

J.K. Dobbins said “I feel great” when asked about his health after suffering a soft tissue injury earlier in camp.

Dobbins said he was unsure if he would play in the preseason, but it’s safe to assume the Broncos’ RB1 won’t be taking the field until the regular season. Dobbins exited camp with a soft tissue injury back on August 10th, but didn’t miss any significant time, so it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to hear he’s feel good with less than a month to go before the start of the season. Dobbins is expected to serve as the Broncos’ primary back on early downs and will be on the RB2/RB3 radar for fantasy this season.

Speaking Saturday during the Browns pre-game show on 92.3 The Fan, HC Todd Monken said he does “not anticipate the QB decision going past early of next week.”

It sounds like Saturday’s game against the Bills is set up to be the final dress rehearsal for Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders before Monken decides who will start in Week 1 against the Jaguars. Sanders is expected to start on Saturday against the Bills, with Watson expected to take the field in the second half of Saturday’s game. Neither quarterback looked particularly impressive in the first preseason game against the Bears, with both committing turnovers in their respective halves. Whoever gets the nod as the starter will likely sit in the team’s preseason finale against the Patriots next week.

NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reports Josh Allen and “most Bills starters” will sit for Saturday’s preseason game against the Browns.

After a good week of joint practices against the Browns, the Bills are expected to sit most of their starters while giving their depth players a chance to show what they have. Veteran QB Kyle Allen will draw the start on Saturday, with backup Shane Buechele also expected to see work. The Bills’ decision to sit their starters should come as good news for Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson, who are still battling for the QB1 job, with Sanders in line to start with the first-team offense.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Jayden Daniels is expected to start in Saturday’s preseason game against the Lions.

In addition to Daniels, the Commanders are also expected to play Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs, giving us the first look at the team’s revamped passing game under new offensive coordinator David Blough, with most of its starters on the field. We wouldn’t expect Daniels and company to play more than a series or two, but this will be Daniels’ first game since Week 14 of last season.

Drew Allar completed 11-of-23 passes for 110 yards in Friday’s preseason game against the Jets, adding one rush for four additional yards.

Allar struggled more in his second taste of preseason action, taking three sacks while completing only 47.8 percent of his passes, but were it not for three dropped passes and some garbage-time heaves on the game’s final drive, his box score would have looked a little better. Allar’s most impressive throw came on his second drive of the game, when he evaded pressure and ran left to throw a 38-yard ball down the sideline that was placed neatly between two defenders to receiver Lake McRee for a big gain. In the fourth quarter, he would connect with Isaiah Winstead on a 17-yard gain, again on a tight pass near the sideline for his second-longest completion of the night. Allar fared better than second-year QB Will Howard, who completed 10-of-15 passes for 74 yards but was picked off twice in the first half. We would expect both quarterbacks to get extended opportunities in next week’s preseason finale against the Bills on Thursday. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac, the Steelers are planning on keeping both Howard and Allar on the roster, but Mason Rudolph will serve as the team’s QB2 behind Aaron Rodgers.

Broncos RB Jonah Coleman rushed three times for nine yards in Friday’s preseason game against the Packers.

Coleman’s physicality jumps off the screen. The sturdy rookie running back effectively wielded a spin move to shed defenders on multiple plays after he took the field for the Broncos’ second drive. The Broncos could end up using a three-player rotation, but Coleman’s three-down skill set and consistent coaching praise make him a must-stash player in 12-team leagues.

Broncos QB Bo Nix completed 6-of-9 passes for 76 yards and one touchdown in Friday’s preseason game against the Packers.

Nix looked mobile and eager to chuck it downfield. He even had a few overthrows, which we suppose is a good thing for a quarterback who spent the offseason rehabbing an ankle injury. The Broncos quarterback linked up with new WR Jaylen Waddle for a 35-yard gain down the seam and targeted WR Courtland Sutton a couple of times along the sideline. He found tonight’s starting RB RJ Harvey speeding down the right side of the field on a wheel route, and linked up with the second-year running back for a 21-yard touchdown to conclude the first drive. New OC Davis Webb regularly dialed up play action, which is great for fantasy purposes. Nix looks like a low-end QB1.

Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd rushed five times for 15 yards in Friday’s preseason game against the Broncos, adding one reception for 11 yards and one touchdown.

Lloyd played on 5-of-7 snaps during the first drive, giving way to RB Chris Brooks for third- and fourth-and-inches. Lloyd looks fast and powerful and can be treated as a high-end bench stash with potential standalone value. His touchdown occurred on a nifty catch-and-run play over the middle. Starting RB Josh Jacobs (groin) did not play.

Broncos CB Riley Moss exited Friday’s preseason game against the Packers after suffering an apparent ribs injury.

Broncos CB Pat Surtain appeared to force a fumble from Packers WR Christian Watson moments after Watson hauled in the pass. Moss dove on it, injuring himself in the process, but Watson was eventually ruled down by contact. Bummer. Moss was grabbing at the right side of his rib cage as he entered the blue medical tent. If Moss misses time, the Broncos have CB Jahdae Barron waiting in the wings.

Nick Chubb retired after eight seasons in the NFL.

One of the best rushers of the modern era, Chubb retires with four Pro Bowl appearances and one second-team All-Pro nod on his resumé. The Browns drafted Chubb with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent seven seasons with them, clearing 1,000 yards on the ground four times, and spent his final NFL season with the Texans. Chubb retires with 7,349 rushing yards, 54 rushing touchdowns, 141 receptions, 1,109 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.
