SNY’s Connor Hughes said it’s “clear Cam Skattebo is the top back” for the Giants in training camp.

According to Hughes, Skattebo is “the first up in almost every running drill,” and he has also handled the majority of carries in practice. While it’s certainly an encouraging sign for Skattebo’s usage, Hughes also notes that the preferred options in the passing game are Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary. If the Giants were to dial back Skattebo’s role in the receiving game, it could deal a bit of a blow to his fantasy stock. He was on a 17-game pace to catch 51 passes last season, and his work in the passing game made up 43.7 percent of his fantasy scoring in PPR leagues last year. Skattebo’s role as an early-down grinder and goal-line back should be more than enough to satisfy fantasy managers this season, but a reduced role in the passing game would put a bit of a cap on his ceiling.

Duggan buried this thought in a lengthy social media post last Wednesday. He says Giants RBs Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy “are fine,” but notes that the front office was “open to upgrading to a premier back,” referring to Cardinals rookie RB Jeremiyah Love. Duggan “could see a vet signing,” like free agent RB Najee Harris (Achilles) once he is healthy, “or a trade.” A veteran like Harris would slide into the RB3 role, and might occasionally steal enough touches to hurt Skattebo’s weekly ceiling outcomes. A premier back would have a much larger impact, but a player like that would obviously be much harder to acquire at this point. That outcome seems far less likely at this point, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Giants added another name to the backfield.

Skattebo was already taking 11-on-11 reps before the end of the early offseason and did a backflip at Brian Burns’ celebrity softball game, while ESPN’s Jordan Raanan believes he will be a full participant when training camp begins. Skattebo’s contact-heavy style opens up some fantasy football questions about his longevity, especially given his injury last year, but he played to a low-end RB1 ranking most weeks under Brian Daboll after taking over the lead role. Currently heading off the board towards the back of the top 50 picks by ADP and bolstered by his head coach’s confidence, it sure seems like the Giants run game is trending towards being Skattebo-forward again this year.

He notes that Tracy “could be” the second option in a backfield committee with Cam Skattebo, but it sounds like we shouldn’t necessarily count on Tracy to win that role. With a new coaching staff in town, it’s possible Tracy falls out of favor. The good news for Tracy is that the Giants didn’t add anyone new to the backfield in free agency or the draft. Tracy’s role dwindling would be good news for Cam Skattebo, assuming Skattebo is healthy.
  • NYG Running Back #44
It has always seemed likely that Skattebo will be ready for training camp, plus or minus an off-day here or there to help with recovery, but this pretty much guarantees it. Skattebo escaped the offseason as a big fantasy football winner since the Giants didn’t add a real competitor for the starting job. It remains to be seen if he can hold off Tyrone Tracy for a full-time role, but he should at least start the year as the lead of a committee.

In an 11-second video posted to X by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Skattebo can be seen running a route down the left sideline before hauling in a long pass. The second-year running back is working his way back from a fractured ankle he suffered in Week 8 of last season, and looked to be running at or close to full speed in the clip. Speaking last month, Skattebo said he expects to be healthy for Week 1, and he appears to be trending in that direction. We’ll get a better sense of his availability when training camp starts, but if Skattebo can avoid the PUP list at the start of camp, we can safely assume he’ll be all systems go, barring any setbacks. Skattebo projects as an RB2 in what is expected to be a run-heavy offense in John Harbaugh’s first season.

Others reported seeing Skattebo sporting a jersey and helmet, talking to OC Matt Nagy and working with trainers. Stapleton’s phrasing sort of makes it sound like Skattebo literally snuck off and took a few reps. Either way, he seems to have made it through today’s organized team activities session just fine. This is the first time reporters have seen Skattebo suited up for practice since he suffered his season-ending injury. He has maintained that he will be on the field for the Giants in Week 1. He is seemingly on track to do so.

“It sounds like we’re not going to be throwing the ball a lot,” Dart said during a recent town hall with Giants fans and reporters when asked about how New York’s offense might look under new OC Matt Nagy. “We’re going to keep giving it to [Cam Skattebo] until they can stop it.” Skattebo said during the town hall that he was still learning to trust his surgically repaired ankle. He pledged to be ready to go for Week 1. If he’s not fully healthy for the season opener, look for Tyrone Tracy and perhaps Devin Singletary to take on bigger workloads.

Skattebo during a Monday town hall event said he is still learning to trust his surgically repaired ankle and conceded he’s “a little ways out” from a full recovery from a horrific lower leg injury last October. “Obviously there’s ups and downs in the injury process and coming back and rehabbing, but the mental battle has been the hardest part: making sure that I trust it fully,” Skattebo said. Look for the Giants to ease the second-year back into action this summer as he recovers from his ankle injury. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Skattebo sees a limited snap share to begin the regular season, leaving Tyrone Tracy as the Giants’ presumptive lead back, with Devin Singletary sprinkled in. Skattebo in 2025 ranked 27th out of 55 qualifying backs in rush yards after contact per carry, just behind Tony Pollard. The Athletic’s Dan Duggan said in February that Giants head coach John Harbaugh “figures to encourage a more ground-based attack” in 2026.

This timeline should allow Skattebo to participate in organized team activities, which typically occur in late May. The burly second-year back resumed running on Wednesday, and Skattebo put his speed at about “75.0 percent.” He has not yet resumed “exploding” forward, and is instead focused on “the jog and the striding.” After a hairy free agency situation in which the Giants were rumored to be interested in Kenneth Walker, Skattebo currently sits atop the Giants’ depth chart. He could warrant RB2 treatment if the Giants abstain from adding meaningful backfield competition for him in the 2026 NFL Draft.
  • SEA Running Back #9
Walker was reportedly on the Giants’ “wish list” this offseason but the going rate on a contract extension simply got too high, with the prevailing feeling now one in which the Giants simply can’t come to terms with. Even so, the fact that the Giants are seriously pursuing running backs through free agency paints a dark picture regarding their level of enthusiasm in continuing forward with Cam Skattebo in a workhorse role. Stay tuned through the opening of the legal tampering period Monday as numerous fantasy-relevant situations are sure to change.

Tank Dell (knee) practiced on Wednesday.

It will likely be a limited session for Dell, coming off a catastrophic 2024 knee injury that wiped out his entire 2025 campaign. Texans general manager Nick Caserio said in late July that Dell would be limited in practice for a few weeks as he works his way back from the career-threatening injury. Even if Dell avoids setbacks in the coming weeks, he’s a long shot to be anything more than Houston’s third or fourth pass-catching option to begin the season.

NBC Sports’ Connor Rogers reports Geno Smith in training camp has shown “consistent effort ... to challenge all three levels of the field.”

Rogers said Smith in a recent camp practice challenged the Jets secondary downfield enough to open up short-area opportunities for his pass catchers. “He wants to push the ball down the field to the WRs and hopefully that opens up the quick underneath throws,” Rogers said, adding that the Jets tight ends and rookie WR Omar Cooper were functioning as the main short-area pass catchers. Coming off a disastrous 2025 campaign in Vegas, Geno will look to bounce back with the Jets this season. During his run with the Seahawks, Geno was among the league’s most accurate passers.

The Athletic’s Paul Dehner, Jr. reports Chase Brown has been “at the center of unique twists” in the Bengals offense during training camp.

Brown, according to Dehner, is “being used all over the formation, similar to the way Ja’Marr Chase has been deployed in recent years. Brown lines up in the slot and runs a slant one play, then takes a jet sweep the next. He’s part of 20 personnel with two running backs, motions into the backfield, behind a fullback and almost any other spot imaginable.” The Bengals are preparing to use motion at a much higher rate than they have during the Joe Burrow era, especially when Burrow is under center. It’s led to some early camp struggles, per Dehner. “We all got to prepare a little bit more, at least I do, a lot for the motions and playing F and wherever they are putting me takes a little extra study time because I haven’t really done that before,” Brown said. “It’s cool they trust me doing that and believe in my skill set enough. It’s been fun.” Dehner said the team’s “pre-snap eye candy and under-center emphasis have helped establish a refreshed run game” ahead of the 2026 season. Brown’s pass game involvement should give him every chance to be a top-5 back in PPR formats.

Buccaneers WR Tez Johnson left Tuesday’s practice early with a groin injury.

Johnson left practice early Tuesday to get treatment for an apparent strain. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said the 24-year-old wideout is dealing with a groin injury. The severity of the injury is unclear as Bowles said it’s too early to tell if any of the team’s top four wide receivers would miss next week’s joint practices with the Jets. Chris Godwin, Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan also missed practice out of maintenance and precaution. With Johnson and David Sills also exiting practice, rookie Ted Hurst saw a boost in practice reps.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports free agent TE Zach Ertz (ACL) is “cleared for all football activities.”

Ertz tore his ACL in Week 14 last season with the Commanders. Schefter reports the 35-year-old is ready for football activities and was catching passes from Andrew Luck at Stanford on Tuesday. He caught 50 passes for 504 yards and four touchdowns last season, seeing at least 70 targets in each of the last two seasons with the Commanders. Ertz has expressed a desire to continue playing and Schefter reports the veteran is “expected to be ready to sign in mid-August.” His top-15 fantasy tight end days are behind him, but Ertz can certainly offer some help in the tight end landscape this season, pending his landing spot.

Buccaneers WRs Chris Godwin, Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan did not practice Tuesday to manage injuries and soreness.

Fox Sports’ Greg Auman reported the three lead Buccaneers receivers got the day off Tuesday. For Godwin, it is a veteran maintenance day as he aims to open the season fully healthy; expect him to see more maintenance days heading into preseason. Egbuka and McMillan are dealing with lower-body soreness and were held out of practice out of precaution. Ultimately, no major injury concerns as the Bucs play it safe with their top three wideouts in training camp.

NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reports the Browns will alternate QBs Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson as preseason starters.

Wolfe said Browns head coach Todd Monken told him the team will start “one quarterback the first preseason game, the other one will start the second one, and most likely the leader of the competition is going to start the third.” It sounds like Monken is planning to give both Watson and Sanders a chance to compete and build chemistry in camp and preseason before determining a leader in the quarterback race. The Browns’ quarterback room is one of the few truly dead-even quarterback competitions occurring in camp and fantasy managers can stay tuned to preseason play to assess if Watson or Sanders has the edge to start Week 1.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton said EDGE Nik Bonitto (lower leg) will be “fine” after leaving practice early Tuesday.

Bonitto suffered a lower leg injury in drills Tuesday and did not return to practice. He limped off under his own power surrounded by the Broncos’ training staff. Payton said he had “no updates” on the 26-year-old pass rusher but that Bonitto will be “fine.” It is unclear how severe his injury is, but based on Payton’s response, it seems Bonitto will be fine in the long term and may only miss some camp time.

Commanders CB Ahkello Witherspoon retired after nine seasons in the NFL.

Witherspoon was placed on the reserve/retired list Tuesday, just a few months after initially signing with the Commanders. The 31-year-old entered the league with the 49ers as a 2017 third-rounder. Witherspoon tallied 60 passes defended and 13 interceptions over his career, spending four seasons in San Francisco, two with the Steelers, and the past three seasons with the Rams.

The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy reports a lot of targets to Isaac TeSlaa in the early portion of training camp have been broken up “due to a lack of separation.”

We weren’t expecting a major target share for TeSlaa anyway in this offense, and he makes his living making contested catches, but it’s still a little disappointing that he hasn’t taken more of a step forward from his rookie season so far. TeSlaa is probably only a consideration in deeper leagues at this time.
