Panthers are expected to sign veteran free agent QB Kyle Trask.

The move makes sense considering Trask served as the backup quarterback in Tampa under Dave Canales. Trask remains unlikely to crack camp as a member of the 53-man roster, most likely simply providing additional depth at the position through the end of camp. The move that makes the most procedural sense would be to retain undrafted free agent Haynes King on the practice squad while Kenny Pickett serves as the primary backup to Bryce Young.

Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, Easton Stick will also have a tryout during mincamp. Trask re-signed with the Bucs last offseason but failed to crack the roster at the end of training camp. He later joined the Falcons’ practice squad. The Saints currently have Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson as options to back up Tyler Shough.

None of the four of them signed yet, so it’s possible the Colts are just doing some homework on a potential Anthony Richardson replacement at backup quarterback rather than settling for this pool of candidates. Trask hadn’t had a workout since being released by the Bucs at last cuts.
  • FA Quarterback #2
The Buccaneers will work out an injury settlement for Trask, as he’s currently dealing with a shoulder issue. A second-round pick for some reason in 2021, Trask has been the backup quarterback for the Bucs over the last four seasons, but that honor will now apparently go to Teddy Bridgewater. Trask is likely a practice squad player for a new organization in the coming days.

Trask was initially drafted in the second round of the 2021 draft, spending the last four years as the Buccaneers’ backup quarterback. He’s only thrown 11 passes in the NFL, completing four of them for 28 yards. Trask will backup Baker Mayfield again for 2025.

Mayfield was sacked on consecutive plays and was brutally twisted up and taken down on the second one. After the second sack, Mayfield’s right ankle was accidentally stepped on by Jadeveon Clowney, slamming the outer side of Mayfield’s right ankle down to the ground, pinned underneath Clowney’s body weight. Update: Mayfield returned to play but immediately threw an interception.

Kyle Trask is expected to get most of the Bucs’ first-team reps in practice this week with Mayfield struggling through a rib injury he picked up in last week’s loss to the Saints. Tampa head coach Todd Bowles said he expects Mayfield to play in the team’s critical Week 18 game against the Panthers. Mayfield’s Friday practice status will likely dictate whether he will be active against Carolina. “I’ll do everything I can to be out there,” Mayfield said Wednesday. “That’s for sure. Division on the line. Playoff hopes on the line. Going back to Carolina? Yeah, I’ll do everything. I can.” Mayfield has the NFL’s sixth highest drop back EPA this season.

Mayfield suffered the injury while attempting a sneak at the goal line. He stayed down for a while after getting piled on by a few players near the end zone. He eventually limped off the field, clearly in a lot of pain. Kyle Trask is now under center for the Bucs.

And there ends the most dismal training camp competition in NFL history. Mayfield gets the nod for opening day even after Trask impressed in preseason Week 2 against the Jets, completing 20 of his 28 passes for 218 yards and a score. Mayfield is probably the best bet for Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to prove viable for those who draft them as a WR3 or WR4 in redraft leagues. Mayfield is nothing more than a superflex flier.
  • TB Quarterback #2
Trask served as the QB2 in Tampa Bay’s opening preseason game a week ago but got the start this time around. He played a half of football before hitting the pines, but a neck injury to John Wolford brought Trask back onto the field in the fourth quarter. Trask took care of the ball while throwing a handful of strikes for gains of 20 or more yards. The Bucs’ coaching staff has made it clear that they value ball security highly and Trask turned things around this week after throwing an ugly interception a week ago. Baker Mayfield remains the favorite to start in Week 1, but Trask has at least made things a legitimate competition in Tampa Bay.
  • TB Quarterback #2
Trask’s starting chances took a hit with an interception on his first drive. It didn’t get much better from there, with Trask taking three sacks over his next three series before exiting. The third-year quarterback connected on a pair of deep shots, completing two 20-yard passes and averaging 9.9 YPA but this was a step back for Trask as he competes with Mayfield for the Bucs’ starting job. Trask is expected to get the start in Tampa’s second preseason game.

Bears RB Kyle Monangai is expected to miss multiple weeks with a hyperextended knee, reports ESPN’s Jeremey Fowler.

Monangai suffered a right knee injury when he was tackled from behind by Grady Jarrett on Sunday. Despite earlier reports that Monangai would be fine, he’s now set to miss multiple weeks with a hyperextended knee, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Roschon Johnson would be in line to serve as the primary backup to D’Andre Swift for the first few weeks if the Bears don’t bring in another running back.

The Charlotte Observer’s Alex Zietlow said the Panthers have not determined when Darren Waller will make his debut.

While the team has yet to decide when Waller will make his 2026 debut, Waller said his readiness for the upcoming season is “night and day from last year to this year.” Last season, Waller was returning from retirement and needed a lot of time to ramp up. Now, it sounds like Waller could be in a position to at least be ready for the start of the season for a Panthers team that’s in need of help at the tight end position. While his days as a weekly TE1 are well behind him, Waller could have some upside as a matchup-based streamer once we get a better sense of his role in the offense.

Jaylen Waddle returned to practice on Monday.

Waddle missed an extended amount of time due to what was being classified as a muscle strain by head coach Sean Payton. The veteran receiver officially returned to the practice field on Monday, with Payton saying after practice that Waddle was “coming along really well.” We’ll see how things go for Waddle in the coming days, but hopefully this issue is behind him. Waddle is expected to play a big role in the Broncos’ passing game this season and profiles as a solid WR2.

Giants HC John Harbaugh said he doesn’t think Malik Nabers (knee) is “at full-speed yet” after his first day in 11-on-11 drills.

It was a big day for Nabers, as the star receiver participated in 11-on-11s for the first time since suffering a torn ACL last season. While he may not be up to full-speed just yet, it has been a positive summer for Nabers overall. He managed to avoid the PUP list to open camp and has not suffered any setbacks since then. He’s still sporting the red non-contact jersey, but all signs continue to point to Nabers being ready for Week 1 if he continues on his current trajectory.

Jaguars HC Liam Coen said he is “trending toward” playing the starters in Friday’s preseason game against the Panthers.

The Jaguars didn’t play any starters in last week’s preseason game against the Saints, but Coen said that because they couldn’t do a padded practice on Monday with the Panthers, he may consider playing his starters a bit on Friday in order to get some “good (players) on good (players)” facing one another. If the Jaguars do play their starters this week, it will be their only taste of preseason action, as Coen has already said he won’t be playing them in the third preseason game.

Rams HC Sean McVay said Puka Nacua is still dealing with soreness in his groin.

Nacua suffered a groin injury nearly a week ago and is still dealing with soreness. McVay said last week that he expects Nacua to return sometime this week, but the starting receiver was not on the field during Monday’s practice. McVay didn’t say which day he expects Nacua to be back, noting that the team prefers to “err on the side of caution” with soft-tissue injuries.

Buccaneers HC Todd Bowles said he’s “not sure at this time” if Emeka Egbuka (toe) will be available in Week 1.

This comes just days after it was reported that the Buccaneers “are very optimistic” about Egbuka’s Week 1 availability. The second-year receiver has been dealing with a sprained toe that he suffered on Wednesday and hasn’t practiced since. The Buccaneers are 27 days away from their Week 1 game against the Bengals, which will hopefully give Egbuka plenty of time to heal up. Egbuka profiles as a solid WR2 for this season with Mike Evans now with the 49ers.

The Athletics Chad Graff believes the Patriots’ backfield “will be a 50-50 split” this season.

TreVeyon Henderson’s involvement in the offense could hinge heavily on his pass-protection performance, but Graff believes that if Henderson can hold up in those situations, he and Rhamondre Stevenson are looking at a 50-50 split. In his article over at The Athletic, Graff says the Patriots “want to take advantage of Henderson’s big-play ability, but they believe in Stevenson a bit more to get what’s blocked.” Henderson and Stevenson should both see plenty of work to have standalone fantasy value, but they could prove frustrating to roster in start/sit leagues if their roles become difficult to predict on a week-to-week basis.

Bears signed DE Marcus Davenport, formerly of the Lions.

Davenport reunites with current Bears DC and former Saints HC Dennis Allen. The 29-year-old vet spent the last two seasons with the Lions but appeared in only 10 games due to injuries. He totaled seven QB pressures and one sack last season and will likely work as a situational pass rusher this season for the Bears.
