The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reports Kaelon Black is operating as the 49ers lead back with Christian McCaffrey (tightness) sidelined.

Black had missed two weeks with a thigh injury before emerging as the clear top running back with McCaffrey sidelined. Barrows said Black “certainly didn’t look rusty, taking an early carry to the left for 50 yards and showing violence and strength on several ensuing runs. Black also had a catch at the goal line in a red zone drill.” Niners players and coaches were impressed by Black, who was taken with the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. “I thought he looked good hitting the hole and running hard,” Brock Purdy said. “You could tell there was a different level of intensity when he touched the ball.” With Jordan James struggling through a broken rib, Black will have a real chance to establish himself as the Niners’ RB2 ahead of the regular season. Black should be stashed in deeper fantasy formats in case CMC, 30, misses time in 2026.
Hall worth drafting at discount ADP after injury
Denny Carter believes fantasy managers should still "buy the dip" on Jets RB Breece Hall following his groin injury, a setback that makes him a draft value at his current ADP.

He missed about two weeks of camp. There’s still time for him to impress the coaches, but Black probably needs to leave a lasting impression over these next two weeks to make a dent in Jordan James’ RB2 status.

The injuries continue to mount for the 49ers early in camp. Evans is reportedly dealing with a quad strain that we will hopefully learn more about later, and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling (hamstring) and Kaelon Black (adductor) are also missing Monday’s practice due to injuries. The recent string of injuries now makes for four receivers the Niners have seen go down in camp, with Christian Kirk (calf) and Ricky Pearsall (knee) both being injured last week. We will check back in when we receive updates on the status of these players.
  • SF Running Back #29
James possibly had an edge over rookie Kaelon Black for the No. 2 gig in San Francisco heading into camp, but that is entirely out the window now. With Isaac Guerendo also injured, Black is already the last man standing behind Christian McCaffrey. With a decent training camp, he will enter the season as the backup to the most valuable running back in all of fantasy football. Black is officially one of the better late-round dart throws, particularly in leagues with deeper benches.

Wagoner said he saw “some good stuff” from James as a rusher and receiver today, but noted it’s still early. Today was the 49ers’ first training camp practice. Wagoner’s notes seemed to indicate rookie RB Kaelon Black is in the No. 3 spot while veteran RB Patrick Taylor Jr. sits at No. 4. Things can change quickly, but today’s report backs up what we catalogued here from March through May — that James is next up behind starting RB Christian McCaffrey. He is a worthwhile late-round dart throw in summer drafts right now.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan broke the news this afternoon. This is a bummer. Earlier this month, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur said he believed Guerendo was “buried” on the depth chart and will likely “be looking for a new team” at some point. The team could end up releasing him with an injury settlement, but we suppose some sort of reserve list placement is possible. 49ers RBs Jordan James and Kaelon Black can be expected to compete for RB2 duties at this time. The team also signed RBs Jordan Mims and Jermar Jefferson today.
  • SF Running Back
Shockingly and inexplicably the second running back off the draft board in the 2026 NFL Draft, Black out of Indiana appears to be a solid-enough blocker who might earn snaps behind Christian McCaffrey this season. Jordan James, Barrow added, remains the likely RB2 behind McCaffrey. Black’s blocking ability “won’t make him popular in fantasy football circles, but it’s something a rookie needs to prove before he gets meaningful snaps.” In 32 pass-blocking opportunities in 2025, Black did not allow a quarterback hit while giving up two QB pressures. If he proves himself a reliable blocker in training camp, Black could see significant snaps in the 49ers offense.
  • SF Running Back
Black is expected to compete with second-year RB Jordan James in training camp for the primary backup role. James, 22, played just three offensive snaps last year, though The Athletic’s Vic Tafur said in February that “it seems like the 49ers have big plans” for him this season. Black, 24, is the latest in a long list of running backs drafted by the 49ers in the mid rounds. The 49ers’ results in this effort have not been great, but perhaps Black is the player who makes it all worth it. He scored 10 touchdowns in the Hoosiers’ championship run last year.

Same. After Kaelon Black was added in the third round, it seems like he’ll be the real competitor for Jordan James in the backup spot. Guerendo didn’t exactly play poorly when given a chance, but the 49ers simply have to draft a running back every year per unspoken NFL guidelines. If Guerendo is released, he could be an interesting reclamation project elsewhere.

Black (5’9”/208) spent his six-year college career with head coach Curt Cignetti, joining him at James Madison in 2020, and then transferring to Indiana in 2024 when the Hoosiers hired Cignetti to be their coach. During Indiana’s 2025 national championship run, Black split duties with Roman Hemby, but still managed to rush for 1,040 yards and 10 touchdowns on 186 carries. Black saw 158 of his carries come on first or second down, per TruMedia, and converted four of his 20 carries inside the opponents’ five-yard line into scores. He’s a physical back who doesn’t shy away from contact and pushes to pick up every yard before the play is dead. He caught a career-high 25 passes during his 2023 season at James Madison, but managed just nine receptions on 12 targets in his two seasons at Indiana. In San Francisco Black will struggle to carve out any sort of consistent role unless the Niners struggle with backfield injuries.

The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala reports that Commanders DT Johnny Newton is expected to miss significant time after undergoing surgery for a torn pectoral muscle.

Just a few hours ago, ESPN’s John Keim reported that Newton was visiting a specialist today. Apparently, the decision to undergo surgery was made fairly quickly. This is a tough loss for the Commanders’ defensive front. Newton ranked fourth on the team in quarterback pressures (27) and third in sacks (six) last year. Commanders edge rushers, OLB Odafe Oweh (calf) and OLB K’Lavon Chaisson (knee), are also nursing injuries at the moment.

Colts coach Shane Steichen confirmed TE Tyler Warren suffered a groin injury on Wednesday.

Steichen adds that the team will be cautious with Warren’s recovery, but chose not to share details regarding the injury’s severity beyond that. If healthy, the second-year tight end is a candidate to lead the team in targets this season after racking up 106 as a rookie. The Colts’ pass-catching corps is in a tough spot, with WR Alec Pierce (ankle) still sidelined. If Warren cannot play in Week 1, WR Josh Downs would presumably handle a sizable target share, operating as the team’s clear-cut No. 1 target earner. Stay tuned.

New Orleans Football’s Mike Triplett believes the Saints might not need to sign a short-term replacement for WR Jordyn Tyson (hamstring).

Triplett was apparently surprised to see reporters wondering whether the Saints should bring a veteran receiver aboard. According to him, the Saints had nine legitimate wide receiver candidates to make the final roster, with rookie WRs Bryce Lance and Barion Brown leading the charge. Per Triplett, Lance “is coming on faster than anyone else,” though Brown notably surged early in camp. Lance does not play on special teams, which could make him an ideal No. 3 wide receiver. Triplett also believes the Saints should design a package of plays for the speedy Brown, who WR Chris Olave said is “basically the same player” as former Saints WR Rashid Shaheed. For deep league fantasy managers, Lance could be worth a late-round dart throw. Both players should be rostered in dynasty.

The Athletic’s Nate Atkins believes it is still unclear whether the Rams will sign WR Puka Nacua to an extension.

Nacua is entering the final year of his contract. Atkins writes that it is only a matter of time before “Nacua lands a monstrous extension,” but whether it comes from the Rams or another team, presumably via free agency or a trade, remains a question. Both the team and player reportedly “hope” that Nacua remains a Ram long term, and the team is “encouraged by some of the steps he’s taken this offseason.” The superstar wide receiver still has a civil suit that must be dealt with and the league has not yet clarified whether it intends to suspend him. For now, Nacua is a member of the Rams’ explosive offense and can be treated as a locked-in WR1, albeit with some suspension risk.

Buccaneers signed DT Vita Vea to a one-year, $30 million extension through 2027.

Vea also gets a $6 million pay bump for the 2026 NFL season. He was previously set to make $18 million this year, bringing his new salary up to $24 million. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported last week that Vea was seeking an extension, placing him in the top defensive tackle tier, which currently sits around $38 million annually. It looks like the two sides compromised to get a deal done. Vea ranked in the top three on the team in quarterback pressures (51) and sacks (four) last year. Garafolo clarified in a follow-up segment that the $30 million extension includes this season’s pay increase. Vea will play for $24 million in 2027.

ESPN’s John Keim reports that Commanders DT Johnny Newton is visiting a specialist regarding his recent pectoral injury.

When asked for comment, Commanders coach Dan Quinn said, “anytime you’re seeing a specialist, of course, there is reason for concern.” Both starting edge rushers, OLB Odafe Oweh (calf) and OLB K’Lavon Chaisson (knee), and backup LB Jordan Magee (shoulder) are also sidelined by recent injuries. The Commanders’ defensive front is tasked with corralling the Eagles’ rushing attack in three and a half weeks.

Commanders RB Rachaad White (undisclosed) did not practice on Wednesday.

ESPN’s John Keim expects to hear an update on White tomorrow morning. Backup RB Jeremy McNichols is dealing with a quad injury and RB Jerome Ford (hamstring) was recently placed on injured reserve. As things currently stand, starting RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt, rookie RBs Kaytron Allen and Robert Henry, and veteran RB Craig Reynolds are the four healthy players. Croskey-Merritt’s reported passing game improvements have come at the right time. Allen played well on a sizable preseason Week 1 workload. He might be in line for RB2 duties if White were to miss time.

Lions TE Sam LaPorta (undisclosed) did not practice on Wednesday.

Just last week, we received word that LaPorta has been having a “terrific” training camp. He suffered a season-ending back injury last year, which ultimately required surgery. While the surprise absence is somewhat concerning, this could simply be LaPorta taking a veteran rest day in the middle of the week. This is worth tracking, but not worth worrying about at this time.

Lions WR Jameson Williams (shoulder) resumed practicing on Wednesday.

Williams missed the Lions’ last two practices with what coach Dan Campbell described as a minor shoulder injury. Today’s practice was padless. We should learn more about Williams’ status when the pads go back on. Regardless, Williams seemingly remains a safe WR2/3 candidate right now.
