Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Alec Pierce (ankle) is expected to return to practice this week.

Pierce, who’s been sidelined since undergoing ankle surgery in the spring following the signing of his contract extension with the Colts, will practice this week barring any setbacks, Steichen said. It’s good news for Pierce’s Week 1 availability after the team’s de facto WR1 missed training camp while recovering from the ankle issue. Pierce is expected to see more intermediate targets this season after operating strictly as a field stretcher over the past few seasons. Pierce in 2025 led the league in air yards per game; his 44 percent air yards share ranked fourth among receivers. Pierce profiles as a somewhat sneaky fantasy selection after his ADP has steadily sunk over the past month.
Brooks faces another injury setback
Devin McCourty and Mike Florio discuss the "unfortunate" injury history of Jonathan Brooks as the Panthers running back needs surgery once again.

Pierce will most certainly be out for numerous games after appearing to re-injure the heel that he had offseason surgery on in Week 2. Rapoport’s wording seems to indicate that additional surgery has not yet been ruled out, but Pierce will attempt to rehab the issue in the interim. It’s a disaster of a scenario for a team that extended Pierce while allowing Michael Pittman to walk in the offseason. Josh Downs appears most likely to become the focal point of the offense through the air in Pierce’s absence after amassing seven catches on nine targets in the team’s overtime loss to the Chiefs. When, or if, Pierce returns to the active roster in 2026 remains to be seen.

X-rays came back negative last night but Pierce couldn’t put weight on it last night and left on crutches with a boot on. The fact that it was an aggravation is not promising. It sounds like Pierce could be looking at an extended absence. If true, Josh Downs will get some WR3 hype ahead of Week 3’s date against the Texans. If you were wondering why Laquon Treadwell was on the field deep in the game on Sunday night, Pierce’s injury is the reason.

Pierce evidently avoided suffering a fracture. He will undergo more testing tomorrow to determine the remaining specifics and the injury’s severity. Hopefully, the Colts’ field-stretching wide receiver is not sidelined for long, if at all. Pierce underwent surgery on his ankle/heel this offseason and spent almost the entire spring and summer rehabbing.

Pierce came up limping on a route on the final play of the first quarter and was escorted to the medical tent by the training staff. He appeared to be unable to put any weight on the injured leg. It’s obviously not what fantasy managers want to see after he missed most of the offseason program following surgery on the ankle and heel on the same leg in late March. He remained in the medical tent for about 10 minutes before being carted to the locker room. Pierce caught his lone target for 11 yards prior to departing.

Pierce’s Thursday absence appears to have been a rest day. The Colts reportedly plan to play Pierce more in Week 2 than they did in Week 1, when he played on 59 percent of the team’s snaps. He posted a 4/61 receiving line and can be viewed as a WR3/FLEX this week.

It looks like it’s just a routine day off, but we’ll check back on Friday. The Indianapolis Star reported that Pierce told reporters before the practice that the plan is “to put him on the field more in Kansas City” in Week 2 after he played just 59 percent of the team’s snaps.

This could just be a rest day, though those typically happen on Wednesday. Pierce has been working his way back from his offseason heel/ankle surgery, and he reportedly had his wrist X-rayed after the Colts’ Week 1 game against the Ravens. Hopefully, the beat reporters turn up something useful.

The Athletic’s James Boyd noted that Pierce also had his wrist X-rayed after the game, though neither that nor the heel injury is a concern for him going forward. Ashton Dulin missed practice with a hamstring injury. Pierce was targeted six times in Week 1 despite having his snaps limited. He caught four passes for 61 yards. He will be a boom/bust WR3 for his Week 3 matchup with Kansas City.
  • IND Wide Receiver #14
Pierce hauled in a 13-yard pass on the Colts’ opening drive but didn’t log his second reception of the game until the third quarter. The speedster, who has made a name for himself as a deep threat, saw just one pass of 20-plus air yards in Sunday’s loss, with all of his receptions coming in the intermediate part of the field. With the game nearly out of reach in the fourth quarter, Pierce caught passes of 14 and 23 yards to get the Colts into scoring range before Tyler Warren capped the drive with a nine-yard receiving touchdown. Pierce’s six targets tied Keenan Allen for the team lead on Sunday, but we’ll need to see more volume before we can confidently project him as anything more than a WR3 for next week’s game against the Chiefs.

Amazon Prime’s James Palmer reports Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) will play in Week 3 against the Packers.

Tagovailoa, fighting injuries for much of the offseason, missed Atlanta’s first two games with an oblique issue. He’ll return just in time to serve as backup to Michael Penix, who’s returning from a 2025 ACL injury. Penix is set to start Thursday night against a Packers defense allowing the ninth lowest adjusted yards per pass attempt.

Panthers will host a workout for Austin Ekeler, formerly of the Commanders.

Carolina is in need of some backfield reinforcements after losing Jonathon Brooks to a core injury that will leave him sidelined for at least six weeks. AJ Dillon is set to fill in for Brooks while Chub Hubbard presumably continues as the team’s lead back. Ekeler, 31, who hasn’t played since injuring his Achilles last September, could be an emergency running back if Hubbard or Dillon go down with injuries in the coming weeks. First he’ll need to make the squad.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Jonathon Brooks is expected to have core muscle surgery and will be placed on IR.

Brooks will be sidelined for at least six weeks. It opens the door for Chuba Hubbard to dominate the Carolina backfield for the next month and a half, with AJ Dillon chipping in as a breather back. Through two game Hubbard leads the Panthers backfield with 22 rushes for 102 yards. He’s run a route on 50 percent of the team’s drop backs and have five targets. The Panthers, meanwhile, have the second highest pass rate over expected through Week 2. Hubbard will be a locked-in top-20 option going forward. Dillon can be stashed in case Hubbard gets dinged up while Brooks is recovering.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said S Brian Branch (Achilles) “has a chance” to resume practicing sooner than S Kerby Joseph (knee), “but it won’t be this week.”

Campbell spoke in a dejected tone when asked about the Lions’ safety duo returning to practice, particularly when discussing Joseph’s outlook. Campbell said Joseph did not suffer a setback, but stopped short of fully explaining the situation. It sounds like Joseph’s recovery stalled. The training staff was focused on strengthening Joseph’s knee, “but there was a little time there where we weren’t able to do everything we needed to do.” The Lions will not ask Joseph to play until he gets his knee as strong as it can possibly be, “and he feels comfortable.” Branch could return to practice in the coming weeks, but at this point, Joseph’s career status seems like it might be up in the air.

FOX Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano believes the Giants’ “best bet is to commit all their first-team reps” to backup QB Jameis Winston rather than trading for a potential fill-in starter.

Vacchiano explores myriad trade options that the Giants could explore in a lengthy article, but ultimately determines that rolling with Winston, while QB Jaxson Dart (knee) is sidelined, is the team’s best course of action. According to Vacchiano, the Giants viewed Winston “as a solid veteran who was smart and talented enough to get them through a short stretch if Dart went down” when they signed him to a two-year, $13 million contract extension two weeks ago. “Their faith gets shakier when it’s a long-term proposition they were hoping to avoid,” but alas, this appears to be the situation the team is currently facing. If Winston can return to something resembling his 2019 Buccaneers form, when he posted a 5,109/33/30 passing stat line en route to an overall QB3 finish, he could facilitate usable outings for Giants pass catchers. Betting on that exact outcome is unwise, but Winston could be a QB1 streamer in the right situation.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said to “expect” Brock Bowers (knee) to play in Week 3 against the Saints.

Rapoport wrote that “there is a good chance” Bowers returns this week as the caption for his NFL Network segment. He used stronger language in the actual segment, telling viewers to “expect” Bowers to be on the field when the Raiders travel to New Orleans for a date with the Saints this week. The Raiders’ top pass catcher should be treated as an elite TE1 upon his return.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said RB Emmett Johnson “will continue to get more snaps.”

Johnson has turned 14 touches into 103 scrimmage yards thus far. Evidently pleased with his fifth-round rookie, Reid wants to keep “allowing Emmett to grow,” in turn taking “a little bit of load off” starting RB Kenneth Walker. Reid notes that Walker wants the ball on every play and is not asking for a lighter workload, but Reid is seeking “a nice balance with those two in there,” which “keeps them even more fresh as the season goes on.” Walker, of course, remains an elite RB1. Johnson, however, should be rostered in all 12-team leagues as a high-upside bench stash that could return standalone value before long.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Seahawks QB Sam Darnold (glute) “has a chance” to play in Week 3 against the Commanders.

To be clear, Rapoport’s tone was controlled and cautionary here. Darnold can only be considered questionable, at best. The Seahawks’ quarterback “is healing faster than anyone had imagined,” but Rapoport adds that the team wants to be “cautious” with him. Backup QB Drew Lock should probably be viewed as the presumptive Week 3 starter at this time, but it sounds like Darnold can reasonably be expected to play in Week 4 at the latest.

49ers signed WR Brandin Cooks, formerly of the Bills.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cooks is signing with the 49ers’ practice squad initially “to get up to speed for games.” Cooks, 32, posted a 24/279/0 receiving line in the regular season last year, before chipping in five catches for 78 yards in two playoff games. He is perhaps unlikely to be fantasy-relevant right away, but there is a real chance he could work his way into the 49ers’ wide receiver rotation, given their influx of injuries at the position.
