Raiders release Albert Okwuegbunam

We don’t know how much future there is to reserve for the 33-year-old (happy birthday!), but the Raiders are here for it. The Raiders also signed RB Chris Collier, G McClendon Curtis, LB Jamin Davis, DT Treven Ma’ae, T Joshua Miles, TE Albert Okwuegbunam (remember him?), WR Brenden Rice, G Layden Robinson, WR Justin Shorter, OL Laki Tasi, and T Dalton Wagner to reserve/future deals.

Miller finished with a 38.8 PFF offense grade for his 80 preseason snaps at quarterback. It would be surprising if the Raiders turned to him at any point this season, but perhaps he can take a step forward and show more next preseason. Also joining the Las Vegas practice squad are: WR Alex Bachman, RB Chris Collier, S Terrell Edmunds, DE Jahfari Harvey, WR Shedrick Jackson, LB Matt Jones, DT Treven Ma’ae, G Atonio Mafi, TE Albert Okwuegbunam Jr., TE Carter Runyon, WR Justin Shorter, OL Laki Tasi, S Trey Taylor, CB Greedy Vance, T Dalton Wagner and S JT Woods.

Miller was the Raiders’ sixth-round pick, and it seems very likely that the signal-caller will be back with Las Vegas on their practice squad. Tommy Mellott — a former college quarterback who is making the move to wide receiver — was also part of the cuts for the Raiders. Okwuegbunam last earned a target playing for the Eagles in 2023. He is not fantasy-relevant in 2025. The Raiders also signed WR Kawaan Baker and correspondingly waived TE Pat Conroy and WR Kyle Philips.

Indy signed fellow CB Tre Herndon as well. David Long Jr. was placed on injured reserve and fantasy folk hero Albert Okwuegbunam was cut in a pair of corresponding moves. Shelley was drafted by the Bears in 2019 and got some run as a nickel corner. He later posted an impressive season with eight psas breakups and one intercpetion with Minnesota in 2022. Shelley has since struggled to earn playing time on other teams and will be fighting for a roster spot this summer.

Guess that’s another year he’s not helping any best ball teams. Okwuegbunam was placed on injured reserve near last cuts, but the Eagles likely decided they’d rather have that IR spot open for someone else. Okwuegbunam should catch on with a new team soon.

The former Denver Bronco fantasy darling seemed likely to push for back-up duties behind Dallas Goedert but he underwent surgery to repair a core muscle injury and will be out for 6-8 weeks. It’s possible Albert O will return to the field in the second half of the season. For now, that means Grant Calcaterra is the only tight end behind Goedert.

Uzomah managed 29 receptions over 21 games with the Jets over the past two years, following eight seasons with the Bengals. The Eagles had signed the journeyman on a one-year deal in April, and had apparently seen enough in training camp. Philadelphia’s tight end depth chart now includes Dallas Goedert, fantasy folk legend Albert Okwuegbunam, and Grant Calcaterra.

Okwuegbunam was acquired by the Eagles at final cuts last August and proceeded to catch zero balls across four appearances. The 25-year-old did manage to avoid major injury, which has been his career-long bugaboo. There did seem to be something of a phantom I.R. placement in December. Okwuegbunam presumably has an uphill climb to re-secure his 53-man roster spot for 2024, but surviving through the entirety of the 2023 campaign will give him at least a fighting chance. Although he’s still somehow only headed into his age-26 campaign, Albert O’s Dynasty league moment has come and gone.

Okwuegbunam was set to be waived by the Broncos before the Eagles came swooping in to trade for the veteran tight end. Albert O will now get a fresh start in Philly after falling behind on the Broncos’ depth chart earlier in camp. Through 26 games, Okwuegbunam has caught 54 passes for 546 yards and four touchdowns. He could eventually slot in as the TE2 behind Dallas Goedert on the Eagles’ depth chart.
