Cam Skattebo said he considered retiring after suffering his season-ending ankle injury.

Speaking on Up and Adams, Skattebo said he told himself in college that he would retire if he suffered a major injury. It’s a surprising comment on its face, but football fans shouldn’t be shocked that a young player questioned his choice of profession after suffering a gruesome ankle injury in his first season. Skattebo ultimately attacked rehab and returned faster than most people expected. He was a full-go early in the offseason and is now ready for Week 1.

Kyle Dvorchak and Patrick Daugherty discuss Tetairoa McMillan’s breakout, his emergence as Carolina’s No. 1 receiver and whether he can finish as a top-12 fantasy wideout.

With the G-Men and Cardinals trading sacks and turnovers in a sloppy but close contest, Skattebo seemed to be in a 50-50 committee with Najee Harris. That is until Harris got “Peanut punched” at the 11:14 mark of the fourth quarter, losing a fumble. Harris was never heard from again as Skattebo received seven touches from that point forward. The G-Men are understandably hunting for some sort of alternative or caddie for their unexplosive, default lead back in Skattebo, but unsurprisingly, Harris is not going to be the answer in that regard. Skattebo will keep hanging around the low-end RB2 ranks heading into Week 5 against the Commanders.

With the Titans struggling to amass more than a handful of first downs, John Harbaugh was more than happy to grind out three yards per carry with his lead back for the better part of four quarters. Skattebo’s only explosive play came on a downfield shot from Jameis Winston. Skattebo got open deep while Winston fled the pocket and the two connected for a 30-yard gain. That alone was enough to make Skattebo the team’s leading receiver. Skattebo’s strong workload will keep him in the RB2 ranks for Week 4 against the Cardinals, even though the offensive environment has taken a massive hit with Jaxson Dart out for the regular season.
  • NYG Running Back #44
The Giants’ game plan was thrown for a loop when quarterback Jaxson Dart was forced from the game on the team’s first possession and were largely unable to get anything going with Jameis Winston under center. The result was a haphazard scheme thrown together to minimize Winston’s exposure to a relentless Rams defensive front, which drowned the fantasy production of all parties, to include Skattebo. More startling to Skattebo’s fantasy managers was the involvement of Najee Harris in the red zone, who was unable to cash in on two carries from the six on consecutive plays in the second quarter. Skattebo gets a plus matchup against the Titans in Week 3, where he returns to a viable RB2 in fantasy circles.

Although Skattebo was not targeted in the pass game, his 18 carries handily led the team. Furthermore, presumed backup Tyrone Tracy lost a fumble on one of his two carries, resulting in Devin Singletary taking over primary backup duties for the remainder of the game. Those two variables should keep Skattebo’s weekly volume high after showing no ill effects of the devastating ankle injury suffered in 2025. His touchdown now gives him eight total scores in nine professional appearances despite only six of those being starts, a rate that will keep Skattebo in the weekly borderline RB1 discussion moving forward. Tracy managed just two snaps to Singletary’s 25, leaving Singletary as the primary backup for the moment. It’s possible Najee Harris gets into this discussion after being a healthy scratch in Week 1.

It’s worth noting that Cam Skattebo continues to be the first running back up in practice, but it sounds like the Giants could have a vision for Harris, who signed with the team on a one-year, minimum-salary deal, per Raanan. Harris is returning from a torn Achilles that ended his 2025 season in Week 3, but there’s plenty of room for him to earn snaps behind Skattebo once he gets up to speed. A blown pass-blocking assignment by Tyrone Tracy in the team’s first preseason game against the Vikings raised immediate questions about whether or not the Giants will trust Tracy in pass-blocking situations this season, and Harris has proven to be a capable pass-blocker in the past. At this point, it’s hard to imagine Harris having any standalone fantasy value in a healthy Giants backfield, but he could be worth a handcuff to Skattebo in deeper leagues based on these latest reports.

Coming off a serious leg injury that ended his 2025 season in November, Skattebo has fared well in offseason practices and training camp, claiming he’s fully healed from his leg break. For now he’s listed as a co-RB1 alongside Tracy, who was up and down as the Giants’ lead back last season after Skattebo went down to injury. Devin Singletary listed as the lone RB2 likely means Tracy would get first crack at lead back duties if Skattebo misses any time in 2026. Tracy will be worth rostering in most 12-team formats.

It’s a sneaky way that Tracy could cut into Cam Skattebo’s workload. Duggan went as far as to say it “figures to be a time share, with Skattebo the 1-A and Tracy the 1-B,” and while we wouldn’t go quite that far with Skattebo being the lead back in most other drills and being anointed the starter for most of camp, it does cut Skattebo’s value just a smidge.

Skattebo left practice early on Friday after taking a hard hit from LB Arvell Reese. Skattebo spent the rest of today’s practice on the Giants’ sideline, stretching his left leg. Per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, it was it was his hamstring. That makes sense. Some of you might remember that Skattebo suffered a season-ending right ankle dislocation and fibula fracture last year. Harbaugh said that Skattebo is still “working back into football shape.” Putting two and two together, it sounds like Skattebo may have suffered a hamstring strain today. The injury might cost him a few practices, and it is worth noting that Harbaugh tends to present optimistic recovery timelines, but Skattebo should have ample time to rehab and ramp up before the regular season. Hopefully, he can take preseason reps if that was meant to be part of his ankle-related rehab plan.

Per Raanan, Skattebo “went down after a collision with LB Arvell Reese.” Skattebo stopped practicing after that but did not depart for the locker room. Instead, he remained on the sideline, stretching his left leg. The good news here is that he did not re-injure his right leg. He suffered a season-ending right ankle dislocation and fibula fracture last year. That leg appears to be a-okay. The fact that Skattebo was not taken to the locker room could be a positive indicator on this one. Perhaps a contusion, rather than a strain? We’ll provide an update as soon as we have one.

According to Hughes, Skattebo is “the first up in almost every running drill,” and he has also handled the majority of carries in practice. While it’s certainly an encouraging sign for Skattebo’s usage, Hughes also notes that the preferred options in the passing game are Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary. If the Giants were to dial back Skattebo’s role in the receiving game, it could deal a bit of a blow to his fantasy stock. He was on a 17-game pace to catch 51 passes last season, and his work in the passing game made up 43.7 percent of his fantasy scoring in PPR leagues last year. Skattebo’s role as an early-down grinder and goal-line back should be more than enough to satisfy fantasy managers this season, but a reduced role in the passing game would put a bit of a cap on his ceiling.

Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said Jeremiyah Love tweaked his other ankle in Week 4’s loss to the Giants.

It’s been an odd 24 hours for Love, who was quoted after Sunday’s game saying this is shaping up to be the “longest year” of his career while also adding that he’s “tired” and would be willing to pass off work to Tyler Allgeier or Bam Knight in the event that he doesn’t think he can do what is being asked of him. As for this latest injury, LaFleur said the ankle injury isn’t the same one Love injured in the preseason, meaning he now has two ankle injuries to manage for the rest of the season. The Cardinals’ backfield was already proving hard to predict, and the latest quote from Love, coupled with the injury news, doesn’t exactly instill more confidence in him going forward. He draws a plus Week 5 matchup against the Lions, but should be treated as a fringe RB2/RB3 for now.

Baker Mayfield (thumb) was listed as DNP on Monday’s estimated practice report.

Mayfield is expected to miss “anywhere from three to six weeks” with his thumb injury, so it’s not at all surprising to see him listed as a DNP for Monday’s practice. We wouldn’t expect Mayfield to practice at all this week in the days leading up to Thursday’s matchup against the Cowboys. We’ll see if things change next week when the Bucs begin prepping for Week 6 against the Steelers. Rookie UDFA Jalon Daniels is expected to make his second career start on Thursday.

Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said LT Paris Johnson will miss the remainder of the season with torn biceps.

This is the third straight season-ending injury for Johnson, who also ended the 2024 and 2025 seasons on injured reserve due to knee injuries. The Cardinals picked up Johnson’s fifth-year option earlier this offseason, so he will return for the 2026 season. That said, this recent string of injuries doesn’t bode well for him earning a long-term contract extension this offseason, despite his strong play when healthy. Johnson allowed seven pressures and one sack on 174 pass-blocking snaps, per PFF, and has allowed 10 sacks in his last 30 games played. Assuming all goes well with his rehab, Johnson should be ready in time for training camp next season.

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said Rico Dowdle is making progress in his attempt to return from a toe injury.

McCarthy said he expects Dowdle and Jaylen Warren to be a “one-two punch” once Dowdle returns to the field. Warren has totaled 34 rushes over the last two weeks while rushing for 220 scoreless yards, but had a 21-89-0 line during the first two weeks of the season when Dowdle was active. Both backs will likely fall in the RB3/FLEX range if Dowdle suits up for Week 5’s game against the Colts.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Tank Bigsby will have core muscle surgery and be placed on injured reserve.

Rapoport reports there are hopes that Bigsby will be back “in six weeks or shorter.” The 24-year-old back will be required to miss at least four games now that he’s headed for an IR stint. With Saquon Barkley (hamstring) also at risk of missing at least one game, third-string RB Will Shipley could be in line for a busy day in Week 5 against the Jaguars. Shipley rushed six times for 23 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Rams, but could be a sneaky option in PPR leagues given his pass-catching profile during his days at Clemson, when he caught 85 passes over three seasons. It also wouldn’t be surprising if Dameon Pierce or Jaydon Blue were promoted off the practice squad and saw early down touches while Shipley serves in more of a third-down role. There’s a lot to figure out here over the next few days.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said he expects Aaron Donald (back) to practice this week.

McVay said he expects Donald to practice this week and hopefully play when the Rams take on the Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 5. Donald has totaled four tackles in his first two games with the Rams this season and has yet to record a sack in 68 defensive snaps. The Rams will release their first injury report on Thursday, so we’ll get a better sense of Donald’s status then.

Bears coach Ben Johnson said Kyle Monangai (thumb) is “going to be OK” and that it was a “day to day deal.”

Monangai seemingly winds up on the injury report every other week, but he keeps playing and keeps playing well. We wouldn’t be surprised to see him listed again this week, but it sounds like he’s very much in line to play against the Packers.

Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley said the team is taking it “one day at a time” with Caleb Douglas’ ankle injury.

It’s hard to know what to make of this, but Douglas has missed back-to-back games with his injury and could be at risk of missing a third straight game if he can’t get on the practice field ahead of Week 5’s game against the Bengals. Douglas did not practice at all last week, so even getting on the field in a limited capacity would be an improvement. His name will be one to keep an eye on when the Dolphins release their first injury report on Wednesday.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Tyquan Thornton (ankle) will miss 12-16 weeks.

Thornton is having surgery “within the week” with the hopes of being able to return late in the season or in the playoffs for the Chiefs. Xavier Worthy will likely shift up in the target pecking order absent an outside addition. Cyrus Allen could also get more run than he has over the first month of the season.
