Kubiak: George Kittle ‘looks good’ for Week 1

49ers OC Klay Kubiak said TE George Kittle “looks good” for Week 1.

Asked whether Kittle would play in Week 1, 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said, “We have two more practices, but Kittle looks good.” That was not as explicit as defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’ quote on Nick Bosa’s expected status just minutes earlier, but it certainly seems to confirm mounting reports that Kittle is on track to suit up for Week 1. Kubiak added at the end of his response that Kittle’s “workload will be determined,” also reinforcing earlier reports that the team was likely to monitor his snap rate closely. Fantasy managers are likely better off taking a wait-and-see approach with Kittle until he has proven to be capable of a normal workload.

Unfortunately, Kittle also lost a fumble on the team’s final drive of the game as he was trying to earn extra yardage and set the team up for a better shot at the end zone. Even with that mistake, Kittle was tremendous on the day and the clear top option in the passing attack. The 49ers will be on a bye in Week 8, and then some of their injured receiving corps should return in Week 9, which might impact Kittle’s usage a bit. He will remain a rock-solid TE1 in fantasy leagues though.

Kittle got the scoring started with an 11-yard touchdown on a dime from Brock Purdy to the corner of the end zone, contributing to the offense steadily through a dominant first half before pushing his yardage totals with a 35-yard reception to start the third quarter. It was a tale of two halves for the San Francisco offense, which managed a staggering 303 yards of total offense in the first half and only 72 yards of total offense after the break, likely heavily influenced by the departure of Mike Evans at the end of the second quarter. Evans is expected to miss the team’s Week 7 contest against the Falcons, where Kittle could step into additional volume in his already-solid TE1 profile.

After three straight big weeks, Kittle finally came back down to earth in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks. His longest reception came on a 13-yard gain in the third quarter, but proved inconsequential after Deebo Samuel lost a fumble on the following play to end the drive. Kittle has been targeted 19 times over the last three weeks and has gone for 70-plus yards in three of his last four games. He should be primed for a bounce-back next week when the Niners play host to the Commanders on Monday night.
  • SF Tight End #85
It was reported earlier on Sunday that Kittle was dealing with an illness, but that he was still expecting to play. Kittle was not listed with the 49ers’ inactives when the team announced them 90 minutes before kickoff, meaning he is good to go and can be treated as a TE1 as usual.
  • SF Tight End #85
It was a quiet day for Kittle before a fourth quarter screen pass went for a 58-yard score that sealed the game for the Niners. Displaying explosiveness less than a year after tearing his Achilles tendon, Kittle outran the Broncos secondary for his second touchdown in as many weeks. His six looks from Brock Purdy was second most among Niners pass catcher, trailing only Mike Evans (eight targets). Kittle’s big play upside and his role in the red zone make him a potential matchup flipper in fantasy. He gets the Seahawks in Week 5.
  • SF Tight End #85
Kittle saw a season-high seven targets in the 49ers’ win, becoming the team’s No. 1 pass-catcher after Mike Evans (rib) left the game. He caught a 10-yard touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter and later sealed the win with a 20-yard score with under two minutes left. Kittle seems to be all the way back from his Achilles tear, leading all 49ers offensive skill players in snaps, only trailing Brock Purdy and the offensive line. With Evans’ status in the air, Kittle is the team’s top receiver and is squarely in the fantasy TE1 conversation for Week 4 against the Broncos.
  • SF Wide Receiver #11
This was the expected outcome for Week 3. Reports on Robinson’s injury indicate this could be a multi-week issue. With WR1 Mike Evans (hip) questionable, WR Deebo Samuel and TE George Kittle could take on sizable workloads, though the team will likely still try to limit Kittle’s snap count.
  • SF Tight End #85
Kittle looked good in this one, finding space over the middle of the field and showing good burst after the catch. That’s important considering he’s still working his way back from last year’s Achilles injury. The veteran played just three fewer snaps than Mike Evans and was fourth on the team in routes run, just one behind Christian McCaffrey. His playing time will continue to increase as the year goes on, but he looks pretty close to the George Kittle we’ve gotten used to.
  • SF Tight End #85
Kittle will likely remain on a snap count in Week 2, though his usage should continue steadily ticking upward. He can be started as a TE1 against the Dolphins’ fantasy-friendly defense this week.
  • SF Tight End #85
Kittle’s continued limited participation is not concerning. The 49ers are likely just managing the veteran’s reps early in the year, coming off a season-ending injury. Kittle is a TE1 for the 49ers’ Week 2 game against the Dolphins.

Lamar Jackson (ankle) is practicing Wednesday.

Though it’s unclear what, exactly, is going on with Jackson’s lingering ankle injury, a Wednesday practice puts him in a good spot to suit up in Week 8 against the Bills. His return will be a boon for Zay Flowers and the rest of the Baltimore offense. If Jackson can’t play, Tyler Huntley will get another start and should be used in superflex formats.

Rashee Rice (hamstring) will practice Wednesday.

Rice, who hasn’t played since Week 4 against the Raiders, would be a big addition to the struggling Kansas City offense if he’s able to practice this week and suit up in Week 8 against the Broncos. Rice had been dominating targets in the Chiefs’ check-down offense, and would likely continue in that role if he can return this weekend. No other pass catcher in the Chiefs offense is a must-play for fantasy purposes for now.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said Stefon Diggs will practice Thursday.

Diggs won’t practice Wednesday with an undisclosed injury. He should be fine for Washington’s Week 8 matchup against the Eagles, however. Diggs could see a slightly bigger role in the Commanders offense with Terry McLaurin (knee) done for the year. Diggs drafters should keep an eye on the veteran’s practice status in the coming days. Diggs has been targeted on a team-high 28 percent of his pass routes in 2026.

Josh Downs has requested a trade.

Downs was cagey when asked on Wednesday morning whether he had officially asked for his ticket out of Indianapolis, but Fowler maintains the wideout has requested the Colts trade him before the NFL’s trade deadline. That could very well happen in the coming days with the miserable Colts in fire sale mode, having dealt Quenton Nelson to Seattle and DeForest Buckner to the Niners. Downs, who has 26 receptions for 307 scoreless yards this season, would make sense as a trade target for the wideout-needy Chiefs, the Steelers, and perhaps the Seahawks.

Carnell Tate (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday.

Apparently Tate picked up the shoulder injury in Week 7’s loss to the Browns, when he caught five passes for 69 scoreless yards. If Tate is unable to practice headed into the weekend, Elic Ayomanor, who last week ran a route on 79 percent of the team’s drop backs and had 44 yards on three catches, would likely be the de factor WR1 for Tennessee. Tate has dominated air yards and targets this season and profiles as a positive regression candidate in the coming weeks.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Jonathan Taylor has not requested a trade.

The Colts this week dealt DeForest Buckner to the 49ers and Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks in what looks like a fire sale ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline. Taylor could be next if the Colts are ready to go all in on a rebuild in 2027 and beyond. A contender would likely have to part with a second round draft pick if they want Taylor in the coming weeks. Teams that could be suitors for Taylor include the Bengals, Vikings, and Seahawks, all of whom have backfield issues.

ESPN’s Jamison Hensley believes only Lamar Jackson (ankle) knows when he’ll be able to play again.

Jackson surprisingly missed the Ravens’ Week 7 loss to the Bengals with his lingering ankle injury, which has been described as neither high nor low. “If Jackson’s injury history has taught the football world anything, his timeline to return can be complicated and an extended absence can derail the Ravens’ season,” Hensley said. “But ultimately, the only one who truly knows when Jackson will return is Jackson himself.” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on Tuesday that he expected Jackson to suit up in Week 8 against the Bills. We likely won’t be sure of that until pre-game warmups. Tyler Huntley would continue as Baltimore’s starter if Jackson remains sidelined.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Jaylen Waddle suffered a chest injury and his Week 8 status has not been determined.

Waddle left Sunday’s game against the Cardinals with the chest injury. It was, according to Rapoport, an “aggravation of his previous chest injury.” Waddle could try to practice later this week, but would appear to be iffy unless he can log a practice session by Friday. If Waddle is sidelined this week against the Chiefs, Courtland Sutton would likely see more targets and become an interesting flex option against a tough KC secondary. Sutton over the past four weeks leads Denver in air yards and has the second most targets behind Waddle.

Chiefs signed Justin Tucker, formerly of the Ravens.

Tucker will start on the Chiefs practice squad. His signing comes a few days after Harrison Butker missed two field goal attempts against the Seahawks. On the season Butker has missed five of his 16 attempts, and over his past 11 games he’s missed seven kicks. Tucker, who recently competed for the Dolphins kicker job, hasn’t kicked since 2024 in Baltimore, when he missed eight of his 30 field goal tries. The Ravens released Tucker in 2025 after 16 massage therapists accused him of sexual misconduct.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said “there’s a chance” Micah Parsons (knee) practices next week.

When asked about Parsons’ chances of practicing next week, LaFleur said, “I sure hope so.” He followed that up with, “I’m saying there’s a chance.” Parsons opened the season on the PUP list after an ACL tear late last season. The Packers have a Thursday game for Week 8, leading to a mini-bye where Parsons’ door to practice is at least cracked open.
