Kittle has TD, leads 49ers in receiving

George Kittle caught all four of his targets for 80 yards and a touchdown in a Week 2 win over the Dolphins.

Kittle looked good in this one, finding space over the middle of the field and showing good burst after the catch. That’s important considering he’s still working his way back from last year’s Achilles injury. The veteran played just three fewer snaps than Mike Evans and was fourth on the team in routes run, just one behind Christian McCaffrey. His playing time will continue to increase as the year goes on, but he looks pretty close to the George Kittle we’ve gotten used to.
Darnold making speedy recovery from glute injury
Mike Florio and Chris Simms discuss Sam Darnold's recovery from a glute injury as the quarterback seems to be trending upwards and is expected to practice soon.

Kittle will likely remain on a snap count in Week 2, though his usage should continue steadily ticking upward. He can be started as a TE1 against the Dolphins’ fantasy-friendly defense this week.
  • SF Tight End #85
Kittle’s continued limited participation is not concerning. The 49ers are likely just managing the veteran’s reps early in the year, coming off a season-ending injury. Kittle is a TE1 for the 49ers’ Week 2 game against the Dolphins.
  • SF Tight End #85
Kittle also started out last week as limited, so this seems to be regular practice management for the veteran. He appeared in Week 1 and was targeted five times. Expect Kittle to be back out there for Week 2 against the Dolphins, barring any setbacks.

Tonges injured his MCL in Week 1. His return timeline has not yet been reported. With Tonges sidelined, TE George Kittle’s ramp-up period could be expedited. Backup TE Luke Farrell should also see more playing time, though he is not fantasy-relevant. The 49ers correspondingly promoted WR KhaDarel Hodge to the active roster and signed TE
    Jack Stoll.

Brock Purdy tried to get Kittle involved early in the contest, but it was the one legitimate option that Purdy wasn’t able to find success with. It’s amazing that the 32-year-old was even able to play in this game considering he tore his Achilles in January, but it is also fair to say it was a fantasy dud. Expect better things going forward for Kittle, and the next chance comes in Week 2 against a not-so-great Dolphins defense.

Kittle has made a remarkably quick recovery from the Achilles tear he suffered in the Wild Card Round. He is good to go just eight months later, and all reports out of training camp said he still looks as explosive as ever. We will need to see what he looks like in live action to confirm that, but it’s an impressive recovery nonetheless. Kittle could be on a snap count this week as the 49ers ramp him up to full speed, dropping him lower in the fantasy rankings than normal. He is a low-end TE1 for the 49ers’ Australia showdown with the Rams.

Kittle gets in another limited practice ahead of the 49ers’ Week 1 Australia game against the Rams. We expect him to continue to get limited practices in beyond this week as the 32-year-old nurses his Achilles. Also limited was FB Kyle Juszczyk (finger). Both are still in line to play this week.
  • SF Tight End #85
Kittle continues to work his way back from an Achilles tear in January and is seemingly on track to play Week 1. He practiced on Monday and gets in a limited practice again on Tuesday. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak was confident in Kittle’s availability this week, saying the 32-year-old looked good while the team practices in Australia. The entire 49ers offense practiced in some capacity Tuesday. Kittle’s chances of playing are trending upward; he’s a low-end TE1 if he plays against the Rams this week.
  • SF Tight End #85
Asked whether Kittle would play in Week 1, 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said, “We have two more practices, but Kittle looks good.” That was not as explicit as defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’ quote on Nick Bosa’s expected status just minutes earlier, but it certainly seems to confirm mounting reports that Kittle is on track to suit up for Week 1. Kubiak added at the end of his response that Kittle’s “workload will be determined,” also reinforcing earlier reports that the team was likely to monitor his snap rate closely. Fantasy managers are likely better off taking a wait-and-see approach with Kittle until he has proven to be capable of a normal workload.

Kittle was on the field on Monday when the Niners took the field to begin prepping for their Week 1 opener against the Rams in Australia. The veteran tight end has long been expected to have a shot to play in Thursday’s game, so the fact that he was on the field doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Kittle was able to log a few practices last week, but could be on a bit of a pitch count in his first game since suffering a torn Achilles in mid-January. Assuming he is limited in some capacity, Kittle should be viewed as a boom/bust TE1 for fantasy purposes.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said he’s “not sure” if Puka Nacua (groin) will play in Week 3.

McVay said he’s “hopeful” Nacua, who missed Monday night’s game against the Giants, will be able to suit up against Denver next week. The Rams offense was fine without Nacua on Monday against an injury-ravaged Giants team. LA had the week’s fourth highest EPA per play on the way to a 28-6 win. Another game with Nacua sidelined will mean more target domination for Davante Adams and more involvement for Terrance Ferguson, who caught 6-of-9 targets for 54 yards and a touchdown against New York.

The Athletic’s Matt Barrows believes Jacob Cowing could be the primary replacement for Demarcus Robinson (ankle).

Robinson suffered a severe ankle sprain in Sunday’s win against the Dolphins and could miss significant time. Cowing ran seven pass routes after Robinson’s exit from the game — the most among all Niners receivers besides Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans. Cowing was not targeted against Miami. If he gets a bump on snaps and routes this week against the Cardinals, Cowing would be nothing more than a deep league flex play who would likely be a boom-bust option.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh said Brian Burns sustained a low ankle sprain in Week 2 against the Rams.

Burns was among the key Giants who went down with injury in a blowout loss to the Rams. Burns suffered the sprain in the fourth quarter and needed help getting to the sideline. Harbaugh said the team diagnosed Burns with a low ankle sprain. That could mean he won’t miss much time. New York’s defense, which has struggled through two games — giving up the NFL’s fourth highest offensive success rate — could be even more vulnerable without Burns in the lineup.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Jaxson Dart is believed to have an MCL sprain.

Dart is set to undergo more testing on Tuesday after injuring his knee early in Monday night’s loss to the Rams. Garafolo said players usually take 4-6 weeks to recover from an MCL sprain, though the extent of Dart’s injury remains to be seen. Dart, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, tried to talk Giants coaches into letting him re-enter Monday night’s game in the second half. Jameis Winston, who was miserably inaccurate and mistake-prone against the Rams, would figure to get at least a couple starts while Dart recovers. Winston should be picked up in superflex leagues ahead of the team’s Week 3 game against the Titans.

Malachi Fields caught 2-of-6 targets for 30 yards in the Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Rams.

Fields struggled alongside the rest of the Giants in a game played mostly with backup quarterback Jameis Winston under center. Jaxson Dart departed after the team’s first possession with what looked like an MCL sprain based on the mechanism of the injury, something that could force missed contests from the normal starter. That would position Fields in a difficult spot to return usable counting stats in the short term. He gets the struggling Titans in Week 3, where he’ll be best left on fantasy benches.

Darnell Mooney caught 2-of-3 targets for 48 yards in the Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Rams.

Mooney played well behind Malik Nabers and rookie Malachi Fields but was able to cash in on a 33-yard reception to pad his counting stats in the loss. Fantasy managers of Nabers will want to track his status closely in the coming week after the talented youngster briefly departed with a shoulder injury. An absence could thrust Mooney into a near every-down role against the Titans in Week 3.

Malik Nabers caught 1-of-4 targets for one yard in the Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Rams.

Nabers departed the game at the end of the first quarter with a shoulder injury but was able to return after missing only one drive. His putrid box score can largely be attributed to uneven quarterback play from backup Jameis Winston, whom came on in relief of the injured Jaxson Dart after the team’s first possession. Beyond the fact that fantasy managers were left with a near goose egg from their third round selection, Nabers could be forced to contend with backup-level quarterback play in the coming weeks considering the mechanism of Dart’s knee injury. Even so, it will be difficult to sit Nabers in a cake matchup with the Titans in Week 3, making him a classic hold-your-breath start.

Isaiah Likely caught 5-of-10 targets for 33 yards in the Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Rams.

Although fantasy managers are thrilled with the team-leading 10 targets, the nature of those targets is cause for concern considering the uneven play from backup quarterback Jameis Winston. Starter Jaxson Dart was forced from the game with a knee injury on the team’s first possession and it would not be shocking to see him miss games considering the mechanism of his injury, leaving the offense in the hands of the inconsistent Winston. Even so, fantasy managers will be thrilled to start Likely in a plus matchup against the Titans in Week 3, particularly considering the multitude of injuries at the position throughout the league.

Cam Skattebo rushed 12 times for 36 yards in the Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Rams, adding 19 yards on four receptions.

The Giants’ game plan was thrown for a loop when quarterback Jaxson Dart was forced from the game on the team’s first possession and were largely unable to get anything going with Jameis Winston under center. The result was a haphazard scheme thrown together to minimize Winston’s exposure to a relentless Rams defensive front, which drowned the fantasy production of all parties, to include Skattebo. More startling to Skattebo’s fantasy managers was the involvement of Najee Harris in the red zone, who was unable to cash in on two carries from the six on consecutive plays in the second quarter. Skattebo gets a plus matchup against the Titans in Week 3, where he returns to a viable RB2 in fantasy circles.
