NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Michael Penix “did not believe that he was ready” to play in Week 1 against the Steelers.

Penix was cleared to participate in 11-on-11s back on August 22 and hasn’t logged much practice in camp. As a result, Tua Tagovailoa has been named the starter for the Falcons to kick off Week 1 against the Steelers, buying Penix some additional time to get practice reps and get his knee right before being put in game situations. Rapoport said the Falcons hope to give Penix “a couple more weeks” before playing him, so it wouldn’t be surprising if we saw Tua under center for the first few games of the season before the Falcons consider a switch at the position. Tagovailoa struggled in camp and throughout the preseason and is expected to be on a short leash once Penix is ready to go.

Penix was a mess in the first half, missing Drake London on what should have been an walk-in 30-yard touchdown. The Falcons abandoned the run game in the second half, facing a three touchdown deficit, and Penix threw three touchdowns in hurry-up mode. Taking five sacks on the day, Penix targeted London and Jahan Dotson heavily, connecting with Dotson on a nicely thrown 41-yard gain in the second half. This was the first multiple-TD game of Penix’s season. He’ll be a low-ceiling superflex play in Week 7 against the 49ers.

Penix was able to practice this week and will start for Atlanta in a potentially high scoring game against the Bears. Penix should be considered a streaming option in most formats. Falcons declared QB Cooper Rush, QB Jack Strand, CB C.J. Henderson, DB Malcolm DeWalt IV, LB Christian Harris, OL Ethan Onianwa, and DE Drake Jackson inactive against the Bears.

It was reported the day after the Falcons’ overtime loss to the Ravens that there was “optimism” that Penix would start in Week 6. After being upgraded to a full participant on Thursday’s practice, he seemed like a lock to be ready to go by Sunday, so Friday’s news isn’t all that unexpected. Penix has thrown for 719 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception this season, throwing one touchdown in each of his first three games. He’ll be on the fantasy radar in 2QB/Superflex leagues against a Bears defense that has allowed just two top-12 fantasy finishes to opposing QBs this season.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
This is great news for the Falcons’ offense, which can barely function with Tua Tagovailoa at the helm. Penix is firmly on track to play in Week 6 against the Bears, as long as he gets through the week setback-free. Penix can be viewed as a high-end QB2 with four teams on bye.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
“We’ll see how he’s feeling,” head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Wednesday morning, adding that Penix should be able to play through the injury. Even if it’s a limited practice session for Penix, it’s good news for his Week 6 availability following his Sunday night rib injury against the Ravens. Penix, operating under center at a much higher rate than last season, is among the most efficient quarterbacks in the league through Week 5. If Penix is out, Tua Tagovailoa would represent a major downgrade for all Atlanta pass catchers.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix said after Sunday’s loss that he didn’t believe his injury would be long-term. He was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa in overtime because of his injury, but he also added that he likely would have gone back on the field had the Falcons received the ball to start the extra quarter. Instead, Penix said his pain worsened the longer he sat, which was why he ultimately didn’t go back in. Penix’s status will be one to monitor throughout the week. If he can’t start in Week 6, Tagovailoa would be in line to start his first game of the season.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix will undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the severity of his injury, but it doesn’t sound like he’s at risk of missing much time. Penix exited in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Ravens and was forced to stay on the sideline in overtime to watch Tua Tagovailoa throw the game-losing interception shortly after the Ravens scored the go-ahead touchdown. Penix threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and has been solid in his three games since returning from injury. If he’s not able to start in Week 6, Tagovailoa would presumably draw the start at home against the Bears.

Penix took the full brunt of a brutal hit to the midsection late in the fourth quarter of Week 5 against the Ravens. He would leave for one play due to the medical timeout, return for one play, and then retreat to the sideline. Tua Tagovailoa came on in relief in overtime, with the team designating Penix questionable to return with an injury to his ribs. Penix completed 19-of-32 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown prior to departing, adding eight yards on two carries. Fantasy managers will want to monitor his practice status in the coming days ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Bears.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix wasn’t asked to do much with his arm as the Falcons tied a franchise record with five rushing scores, but the threat of consistent and reliable passing has done wonders for a Falcons offense that looked lost through two games behind poor quarterback play. It also doesn’t hurt when your All Pro running back goes for a 59-yard touchdown on his first touch of the game. The Falcons were never threatened by an underperforming Saints team after jumping out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter. Penix has yet to be called on for increased passing volume through two starts, something that could change, pending the health of Lamar Jackson, in Week 5 when they host the Ravens. Penix remains a middling QB2 and does not warrant starting in all formats outside of two-quarterback leagues.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
The final stat line looks more impressive when you consider Penix started the game 1-of-5 passing with an interception, settling into the game from there to go on to complete 17 of his final 20 pass attempts. As was the case during his rookie season, Penix leaned on his top option through the air, feeding Drake London 10 targets that the talented receiver parlayed into a gaudy 194 yards, with no other pass-catcher surpassing the 19 yards receiving of running back Bijan Robinson. The Falcons improve to 1-2 on the young season while handing the Packers their first home opener loss in 14 years. Penix has all the look of an upside QB2 and deserves streaming consideration ahead of a road matchup with the Saints in Week 4.

Jordan Watkins caught his only target for 22 yards in the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Commanders.

Watkins drew the start in place of the injured Deebo Samuel but was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, with 23 of Brock Purdy’s 29 targets going to the team’s top three options in Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans, and George Kittle. Evans departed at the end of the second quarter with an aggravation of his Achilles injury, something that appears likely to cost the veteran a Week 7 game against the Falcons. That could leave Watkins in line for a second consecutive start, although the upside remains modest. Fantasy managers are likely best leaving both Watkins and veteran Brandin Cooks on the waiver wire, the latter of whom caught 1-of-2 targets for 13 yards against the Commanders.

George Kittle caught 5-of-8 targets for 69 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Commanders.

Kittle got the scoring started with an 11-yard touchdown on a dime from Brock Purdy to the corner of the end zone, contributing to the offense steadily through a dominant first half before pushing his yardage totals with a 35-yard reception to start the third quarter. It was a tale of two halves for the San Francisco offense, who managed a staggering 303 yards of total offense in the first half and only 73 yards of total offense after the break, likely heavily influenced by the departure of Mike Evans at the end of the second quarter. Evens is expected to miss the team’s Week 8 contest against the Falcons, where Kittle could step into addition volume in his already-solid TE1 profile.

Christian McCaffrey rushed 16 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Commanders, adding 53 yards on nine receptions.

McCaffrey set a season high with 25 touches and 26 opportunities in a game played without Deebo Samuel and in which Mike Evans departed just before the half with an aggravation of his Achilles injury. The veteran workhorse back again proved how high his ceiling can be with such a robust role through the air. A second quarter fumble was his first lost fumble since 2024, a stretch spanning over 500 touches since he last lost a fumble. McCaffrey remains an elite RB1 despite a difficult matchup on the ground against the Falcons in Week 7.

Brock Purdy completed 21-of-29 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers’ 23-17, Week 6 win over the Commanders, adding 28 yards on five carries.

Purdy and the 49ers absolutely dominated the first two quarters, gaining 303 yards of total offense on 41 plays before the break. The situation would alter course in a hurry after Purdy lost his top option through the air in the final minute of the second quarter as Mike Evans departed with an aggravation of the Achilles injury that had him listed as questionable entering the game. The team would go on to gain only 72 additional yards after the intermission, allowing the Commanders the ability to claw their way back into the game in the fourth quarter. Even so, Purdy now holds the NFL record for highest career passer rating after qualifying for the statistic with his 1,500th pass attempt in the win, which pushes the 49ers to a perfect 6-0 record ahead of a Week 7 meeting with the Falcons before their bye the following week. Purdy remains a surefire QB1 against the pass-funnel Falcons.

Stefon Diggs caught 6-of-7 targets for 44 yards and a touchdown in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

While the end line looks good in the box score, the fact that Diggs continued to operate in a situational role following the departure of Terry McLaurin in the first quarter was somewhat concerning for the veteran receiver’s upside potential in McLaurin’s absence, although the fact that he came into the game listed as questionable with a hamstring injury could have influenced his snap rate. Either way, Diggs continues to produce when on the field, returning significant value for fantasy managers that invested a middle-round pick for his services this summer. Diggs will be an upside WR3 when the Commanders take on the division rival Eagles in Week 8 following their bye.

Antonio Williams caught 3-of-4 targets for 50 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

While the yardage total looks solid on paper, the fact that Williams had only four targets in a game in which veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin departed in the first quarter and quarterback Jayden Daniels attempted 40 passes in concerning. Williams continues to flash big play upside through a multitude of injuries to teammates but has yet to fully take advantage of the increase in opportunity, something fantasy managers will hope corrects when the Commanders come out of their bye to face the Eagles in Week 8.

Treylon Burks caught 4-of-6 targets for 66 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

Burks stepped into an increased role in the offense following the first quarter injury to Terry McLaurin, the latter of whom appears to have suffered a significant knee injury. The six targets ranked third on the team behind tight end Chig Okonkwo and veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, but a late injury could immediately halt his momentum. Burks was injured on a contested ball in the end zone on fourth down with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and was escorted to the locker room by training staff. Fantasy managers interested in a potential waiver addition will want to track updates from the team regarding his health in the coming days.

49ers beat reporter Jennifer Lee Chan reports Mike Evans’ Achilles is intact but he is expected to “miss a little time.”

Chan speculates that the window for his recovery could align with the team’s Week 8 bye week, meaning Evans would miss just one game with an aggravation of the Achilles injury that had him listed as questionable heading into Monday Night Football against the Commanders. All things considered, it’s solid news for Evans, the 49ers, and his fantasy managers. Expect a more concrete update from the team in the coming days as they limp into a Week 7 game against the Falcons down plentiful impact wide receivers.

Chig Okonkwo caught all seven targets for 69 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

Okonkwo was thrust into an increased role with the departure of lead wide receiver Terry McLaurin in the first quarter, operating as the primary option through the air for much of the game. Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs continued to operate in a situational role, making Okonkwo a priority start when the Commanders come out of their Week 7 bye to face the Eagles in Week 8.

Rachaad White rushed seven times for 27 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers, adding 30 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.

The Commanders immediately found themselves in a negative game environment, managing just 17 offensive plays and 90 yards of total offense in the first half. While White found the end zone from nine yards out in the fourth quarter on an in-breaking route, the backfield split amongst White, Jeremy McNichols, and Austin Ekeler was troubling for fantasy managers looking to the former as a potential option with lead back Jacory Croskey-Merritt on injured reserve. White and the Commanders head to their bye week at a 1-4-1 record and some serious questions to answer, the least of which is the current state of their backfield.
