Daniels throws two late TDs in loss to Eagles

Jayden Daniels completed 18-of-34 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns in the Commanders’ 24-22, Week 1 loss to the Eagles, adding five rushes for 31 additional yards.

It was a rough first outing for Daniels and the Commanders. Washington managed just 65 passing yards through the first three quarters, while Daniels completed 9-of-23 passes. In the fourth quarter, however, Daniels was far more effective, completing 9-of-11 passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns, with his first coming on a 10-yard pass to Stefon Diggs. On the following drive, Daniels would connect with rookie Antonio Williams twice, with the second resulting in a one-yard touchdown pass that Williams scraped off the turf but was ruled a touchdown after review. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, the Commanders ran a shovel pass to tight end John Bates that came up well short of the end zone, giving Philly the win after they recovered an onside kick attempt. Daniels was far from sharp in this one, but the Eagles deserve plenty of credit for keeping him in the pocket, forcing him off his spot, and making him uncomfortable. Of the five rush attempts Daniels managed on Sunday, only two came on designed runs. Five rush attempts feel like the floor for Daniels in any given week, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Commanders were more intentional about limiting designed run calls after last year’s injury-plagued season. Daniels will be a high-end QB1 next week when the Commanders take on the Cowboys in Dallas.

Daniels turned in one of the best games of his career on the ground on Sunday against the Giants. Daniels broke off an uncontested 38-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to put the Commanders up 19-6, and later broke free for a 26-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to again extend the Commanders’ lead. Both runs came on scrambles where the Giants seemingly forgot Daniels was a threat to run at any moment, and Daniels made the most of his opportunities. With the Commanders in range for a game-winning field goal late in overtime, Daniels inexplicably took a sack with no timeouts left on what appeared to be an attempt to center the ball in time for the game-winning try. We’ll likely get an explanation from both Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn on that final play, but Washington snatched defeat from the jaws of victory to move to 1-3-1 on the season. Despite the late-game gaffe, Daniels looked on-point for most of the afternoon, but struggled at times against the blitz, as the Giants brought pressure in several key spots to force Daniels to get the ball out quick or throw it away. Daniels looked like the elite dual threat fantasy managers want to see, and will be firmly in the QB1 ranks in next week’s game against the 49ers.

Schefter immediately added the caveat that the “overwhelming opinion” among doctors was that playing with a brace was a viable option. Daniels reportedly contemplated surgery after dislocating his elbow for the second time in less than a year. He opted against it and missed two games. Daniels is now set to return for Week 5 against the Giants. The Commanders could scale back his rushing for the time being, but OC David Blough already dismissed the idea that the playbook would be limited because of Daniels’ elbow injury.

Rapoport, typically cheery on the injury front, said that there are still “a lot of questions, going forward, for Jayden Daniels.” The bottom line is that Daniels is still rehabbing the elbow in his non-throwing arm. He should be able to throw and run effectively, putting him squarely in the QB1 tier, but re-injury risk remains a factor.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
Daniels appeared to be close to playing in Week 4 against the Colts before ultimately being ruled out. His being upgraded to a full participant in Thursday’s practice suggested he was a virtual lock to start in Week 5, barring any unexpected setbacks. Daniels will wear a brace on his left arm for the rest of the season in hopes of avoiding a three-peat of his dislocated elbow. Daniels will be without Stefon Diggs (hamstring) for Sunday’s game, and rainy/windy conditions are currently in the forecast. We’ll conservatively project him as a mid-to-low-end QB1 in what could be less-than-ideal conditions on Sunday.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
Daniels is practicing in full and is expected to return to the lineup this week. He has suffered the same elbow dislocation twice in the past year, but his game-changing running ability is a big part of what makes Daniels a potential superstar quarterback. Blough might be more tactile with how he calls quarterback runs, but they will still be in the playbook this week. Daniels will be a low-end QB1 once he is officially cleared to play.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo already reported that Daniels is expected to play in Week 5 and a full practice to open the week all but confirms his update. With Marcus Mariota also banged up, seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis would have been the next man up. He will back Daniels up as long as the latter doesn’t suffer any setbacks. The Commanders will likely dial back the designed runs for their franchise quarterback, but fantasy managers have to start him as a low-end QB1 as long as he’s on the field.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
Washington will be trying to keep their season on the tracks after falling to 1-3 against the Colts while having to go to third-stringer Athan Kaliakmanis. It’s unsurprising that they’re rushing Daniels back. Even if you factor in an elevated chance of re-injury, Daniels probably clears the QB1 line for fantasy managers against the Giants.
  • WAS Quarterback #8
The Commanders were forced to go to rookie seventh-rounder Athan Kaliakmanis after Mariota went down in yesterday’s game. Mariota sprained the MCL in the same knee during the preseason, and it would be surprising if Mariota was cleared in time for Week 5’s game against the Giants. If he’s unable to play, Kaliakmanis could make his first career start if Jayden Daniels (elbows) isn’t ready to return. Daniels traveled with the team to London for last week’s game and was limited in all three practices. He seemed close to playing against the Colts, and with the Commanders sitting at 1-3 and their season potentially on the line, it wouldn’t be surprising if he did suit up in a pivotal divisional matchup against the Giants.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
Daniels practiced in a limited capacity this week, but will ultimately sit out the Week 4 matchup against the Colts. According to Jones, sources in Washington believe Daniels could return in Week 5 against the Giants if he gets in a full week of practice this week. While Daniels is going to play through the same elbow injury he had last year, offseason surgery hasn’t been ruled out. Marcus Mariota will continue to start under center for the Commanders in Daniels’ absence.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
Daniels traveled with the team to London and was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but the team will err on the side of caution with Daniels, who is recovering from a dislocated elbow he suffered in Week 2 against the Cowboys. He’ll presumably log another limited practice on Friday, which could put him in line to return for Week 5’s game against the Giants, but it will be Marcus Mariota drawing the start on Sunday morning when the Commanders take on the Colts.

Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 6-of-11 targets for 69 yards in the Lions’ Week 5 win over the Cardinals.

Lions coach Dan Campbell tasked St. Brown with punt return duties (2/36) after Tom Kennedy got hurt. While St. Brown looked great weaving through traffic, his first return nearly ended in a lost fumble, but a teammate dove on the loose ball, bailing him out after it was punched out of St. Brown possession. St. Brown nearly had a 43-yard touchdown on a sideline play-action shot on the Lions’ seventh drive, but he couldn’t quite get his hands on it. He almost bagged short scores via out routes on the Lions’ eighth and ninth drives, but his coverage defender effectively challenged the pass on the first and the pass was just out of his reach on the second. He had a nice 36-yard catch-and-run on the eighth drive and nearly nabbed another explosive gain on the sixth drive, but Sam LaPorta accidentally knocked him down 11 yards downfield after St. Brown leapt over a downed Cardinals defender. He had another fumble recovered by a teammate after snagging a pass on a crosser. The Lions’ stud wide receiver will be an elite WR1 against the Packers following the Lions’ Week 6 bye.

Jared Goff completed 19-of-30 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns in the Lions’ 45-21, Week 5 win over the Cardinals, adding one rush for a one-yard touchdown.

Sacks and a few errant throws under pressure derailed the Lions’ first three drives. Goff got things back on track after that, guiding the offense to seven straight scoring drives, including six touchdowns. He even punched in a one-yard rushing touchdown via a quarterback sneak, marking his first rushing score since 2023. Goff could have boosted his passing yards total with a likely explosive gain by targeting an open Jameson Williams on the first drive after halftime, but he instead checked down to Sam LaPorta in the flats for an eight-yard pickup. The Lions are on bye in Week 6, but Goff will be a locked-in QB1 against the Packers in Week 7.

Kyle Williams caught all three of his targets for 91 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots’ Week 5 win against the Raiders.

Williams caught a beautifully thrown 49-yard score from Drake Maye, who had four touchdown passes to go along with 376 yards through the air in the blowout victory. Williams ran a route on 19 of the team’s 42 drop backs with Mack Hollins on injured reserve. He also came down with a long grab in the second half that put the Pats in position to take a four-score lead. A.J. Brown’s eventual return to the New England offense — as soon as this week against the Jets — will further limit Williams’ snaps and routes. He won’t be playable in most formats going forward.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught 2-of-3 targets for 22 yards in the Chargers’ Week 5 loss to the Broncos.

Valdes-Scantling finished second in receiving yards for the Chargers against the Broncos. That’s not great. The veteran wideout is going to get some opportunities because of the injuries, but that shouldn’t equate to a chance to help a fantasy roster. He’ll face the Chiefs in Week 6.

Sam Darnold completed 18-of-29 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Seahawks’ 32-29, Week 5 loss to the 49ers.

It was a rough outing for Darnold, who was picked off on his first pass attempt of the day and absorbed a season-high five sacks. His lone touchdown pass came on a 16-yard pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Darnold completed a short two-yard pass to JSN, who turned it upfield for the score to give the Seahawks the 23-21 lead with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. On the Seahawks’ final drive of the game, Darnold found JSN for a 35-yard completion, but three straight incompletions, including an uncharacteristic drop by JSN, put the Seahawks in a fourth-and-10 situation that they were unable to convert after Cooper Kupp came up a yard short on his second reception of the night. Darnold has now thrown seven touchdowns and six interceptions in his last three games since returning from injury, and now faces a short week to get ready for the Broncos on Thursday night. He profiles as a mid-to-low-end QB2 in what could be a tough road matchup.

Tre Harris caught 2-of-4 targets for 16 yards in the Chargers’ Week 5 loss to the Broncos.

Harris was a complete non-factor even against the depleted Broncos’ secondary. The second-year wideout was the top target with Ladd McConkey and Quinton Johnston unavailable, and that extra attention didn’t help. Harris will try and bounce back in Week 6 against the Chiefs.

Brock Purdy completed 19-of-29 passes for 189 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the 49ers’ 32-29, Week 5 win over the Seahawks.

Purdy and the 49ers made the most of several short fields in this one. After an interception by Sam Darnold on the Seahawks’ first drive of the game, Purdy led a short 18-yard drive that he capped with a two-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans to give the Niners an early lead. Purdy would orchestrate a long scoring drive in the fourth quarter, completing seven passes for 89 yards, with his final completion resulting in a seven-yard touchdown to Brandin Cooks. The Seahawks became the first team to sack Purdy this season, bringing him down three times in the backfield in the second half, but Purdy was able to evade pressure for the entire second half. Purdy and the Niners get a juicy Week 6 matchup next Monday against the Commanders, where he will profile as a solid QB1.

Charlie Kolar caught 3-of-4 targets for 37 yards with a lost fumble in the Chargers’ Week 5 loss to the Broncos.

Kolar tied for the team lead in catches, and finished with the most receiving yards. Unfortunately, 19 of those came on the first play, and were followed by a fumble. Oronde Gadsden didn’t catch his only target and Hayden Rucci had just one catch — for a touchdown, to be fair — so Kolar sadly appears to be the one “reliable” receiving target for the Chargers’ tight end room. That doesn’t mean he’s a great fantasy play for Week 6 against the Chiefs, however. On the contrary.
