Nate Boerkircher catches first career pass in win

Nate Boerkircher caught his lone target for nine yards in the Jaguars’ Week 1 win over the Browns.

Boerkircher was drafted to primarily be a blocking tight end. The 25-year-old played 38 snaps in his rookie debut, 26 of them coming for run blocking. With Brenton Strange operating as the receiving tight end, its unlikely Boerkircher achieves fantasy relevance within his role.

Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst discuss the Dallas Cowboys defense after struggling against the New York Giants and if that unit will be improved after last season.

Per Shipley, Koziol “will earn reps” in the regular season if he keeps making plays. The Jaguars drafted Koziol in Round 5 and fellow TE Nate Boerkircher in Round 2 this year, but Shipley believes it’s been a ‘relatively quiet offseason for Boerkircher,” and Boerkircher missed Thursday’s practice for an undisclosed reason. He missed a practice last week as well. Koziol has shown “a real ability to make plays on the ball.” He is unlikely to garner a fantasy-relevant workload playing behind TE1 Brenton Strange, but Koziol is a name to know moving forward.

Shipley said the Jaguars drafting Texas A&M TE Nate Boerkircher and Houston TE Tanner Koziol in the 2026 draft does not mean the Jaguars coaching staff has a smaller role planned for Strange, who last season 46 catches, 540 yards, and three touchdowns as the team’s TE1. Shipley expected Strange’s pass game involvement to grow as the Jaguars deploy more tight end-heavy offensive sets. The Jaguars, Shipley said, are “clearly hoping that injecting the [tight end] room with talent should allow Strange to produce at an even higher level than before.” Last season Strange was targeted on 21 percent of his routes, which ranked 25th out of 58 qualifying tight ends. Though he’ll likely be the team’s third or fourth option in the passing game, Strange should be a viable fantasy option in 12 and 14-team leagues this season.

Boerkircher sat out on Monday, but we do not yet know why. Koziol looks “smooth in space” and took the advantage of his opportunities. His stand out showings as a pass-catcher have “helped him make some real progress at the start of OTAs.” Kozial was a bit of a dynasty darling in this season’s rookie draft cycle. We do not expect him to be relevant in re-draft this season, but these reports are encouraging for his long-term outlook.
  • Boerkircher was the No. 56 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and will compete for the team’s TE2 role. He is primarily a blocking tight end and is unlikely to have fantasy-relevancy as a pass-catcher. However, his blocking utilization will play a key role in the Jaguars’ rushing attack and efficiency for Chris Rodriguez and Bhayshul Tuten in the backfield. With Boerkircher signing his rookie contract, the entire Jaguars 2026 rookie class is signed.
  • In his “bold predictions” piece, Shipley said he also believes Boerkircher will play on 45.0 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, catch 16 passes, produce 200 yards and score three times. In other words, he is very unlikely to be fantasy-relevant. That said, Shipley’s most notable point is that Boerkircher “has in-line blocking value as well as the ability to be detached from the line of scrimmage” and can block well on the outside, which is a plus for the Jaguars’ run game. The team has consistently harped on improving the run game this offseason. If Boerkircher can quickly establish himself as the Jaguars’ TE2, the impact could trickle down to RBs Chris Rodriguez and Bhayshul Tuten.
  • Boerkircher (6’6/245) caught 38 passes across 52 FBS games for Nebraska and A&M. His 19-catch 2025 for the Aggies was his lone double-digit receptions total. Boerkircher’s calling card is his punishing blocks and “taste for contact,” in the words of NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler does believe Boerkircher, 24, offers some “catch-point talent” after his somewhat surprising final season in College Station. Although his advanced age and lack of statistical production make him a long shot to produce fantasy points, he’s perhaps worth a final-round flier in five-round rookie drafts. The Jaguars are excited about their run game this season and, at the very least, Boerkircher can serve as a reliable blocker in two-tight end sets.

Chris Jones (calf) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Jones was a midweek addition to the injury report ahead of Week 1, though he ultimately played through the knee issue. Despite being limited to roughly half of the snaps on defense, Jones still managed to make an impact by scooping up a Bo Nix fumble. A limited practice on Wednesday shouldn’t be too concerning for his odds of suiting up in Week 2.

Patrick Mahomes (knee) is practicing in full for Week 2 against the Colts.

Rashee Rice (knee) is also practicing in full. Both players underwent offseason knee procedures and had slow ramp-ups during the summer. Both players were active for Week 1 and found the end zone. Mahomes did so on the ground, putting the notion that he would be hampered by the knee issue to rest. The passing attack still looked shaky in Week 1, but there are no health concerns for either player. Mahomes will be a low-end QB1 versus the Colts, and Rice will hold a spot in the WR2 ranks.

Josh Simmons (back) did not practice Wednesday.

Simmons missed the Chiefs’ 2026 opener with the back issue and isn’t likely to suit up this week either. Kahlil Benson, a UDFA rookie, took his spot at left tackle in Week 1. Benson allowed three pressures and was penalized once, but he did not allow a sack and held his own in the run game. He will draw the start in Week 2.

Ravens LT Ronnie Stanley (toe) did not practice on Wednesday.

Ravens LG John Simpson (groin) was also sidelined. Both players are long-time veterans, so hopefully this is more of a maintenance issue than anything else. Losing the left side of the offensive line would make things more challenging for QB Lamar Jackson against the Saints.

Patriots CB Carlton Davis (neck) did not practice on Wednesday.

Neck injuries are concerning. Davis is seemingly in jeopardy of missing his team’s Week 2 game against the Steelers. Hopefully, this is only a minor issue for the veteran cornerback.

Steelers CB Joey Porter (NIR/conditioning) was limited on Wednesday.

Porter’s strange situation continues. The Steelers’ No. 1 cornerback spent August on the active/physically unable to perform list with a back injury. He also spent August pursuing a lucrative contract extension. Porter did not play in Week 1. Steelers coach Mike McCarthy said he increased his workload today, but he is still not guaranteed to play in Week 2.

DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) is not expected to play in Week 2 against the

The Cowboys are already without fellow starter Malik Hooker because of a broken bone in his wrist. Overshown is expected to miss a week or two with a hamstring strain. After getting decimated by Jaxon Dart in Week 1, the Cowboys will now have to face the Commanders without two of their starters on defense. This is as good as bounce-back spots get for the Washington offense.

Steelers WR Michael Pittman (foot) was limited on Wednesday.

This is a new injury for the Steelers’ leading receiver. Typically, limited sessions on Wednesday are nothing to worry about, but since it is a new injury and we do not know when it happened, checking in on his Thursday status will be worthwhile. If Pittman is unable to play, it would negatively impact QB Aaron Rodgers’ outlook.

Anthony Richardson (groin) did not practice Wednesday.

It’s unclear how Richardson picked up the groin injury after not playing a snap in Week 1. He earned the backup job during the summer but will now hand that over to Riley Leonard if he isn’t able to suit up this week.

Alec Pierce (heel) is practicing in full for Week 2 against the Chiefs.

The Athletic’s James Boyd noted that Pierce also had his wrist X-rayed after the game, though neither that nor the heel injury is a concern for him going forward. Ashton Dulin missed practice with a hamstring injury. Pierce was targeted six times in Week 1 despite having his snaps limited. He caught four passes for 61 yards. He will be a boom/bust WR3 for his Week 3 matchup with Kansas City.
