Kenneth Walker goes nuclear in first game in KC

Kenneth Walker rushed 23 times for 173 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ Week 1 win over the Broncos, adding 18 yards and a touchdown on three receptions.

Walker single-handedly out-gained the entire Denver offense on the evening as he was the clear point of emphasis in Patrick Mahomes’ first game back after tearing his ACL in 2025. He was fed seven carries on the team’s first nine offensive plays run from scrimmage, a drive that would result in a 15-yard Mahomes rushing touchdown on the team’s first possession. The highlight of the game for the explosive back was a 60-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one, in which he bounced the football outside and dusted the secondary on his way to the end zone. He would add a receiving score on a “Kansas City Special” later in the game, taking a Mahomes shuttle pass to the end zone from two yards out to further bolster his counting stats. What’s more, walker played all but five offensive snaps in the first half with the game still within reason, highlighting a massive ceiling for the remainder of the season. Walker is a locked-in RB1 ahead of a Week 2 matchup against the Colts.

The Chiefs once again leaned hard on the rushing attack, running the ball 24 times while attempting 30 passes on the day. Walker breezed through a lifeless LA defense from start to finish. On many of his carries Walker was not touched until he was five or six yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Walker, who accounted for 19 of the team’s 24 rushing attempts, is perhaps the most important player in fantasy football through Week 6. He’ll be an RB1 in Week 7 against his former mates in Seattle.

Walker found the end zone twice in 19 seconds in this one. After scoring on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter, Walker then broke free for a 22-yard run on his next play after the Chiefs recovered a fumbled kickoff by the Raiders. Walker’s longest run of the game was an explosive burst down the right sideline that saw him pick up 76 yards, but he was tackled at the Raiders eight-yard line and lost out on a scoring opportunity two plays later when Tyquan Thornton came down in the end zone with an eight-yard reception. Walker has now scored multiple touchdowns in three of four games this season and has 621 yards from scrimmage and seven total touchdowns. He’s been more than fantasy managers could have hoped for through the first four weeks, but they will have to manage without him next week as the Chiefs enter their bye week. He’ll be firmly in the RB1 mix in Week 6, however, when the Chiefs play host to the winless Chargers.

The two-touchdown outing was Walker’s second in three games as a Chief after he had only one such effort for the Seahawks last season. His 20 touches were a rather remarkable total seeing as the Chiefs were limited to 49 plays with the Dolphins attempting to play keep away. He was not efficient, but Patrick Mahomes was. That’s the new reality for defenses facing the Chiefs, as this is no longer a stop Mahomes at all costs team. You now have to pick your poison, which is going to lead to many more blow-up efforts for KWIII. Perhaps that will include Week 4 in Vegas against the Raiders.

Johnson has turned 14 touches into 103 scrimmage yards thus far. Evidently pleased with his fifth-round rookie, Reid wants to keep “allowing Emmett to grow,” in turn taking “a little bit of load off” starting RB Kenneth Walker. Reid notes that Walker wants the ball on every play and is not asking for a lighter workload, but Reid is seeking “a nice balance with those two in there,” which “keeps them even more fresh as the season goes on.” Walker, of course, remains an elite RB1. Johnson, however, should be rostered in all 12-team leagues as a high-upside bench stash that could return standalone value before long.

Walker has now notched 178 combined yards or more in each of his new team’s first two games to start the season. In addition to the gaudy yardage numbers, Walker saw 10 targets on 47 Patrick Mahomes pass attempts in the overtime victory, while accounting for all but four running back opportunities. His backfield opportunity share, touchdown equity, and pass game involvement make Walker a top-tier fantasy asset for those that invested a second-round pick in his services this offseason. The only micro-blemish on his record against the Colts was a sequence of carries at the end of the second quarter in which he was stuffed from the one-yard line on three straight plays, with the team eventually scoring on fourth down via a touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy. Walker remains a top-tier RB1 ahead of a road date with the much more forgiving Dolphins in Week 3.

What is clear in the wake of the Chiefs waiving Emari Demercado is that they don’t really have another player that qualifies as a passing-down back besides Walker without squinting. The other backs they kept are Emmett Johnson, a Day 3 rookie, and Brashard Smith, a gadget player without enough size to really block. Perhaps the Chiefs will address this in street free agency ahead of the season, but as things stand, it certainly seems like Walker will be involved on all three downs.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid and QB Patrick Mahomes believe last season’s run game failed to make defenses respect their play-action run fakes. With Walker now on board, the Chiefs believe both the run game and play-action game will improve. The staff has catered to Walker by installing more plays from under center, which Walker prefers to shotgun. “One way Walker can help transform the offense,” per Taylor, “is by becoming a true dual-threat player.” Reid believes Walker’s “receiving skills and ability to make defenders miss” will allow Reid to incorporate “one of his favorite passing concepts: the variety of plays where a play-action fake to the running back is executed before a short screen pass is thrown back to the same running back.” Walker should be expected to handle a high-end, dual-threat workload. He is a locked-in RB1 with immense upside.

Walker was held out of practice recently because of the issue, but this seems to be as minor as it gets. It’s safe to assume Walker will be back at practice soon, likely without any limitations. Walker has been going at the top of the second round of fantasy drafts. This little injury scare shouldn’t move that ADP in the slightest. He remains a strong RB1 bet this year.

This probably isn’t a major cause for concern — if you’ve ever drafted Kenneth Walker before, you know he misses plenty of practice time — the Chiefs are likely just taking it easy on the man expected to be their bellcow back this season. But the more practice he misses, the more serious we’ll take it. Stay tuned.

Newell writes that the way the Chiefs have been getting the ball to Walker has been “one of the most striking parts of camp,” while adding that Walker has been the primary target in the screen game and in the red zone. It’s about as encouraging a report as fantasy managers could hope for if they’re eyeing Walker in drafts this season. The 25-year-old back signed a three-year, $40.05 million contract with the Chiefs this offseason and could operate as the true bell cow in Andy Reid’s offense this season. Newell also noted that the Chiefs don’t appear to be alternating backs on every other series as they have in recent years, which would only raise Walker’s fantasy ceiling for this upcoming season. Walker already figures to be in the running for a top-12 fantasy season at his position, but he could be in line for a career year if his reported camp usage holds up in the regular season.

Jordan Watkins caught his only target for 22 yards in the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Commanders.

Watkins drew the start in place of the injured Deebo Samuel but was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, with 23 of Brock Purdy’s 29 targets going to the team’s top three options in Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans, and George Kittle. Evans departed at the end of the second quarter with an aggravation of his Achilles injury, something that appears likely to cost the veteran a Week 7 game against the Falcons. That could leave Watkins in line for a second consecutive start, although the upside remains modest. Fantasy managers are likely best leaving both Watkins and veteran Brandin Cooks on the waiver wire, the latter of whom caught 1-of-2 targets for 13 yards against the Commanders.

George Kittle caught 5-of-8 targets for 69 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Commanders.

Kittle got the scoring started with an 11-yard touchdown on a dime from Brock Purdy to the corner of the end zone, contributing to the offense steadily through a dominant first half before pushing his yardage totals with a 35-yard reception to start the third quarter. It was a tale of two halves for the San Francisco offense, who managed a staggering 303 yards of total offense in the first half and only 73 yards of total offense after the break, likely heavily influenced by the departure of Mike Evans at the end of the second quarter. Evens is expected to miss the team’s Week 8 contest against the Falcons, where Kittle could step into addition volume in his already-solid TE1 profile.

Christian McCaffrey rushed 16 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Commanders, adding 53 yards on nine receptions.

McCaffrey set a season high with 25 touches and 26 opportunities in a game played without Deebo Samuel and in which Mike Evans departed just before the half with an aggravation of his Achilles injury. The veteran workhorse back again proved how high his ceiling can be with such a robust role through the air. A second quarter fumble was his first lost fumble since 2024, a stretch spanning over 500 touches since he last lost a fumble. McCaffrey remains an elite RB1 despite a difficult matchup on the ground against the Falcons in Week 7.

Brock Purdy completed 21-of-29 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers’ 23-17, Week 6 win over the Commanders, adding 28 yards on five carries.

Purdy and the 49ers absolutely dominated the first two quarters, gaining 303 yards of total offense on 41 plays before the break. The situation would alter course in a hurry after Purdy lost his top option through the air in the final minute of the second quarter as Mike Evans departed with an aggravation of the Achilles injury that had him listed as questionable entering the game. The team would go on to gain only 72 additional yards after the intermission, allowing the Commanders the ability to claw their way back into the game in the fourth quarter. Even so, Purdy now holds the NFL record for highest career passer rating after qualifying for the statistic with his 1,500th pass attempt in the win, which pushes the 49ers to a perfect 6-0 record ahead of a Week 7 meeting with the Falcons before their bye the following week. Purdy remains a surefire QB1 against the pass-funnel Falcons.

Stefon Diggs caught 6-of-7 targets for 44 yards and a touchdown in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

While the end line looks good in the box score, the fact that Diggs continued to operate in a situational role following the departure of Terry McLaurin in the first quarter was somewhat concerning for the veteran receiver’s upside potential in McLaurin’s absence, although the fact that he came into the game listed as questionable with a hamstring injury could have influenced his snap rate. Either way, Diggs continues to produce when on the field, returning significant value for fantasy managers that invested a middle-round pick for his services this summer. Diggs will be an upside WR3 when the Commanders take on the division rival Eagles in Week 8 following their bye.

Antonio Williams caught 3-of-4 targets for 50 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

While the yardage total looks solid on paper, the fact that Williams had only four targets in a game in which veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin departed in the first quarter and quarterback Jayden Daniels attempted 40 passes in concerning. Williams continues to flash big play upside through a multitude of injuries to teammates but has yet to fully take advantage of the increase in opportunity, something fantasy managers will hope corrects when the Commanders come out of their bye to face the Eagles in Week 8.

Treylon Burks caught 4-of-6 targets for 66 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

Burks stepped into an increased role in the offense following the first quarter injury to Terry McLaurin, the latter of whom appears to have suffered a significant knee injury. The six targets ranked third on the team behind tight end Chig Okonkwo and veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, but a late injury could immediately halt his momentum. Burks was injured on a contested ball in the end zone on fourth down with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and was escorted to the locker room by training staff. Fantasy managers interested in a potential waiver addition will want to track updates from the team regarding his health in the coming days.

49ers beat reporter Jennifer Lee Chan reports Mike Evans’ Achilles is intact but he is expected to “miss a little time.”

Chan speculates that the window for his recovery could align with the team’s Week 8 bye week, meaning Evans would miss just one game with an aggravation of the Achilles injury that had him listed as questionable heading into Monday Night Football against the Commanders. All things considered, it’s solid news for Evans, the 49ers, and his fantasy managers. Expect a more concrete update from the team in the coming days as they limp into a Week 7 game against the Falcons down plentiful impact wide receivers.

Chig Okonkwo caught all seven targets for 69 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

Okonkwo was thrust into an increased role with the departure of lead wide receiver Terry McLaurin in the first quarter, operating as the primary option through the air for much of the game. Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs continued to operate in a situational role, making Okonkwo a priority start when the Commanders come out of their Week 7 bye to face the Eagles in Week 8.

Rachaad White rushed seven times for 27 yards in the Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the 49ers, adding 30 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.

The Commanders immediately found themselves in a negative game environment, managing just 17 offensive plays and 90 yards of total offense in the first half. While White found the end zone from nine yards out in the fourth quarter on an in-breaking route, the backfield split amongst White, Jeremy McNichols, and Austin Ekeler was troubling for fantasy managers looking to the former as a potential option with lead back Jacory Croskey-Merritt on injured reserve. White and the Commanders head to their bye week at a 1-4-1 record and some serious questions to answer, the least of which is the current state of their backfield.
