ESPN’s Jeremy Fowlers reports Michael Penix (knee) is “not yet ready for live game action.”

Fowler said Penix, still recovering from his 2025 ACL injury, “wants to be fully confident before stepping onto the field. And my understanding is the Falcons are leaving the comfort level part of his recovery up to him.” “Penix is coming off his third ACL reconstruction, which is a lot of ACL reconstructions,” ESPN’s Dan Graziano added. “I believe it takes a lot of mental work to convince yourself it’s OK to go back out there and play. If Penix needs more time, I’m sure the Falcons will give it to him, though I believe we will see him on the field at some point this season.” That would leave Tua Tagovailoa as the team’s presumed starter if Tua can play through the oblique strain that sidelined him in Week 1 against the Steelers. If Tua can’t go, the Falcons could be forced to start Cooper Rush for another game or two. Rush, who had the lowest drop back EPA of any QB in Week 1, makes Drake London and Kyle Pitts iffy starts in 12-team fantasy formats.

Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst discuss the Dallas Cowboys defense after struggling against the New York Giants and if that unit will be improved after last season.

This all but rules him out for Week 2. Cooper Rush is getting treatment for the back injury he played through in Week 1 and can also be considered questionable. With Michael Penix not quite ready to return from his 2025 knee injury yet, the Falcons could be down to Jack Strand for their date with the Panthers.
  • ATL Quarterback #13
Stefanski on Wednesday wouldn’t rule out any of his four quarterbacks of the apocalypse, including rookie QB Jack Strand, who flashed in preseason action against second and third-team defenses. Rush as abysmal in the Falcons’ Week 1 loss to the Steelers. He was 10.5 percent below his expected pass rate, throwing for 143 yards, one touchdown, and two picks. There’s almost no way Strand would be a downgrade for Week 2 if he gets the nod. Michael Penix (knee) will continued to be sidelined and Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) is questionable at best. Strand should be picked up in superflex leagues.

But, Rapoport added, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll play this week. “Generally, for a throwing position, it’s not usually one week,” Rapoport added. Cooper Rush could be awaiting the Panthers in Week 2, and based on how Rush played in Week 1, that means the Panthers defense could go from allowing 59 points to being a streamable defense in Week 2.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
It sounds like Penix isn’t comfortable just yet on his knee, but it should be sooner rather than later, and the original time frame here was Week 2 or 3. The plan will definitely be to start Penix when he is healthy. Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski offered zero help on the situation on Monday; we’ll probably get a better update from the Falcons on Wednesday. It’s worth noting that Penix did practice in full all last week, but this may be more of a mental hurdle than a physical one.
  • ATL Tight End #8
Pitts owes most of this to a poor performance by Cooper Rush under center. Pitts played on 39 of the team’s 61 snaps and ran a route on 22 of their 29 dropbacks. He simply wasn’t a factor with Rush struggling to move the ball down the field. We should note that the Falcons were very run-heavy with Rush at quarterback, and Charlie Woerner played 38 snaps and was on the field for 22 run-blocking snaps to just 16 for Pitts. If the Falcons are going to continue to be so focused on rushing the ball, that could cut into some of Pitts’ snaps and usage.
  • ATL Wide Receiver #5
London also added six yards on one rush as the Falcons looked to do anything to get the ball in the hands of their best receiver. The 25-year-old was an absolute non-factor in this one, largely because Cooper Rush was highly inefficient and ineffective under center. The role is not in question though. London played 60 of the team’s 61 snaps and ran a route on 28 of their 29 dropbacks. However, he will be tough to trust with Cooper Rush (and probably even Tua Tagovailoa) under center. London has a much better matchup next week against the Panthers, but there is some fear that he’s more of a WR2 option until Michael Penix (knee) returns.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Tua Tagovailoa is out with a back issue for Week 1, and Cooper Rush is dealing with back problems of his own, though he will attempt to play through them. Tua’s timeline to return is unknown. Already down to their third-string quarterback, the Falcons desperately need Penix back. He practiced in full this week, meaning that a return in Week 2 looks likely. All Atlanta pass-catchers will get a boost once Penix takes over.

The oblique injury Tua suffered on Thursday will be enough to sideline him for the season opener. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Tagovailoa will be week-to-week with the injury, so his status will be one to monitor when next week’s injury report is released. An up-and-down offseason for the 28-year-old quarterback that started with a back injury and an underwhelming training camp has now snowballed into him missing Week 1 after he was handed the start in large because Michael Penix (knee) wasn’t deemed ready to go just yet. Given the circumstances that led to him being named the starter, it’s safe to say Tua was already on a short leash entering the season. If Penix is able to go in Week 2 against the Panthers, it’s possible Tua’s 2026 debut will be further delayed regardless of his health.

Tua wasn’t spotted during the portion of practice open to the media, so it’s possible he takes the field later in the day. That said, his absence from practice on Friday wouldn’t bode well for his Week 1 availability after he popped up on Thursday’s injury report with an oblique issue. Veteran Cooper Rush took all first-team snaps for the Falcons on Thursday and would be in line to start on Sunday if Tua is unable to go. We should have an updated injury report soon, which will lay out Tagovailoa’s availability heading into the weekend.

Tagovailoa was seen grabbing at his back before removing himself from team drills earlier today. It turns out he is dealing with an oblique issue. The media viewing session ended before the Falcons began team drills, so it was unclear whether he rejoined his teammates. Backup QB Cooper Rush later told reporters that he took all first-team reps thereafter. Tagovailoa is now firmly in the questionable column for Week 1.

Chris Jones (calf) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Jones was a midweek addition to the injury report ahead of Week 1, though he ultimately played through the knee issue. Despite being limited to roughly half of the snaps on defense, Jones still managed to make an impact by scooping up a Bo Nix fumble. A limited practice on Wednesday shouldn’t be too concerning for his odds of suiting up in Week 2.

Patrick Mahomes (knee) is practicing in full for Week 2 against the Colts.

Rashee Rice (knee) is also practicing in full. Both players underwent offseason knee procedures and had slow ramp-ups during the summer. Both players were active for Week 1 and found the end zone. Mahomes did so on the ground, putting the notion that he would be hampered by the knee issue to rest. The passing attack still looked shaky in Week 1, but there are no health concerns for either player. Mahomes will be a low-end QB1 versus the Colts, and Rice will hold a spot in the WR2 ranks.

Josh Simmons (back) did not practice Wednesday.

Simmons missed the Chiefs’ 2026 opener with the back issue and isn’t likely to suit up this week either. Kahlil Benson, a UDFA rookie, took his spot at left tackle in Week 1. Benson allowed three pressures and was penalized once, but he did not allow a sack and held his own in the run game. He will draw the start in Week 2.

Ravens LT Ronnie Stanley (toe) did not practice on Wednesday.

Ravens LG John Simpson (groin) was also sidelined. Both players are long-time veterans, so hopefully this is more of a maintenance issue than anything else. Losing the left side of the offensive line would make things more challenging for QB Lamar Jackson against the Saints.

Patriots CB Carlton Davis (neck) did not practice on Wednesday.

Neck injuries are concerning. Davis is seemingly in jeopardy of missing his team’s Week 2 game against the Steelers. Hopefully, this is only a minor issue for the veteran cornerback.

Steelers CB Joey Porter (NIR/conditioning) was limited on Wednesday.

Porter’s strange situation continues. The Steelers’ No. 1 cornerback spent August on the active/physically unable to perform list with a back injury. He also spent August pursuing a lucrative contract extension. Porter did not play in Week 1. Steelers coach Mike McCarthy said he increased his workload today, but he is still not guaranteed to play in Week 2.

DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) is not expected to play in Week 2 against the

The Cowboys are already without fellow starter Malik Hooker because of a broken bone in his wrist. Overshown is expected to miss a week or two with a hamstring strain. After getting decimated by Jaxon Dart in Week 1, the Cowboys will now have to face the Commanders without two of their starters on defense. This is as good as bounce-back spots get for the Washington offense.

Steelers WR Michael Pittman (foot) was limited on Wednesday.

This is a new injury for the Steelers’ leading receiver. Typically, limited sessions on Wednesday are nothing to worry about, but since it is a new injury and we do not know when it happened, checking in on his Thursday status will be worthwhile. If Pittman is unable to play, it would negatively impact QB Aaron Rodgers’ outlook.

Anthony Richardson (groin) did not practice Wednesday.

It’s unclear how Richardson picked up the groin injury after not playing a snap in Week 1. He earned the backup job during the summer but will now hand that over to Riley Leonard if he isn’t able to suit up this week.

Alec Pierce (heel) is practicing in full for Week 2 against the Chiefs.

The Athletic’s James Boyd noted that Pierce also had his wrist X-rayed after the game, though neither that nor the heel injury is a concern for him going forward. Ashton Dulin missed practice with a hamstring injury. Pierce was targeted six times in Week 1 despite having his snaps limited. He caught four passes for 61 yards. He will be a boom/bust WR3 for his Week 3 matchup with Kansas City.
