Panthers coach Dave Canales said Jonathon Brooks aggravated his groin injury in Week 2 against the Falcons and is considered “day to day.”

The good news is that this is unrelated to Brooks’ history of knee injuries and it sounds like he has a shot at suiting up for Week 3. The bad news is that Brooks originally suffered this groin injury during training camp and is still dealing with it two weeks into the season. Brooks only had five carries and one catch before exiting Week 2’s win over Atlanta. Even if he is healthy for next week’s game, Brooks is barely on the fantasy radar right now.

Brooks will be sidelined for at least six weeks. It opens the door for Chuba Hubbard to dominate the Carolina backfield for the next month and a half, with AJ Dillon chipping in as a breather back. Through two game Hubbard leads the Panthers backfield with 22 rushes for 102 yards. He’s run a route on 50 percent of the team’s drop backs and have five targets. The Panthers, meanwhile, have the second highest pass rate over expected through Week 2. Hubbard will be a locked-in top-20 option going forward. Dillon can be stashed in case Hubbard gets dinged up while Brooks is recovering.

He’s undergoing tests to determine the severity. That’s not normally the sort of story that ends with “and Brooks played a full allotment of snaps in Week 3,” but we’ll see. The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports that Brooks is “considered week to week.” Brooks should be regarded as a drop candidate in shallow leagues on snaps and opportunities alone, but if he’s not healthy, that may expand to more leagues.
  • CAR Running Back #25
Brooks went down on a routine tackle in the fourth quarter and was slow to get up. He eventually left for the locker room with a towel over his head. Brooks missed time late in training camp with the groin issue and it seemingly flared up against the Falcons. He had five carries for 16 yards before leaving the game. AJ Dillon will back up Chuba Hubbard if Brooks is unavailable for Week 3.
  • CAR Running Back #25
In his first regular season action, Brooks played well behind lead back Chuba Hubbard, who finished the day with ten carries and three receptions. The highlight of Brooks’ day came on a sideline throw from Bryce Young that went for 48 yards. Brooks, coming off multiple major knee injuries, showed impressive burst and speed on the catch and run. That Hubbard was the team’s primary option inside the ten yard line is bad news for Brooks’ touchdown upside in the Carolina offense. For now he profiles as a bench stash in case Hubbard misses time this season.
  • CAR Running Back #25
Brooks missed time late in camp with “general soreness” that was later revealed to be a minor groin issue. He was limited in practice this week, but that seems like nothing more than maintenance for a player who has barely played football over the past two seasons. Dave Canales is understandably keeping his workload light, even in practice. Brooks is expected to split carries with Chuba Hubbard in Week 1. He will be a high-risk FLEX play before we know what his role looks like.
  • CAR Running Back #25
We’ll have a better sense of Brooks’ Week 1 availability in a few hours when the Panthers release their final injury report for the week, but the third-year back logged limited practices on Wednesday and Thursday and is trending in the right direction for Sunday’s game against the Bears. If he’s active, Brooks is expected to split touches with Chuba Hubbard, which could put a hard cap on both players’ upside in the season-opener.
  • CAR Running Back #25
Now we know what Brooks has been dealing with for the past week or so. Beginning the week with a limited session is a good sign regarding his Week 1 availability, but obviously we hope to see him practice fully as soon as possible, given his extensive injury history. He could end up rotating in behind RB Chuba Hubbard if active.
  • CAR Running Back #25
Head coach Dave Canales declined to provide an update on Brooks’ status Monday after saying last week that he was “very optimistic” that Brooks would play in Week 1 against the Bears. The Panthers won’t release their first official injury report until Wednesday, which should give us a better idea of where things stand for Brooks in the season opener. The 23-year-old back has had a strong training camp and is expected to split work with Chuba Hubbard if active. Both RBs should be viewed in the RB3 range for Week 1 if active.
  • CAR Running Back #25
Brooks is dealing with some soreness that the team hasn’t elaborated on any further. It’s likely maintenance for a player who has barely played any football over the past two seasons, but this is still a situation for fantasy managers to monitor. With Chuba Hubbard back at practice after missing time with a hamstring issue, we’re likely looking at a backfield by committee in Week 1. Both backs will be stuck in the RB3 ranks versus Chicago.
  • CAR Running Back #25
Brooks has now worked to the side in two straight practices and Panthers coaches are being cagy about his ailment. It’s not a great develop less than two weeks ahead of Carolina’s season opener. Chub Hubbard, meanwhile, is back at practice after being sidelined with a hamstring injury for a couple weeks. Brooks’ practice status will be very much worth monitoring in the coming days. He appears to be nothing more than a touchdown-dependent flex for right now.

Texans placed Jawhar Jordan on injured reserve.

Jordan was elevated from the practice squad over the weekend and backed up Woody Marks on Sunday. He ran six times for 43 yards and a score. His 25-yard touchdown run was the Texans’ longest rush attempt of the season. The team hasn’t disclosed Jordan’s injury yet, but he will miss at least four games while on IR. Dare Ogunbowale will serve as Houston’s RB2 until David Montgomery is healthy.

Rashee Rice (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday.

Right tackle Jaylon Moore was also held out of practice with a concussion. Rice went down with the hamstring issue in Week 4. Even with a bye week to heal before Week 6, he wasn’t ready to return. A DNP today suggests he will miss at least one more game. Xavier Worthy led the Chiefs with seven catches for 73 yards in his absence last week. He would be in line for another high-usage game if Rice remains out for Week 7’s game against the Seahawks.

Baker Mayfield (thumb) returned to practice Wednesday.

Mayfield hasn’t played since dislocating his thumb in Week 3. As of late last week, he hadn’t even thrown a football since suffering the injury. Todd Bowles told reporters on Monday that he’s preparing for Jalon Daniels to start, but Mayfield’s return to practice puts things up in the air. His practice statuses over the next few days will be telling. For now, fantasy managers should still plan on seeing Daniels under center, but this is a situation to monitor throughout the week.

Adonai Mitchell (finger) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Mitchell has missed the past four weeks with a finger injury that required a “small procedure” to fix. Though a limited practice today doesn’t guarantee he will be back for Week 7, it’s a big step in the right direction. Mitchell had nine catches for 123 yards in his first two appearances this year. If he’s able to return this week, he would at least earn a spot on the WR3/4 border versus the Dolphins.

Lamar Jackson (ankle) was not seen at the start of Wednesday’s practice.

Jackson will go down as a DNP when the Ravens drop their first official injury report of the week. He hasn’t practiced since suffering an ankle injury in Week 4. Head coach Jesse Minter insisted earlier this week that Jackson was making progress, but we doubt it’s enough to get him back on the field for Week 7. Tyler Huntley appears to be the favorite to start against the Bengals.

Breece Hall (quad) did not practice Wednesday.

Head coach Aaron Glenn noted that Hall’s status will be evaluated throughout the week. Hall hasn’t played since injuring his quad in Week 3. If the Jets expected him to miss four games, they likely would have placed him on injured reserve. On the other hand, Adonai Mitchell just missed four games with a hand injury and was not placed on IR, so the team seemingly doesn’t have a great read on their players’ health. Hall will likely miss Week 7. Braelon Allen, in turn, is in line for a high-end RB2 ranking versus a weak Dolphins defense.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports J.J. McCarthy will start in Week 7 against the Texans.

John Harbaugh is making the switch after a historic fourth quarter from “NINE”. McCarthy threw for 243 yards and a score in 11 minutes of action as the Giants mounted a frantic comeback against the Saints. Though he came up short in the end, McCarthy gave the Giants’ offense life after three dreadful quarters from James Winston. Now he’ll get the first snap versus a Houston defense that has been surprisingly ineffective this year. McCarthy is a high-risk QB2 for his first start as a Giant. He should at least be added in all Superflex formats.

Browns head coach Todd Monken said he’s “optimistic” Quinshon Judkins (ankle) will play in Week 7 against the Titans.

Monken sounded like Judkins and Dylan Sampson will be active and ready to go against Tennessee. Judkins had been the locked-in lead back for Cleveland before his Week 5 ankle injury, seeing 71 percent of the team’s designed rushing attempts. The potential return of Sampson, a good pass catcher, could complicate things for Judkins’ involvement in the pass game going forward. Judkins will be a touchdown-dependent flex play against a Titans defense allowing the NFL’s ninth lowest rushing success rate in 2026.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes Vita Vea could be traded before the NFL’s trade deadline.

With the Bucs’ 2026 season circling the drain, Vea, 31, could be dealt in the coming weeks to a contending team looking to beef up their defensive line for a second half run to the postseason. In coming to a contract compromise with Vea before the regular season, the Bucs “didn’t act as if he was part of their long-term future, and if teams come looking for a big, run-stuffing defensive tackle, Tampa would be silly not to listen,” Graziano said. Vea through Week 6 has a 17 percent pass rush win rate, which ranks 15th among defensive tackles.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Christian Kirk is a “possibility” for Week 7.

Kirk has been on injured reserve with a calf injury but could return to the Niners’ injury-ravaged receivers room this Sunday against the pass-funnel Falcons defense. “He had two good practices (last week). It was just his first two practices of the year,” Shanahan said of Kirk, who last year had 239 yards and a touchdown in 13 regular season games for the Texans. “We were down on wideouts, so it was still something we discussed, but we decided to give it another week.” If Kirk returns and plays something close to a full complement of snaps against Atlanta, he could function as the team’s No. 1 receiver with Mike Evans (Achilles) seemingly unlikely to suit up. Kirk should be rostered in most 12-team leagues and all deeper formats.
