T.J. Hockenson goes 3/29 in win over Bears

T.J. Hockenson caught 3-of-4 targets for 29 yards in the Vikings’ Week 2 win over the Bears.

Hockenson more or less repeated his Week 1 statline, only this time on far less passing volume for the Vikings’ offense. Carson Wentz attempted just 20 throws as the Vikes went “survive and advance” mode in weather-addled Chicago. With Kyler Murray expected to return from his concussion in Week 3 in Tampa, perhaps Hockenson can post a higher-end TE2 statline.

Hockenson was slammed into the ground on his first catch of the day. He got up slowly and was immediately checked out by the medical staff. Hockenson was eventually evaluated for a concussion and ruled out. With a bye week on deck for Week 6, Hockenson should be able to return for the team’s next game.
  • MIN Tight End #87
With just over two minutes left in the game, Hockenson took a knee at the Dolphins’ five-yard line, allowing Kyler Murray to seal the game with a trio of kneel-downs after that. Although Hockenson surrendered the touchdown, he still delivered a TE1-worthy stat line on the day. The veteran tight end served as Murray’s go-to receiver, regularly nabbing passes on short-to-intermediate slants and curls. Hockenson mostly dove forward for a couple of extra yards after catching passes, but he did manage to drag a defender on a 14-yard gain early in the fourth quarter. The Dolphins’ pass rush was very effective today, and Murray seemed to hone in on Hockenson as his primary pressure fix as the game progressed. Hockenson will be a borderline TE1/2 against the Saints in Week 5.
  • MIN Tight End #87
Running a route on 29 of the team’s 37 drop backs, Hockenson was uninvolved in the offense even after Justin Jefferson exited the game with an ankle injury in the first half. Hockenson, who has nine grabs over the Vikings’ first three games, profiles as a low-floor weekly option in a Minnesota offense that has not passed at its usual volume early in the season.
  • MIN Tight End #87
Hockenson finished second on the team in targets, though his 17 percent target share isn’t much to write home about. He found paydirt late in the third quarter on a red zone strike from Carson Wentz over the middle of the field. Wentz was filling in for a concussed Kyler Murray, who will likely miss Week 2. Hockenson is more of a TE2 than a true TE1, but his strong Week 1 outing at least puts him on the border versus the Bears next week.
  • MIN Tight End #87
The move saves $5 million against the cap for the Vikings in 2026, a franchise that is now scrambling to get under the salary cap following numerous high profile moves made the year prior. Hockenson is coming off the worst statistical season of his career following a devastating knee injury suffered in 2024. Now two years removed from the injury and playing with something to prove, the fantasy needle could be pointing up should he find more consistent quarterback play moving forward.
  • MIN Tight End #87
With Jordan Addison taking a major leap in 2024, Hockenson has slid into an uninteresting low-end TE1 stab over the past two years, generating 41/455/0 in 2024 and 51/438/3 in 2025. Cutting Hockenson would free up over $8.9 million in cap space for a team that’s currently up against it to get cap-compliant and The Athletic’s Alec Lewis pointed to Hockenson as one contract that could be reworked this offseason. His future with the Vikings is in some question entering 2026.
  • MIN Tight End #87
Hockenson sat out in Week 17 against the Lions and he appears likely to sit out this week as well. Hockenson’s backup, TE Josh Oliver, should not be in re-draft lineups against the Packers even if Hockenson cannot play this week.
  • MIN Tight End #87
Hockenson missed Week 17 with the shoulder issue and looks likely to sit out of Minnesota’s season finale. Josh Oliver and Ben Sims each caught exactly one pass in his absence last week. There isn’t a fantasy tight end of note on the team if Hockenson is out for Week 18.
  • MIN Tight End #87
Hockenson got banged up versus the Giants last week and was unable to practice once before being ruled out for Week 17. With one week left to go, it’s possible his season is over. Max Brosmer is under center for the Vikings this week. We don’t expect him to make any of the Vikings’ backup tight ends relevant for fantasy purposes tomorrow.
  • MIN Tight End #87
You don’t need to wait for the rule out on Wednesday — with Max Brosmer under center, it’s a run-don’t-walk to the waiver wire to replace Hockenson in your Week 17 lineup. If you somehow made it to the championship with Hockenson in your lineup, we’re impressed.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Commanders owner Josh Harris “would love” for Dan Quinn to remain the team’s head coach.

Garafolo says this as if Harris is simply a bystander watching Quinn bumble his way through another season. Garafolo did add that “anything is on the table” if the Commanders get blown out by the 49ers on national television on Monday. They are currently 7.5-point underdogs on most sportsbooks. With a bye week on deck after San Francisco, the Commanders could see Week 7 as the best time to pull the plug on Quinn.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that “no change is imminent” at head coach for the Saints.

Saints owner Gayle Benson said earlier this week that the team’s 1-4 record is “not acceptable.” Rapoport noted that she came to practice in a “show of support” for Moore and company, though it felt equally like a show of force from the outside. Rapsheet also stressed several times that the team needs to start winning games. While a change at head coach might not happen next week, it does sound like Moore won’t survive the season if things don’t turn around soon.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Najee Harris is “set to start” for the Giants in Week 6 against the Saints.

Fowler was adding to a report from Jordan Raanan, who said Harris is “likely to have a larger role with Cam Skattebo downgraded but still part of the mix after the fumbles.” Skattebo has indeed struggled with fumbles, putting the ball on the ground four times this year. No running back has more fumbles, and Skattebo’s most recent blunder cost the Giants a shot at an overtime win versus the Commanders last week. They instead settled for a tie. Even if Skattebo winds up leading the team in carries this week, he was only valuable for fantasy managers because of his high-volume role. With that out the window, Skattebo is buried in the RB3 ranks for Week 6.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Rico Dowdle (toe) is expected to play in Week 6 against the Bucs.

Dowdle has been out since Week 2 because of the toe issue. In the meantime, Jaylen Warren has looked like one of the league’s most dynamic backs on the ground and through the air. While his gargantuan workload will return to normal with Dowdle back, Warren should still operate as the team’s unquestioned RB1. Dowdle is just a mid-range FLEX play for his first game back.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler Jr. (ankle) is expected to play in Week 6 against the Packers.

JPJ was downgraded to a limited participant in Friday before being hit with the questionable tag, causing some concern about his Week 6 availability. It looks like the light practice session may have been a precaution. The newly-minted Cowboys should be good to go versus Green Bay.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Tyler Warren (groin) is a game-time decisions for Week 6 against the Titans.

Warren suffered the groin injury during Friday’s practice. He was added to the injury report and listed as questionable for Week 6. Of note, Warren also dealt with a groin injury late in training camp, though he was ready to go for Week 1 and had not appeared on the injury report again until this week. Even if he does suit up, Warren will be at far less than 100 percent. Expect Josh Downs and Keenan Allen to take on more work whether or not Warren is active.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Tyler Shough has two broken bones in his non-throwing hand.

Both Shough and Kellen Moore have given non-answers when asked about the quarterback’s left hand. Per Schefter, the injury could take a couple of months to heal, but it will not cost him any playing time. Shough injured his hand versus the Falcons in Week 4 and wore a protective glove in Week 5. He is coming off his two worst games of the year, though we don’t suspect the hand is to blame. Things get much easier this week with the Giants on tap. Shough will get another shot at a QB1 finish in Week 6.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Joe Alt (neck) is expected to “ramp up” this week.

Pre Rapoport, Alt received good news after seeing a specialist for his neck injury earlier this week. Alt missed last week’s game with the issue and has already been ruled out for Week 6, but this is still a positive turn of events, all things considered. With a Week 7 bye on deck, Alt could be back as soon as the following week when the Bolts take on the Rams.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Steelers are “optimistic” Pat Freiermuth (calf) will play in Week 6 against the Bucs.

Freiermuth was added to the injury report on Saturday. The team listed him as questionable for Week 6. A last-minute addition to the injury report is never a good sign, so we wouldn’t be surprised if his snaps are limited even if he is active. On the other hand, with Roman Wilson and Michael Pittman out, the Steelers may have no choice but to play a banged-up Muth more than expected. He will be a high-risk TE2 if active.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Kenyon Sadiq (concussion) is expected to play in Week 6 against the Patriots.

Sadiq left Week 5 with a concussion. He was upgraded to a full practice on Friday and seemingly cleared the league’s concussion protocol over the weekend. With Mason Taylor and Omar Cooper Jr. back for Week 6, there will likely be fewer targets to go around in a Jets offense that has regressed heavily over the past two weeks. Sadiq is a low-end TE2 for his date with New England.
