Schefty: Nick Bosa (calf) to miss ‘a few weeks’

Bosa strained his calf while going through his pre-practice warm-up routine on Thursday. The team has not yet identified Bosa’s expected return timeline, but the 49ers’ pass rusher will be out for some time. The 49ers also ruled out EDGE Romello Height (hand) for Week 3 against the Cardinals as well.

McCaffrey and Williams were listed as DNP simply for rest, while Bosa had a rest/knee designation and Greenlaw had a rest/Achilles designation. This is notable as the 49ers have several key veterans who have dealt with injuries throughout their career and practice reps will be managed for these players, especially coming off a Week 1 in Australia. McCaffrey reportedly dealt with cramps in the 49ers’ Week 1 win over the Rams; though he is not injured, his experiences with Achilles tendinitis will certainly lend to rest days throughout the season. We expect the 49ers to continue to rest veterans in practice throughout the season in an effort to remain healthy.

During a media sessions late Monday, Morris was asked if Bosa would be able to go in Week 1 against the Rams, to which he responded, “Oh, he’s going out there. He’s going.” There’s no room left for interpretation about that quote, meaning Bosa is expected to make his return to the field after tearing his ACL in Week 3 of the 2025 season. Don’t expect a normal allotment of snaps in his first game in almost a calendar year, but the veteran pass-rusher can still make a significant impact when on the field. IDP managers will want to confirm his status on the team’s injury report Tuesday before making plans to insert him into Week 1 lineups.

Bosa suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 last year and is still working his way back. He was back on the practice field today and is on track to play in Australia versus the Rams next week. Bosa got off to a hot start last year, logging a sack in each of his first two games before exiting Week 3 a few snaps in. If he can return to form quickly, the 49ers defense should take a step forward this year.

Shanahan noted that the tendinitis that has been bothering Bosa has been “subsiding” over the past few days. The 28-year-old defender missed Tuesday’s scrimmage against the Chargers, but it sounds like he should be back in action in a relative short time.

“Pretty normal thing with ACLs,” said Kyle Shanahan. We’re not concerned about Bosa’s status for Week 1 yet, but we’d like to see him practicing.

Barrows notes that Bosa will “likely get ramped up in practice over the next two weeks or so.” It doesn’t sound like he’s expected to be a full go just yet, but it’s always a good sign for a player coming off an ACL tear in the previous season when he avoids the PUP list to start camp. Bosa totaled two sacks and nine tackles in just three games last season, but had totaled nine or more sacks in each of his previous four seasons. Still only 28 years old, Bosa should have plenty to offer the Niners’ defense once he’s back in full and getting after the quarterback.

Williams suffered a torn ACL in Week 9 last season and was seen doing resistance bands workouts at the team’s facilities last month. The second-year pass rusher totaled 11 tackles, four TFLs, and one sack in his rookie season before going down, and is one of a handful of players the Niners are hoping to have back on the defensive side of the ball. Veteran pass rusher Nick Bosa (knee), who also suffered a torn ACL last season, is also working his way back to the field and said he is “pretty far along” in his recovery. If either player is unable to go by the start of camp, they will likely be added to the PUP list with a chance to be activated when they clear all medical and conditioning tests.

Bosa has been rehabbing this offseason after tearing his ACL early in November. He said he is “far along” in the recovery process and should be good to go for the 2026 season. Bosa tore his right ACL in high school and his left ACL in 2020. Although having experience in this department is less than ideal, Bosa said his prior experiences have helped him during this rehab process.

Fellow EDGE Nick Bosa (also knee, also ACL), who suffered his injury six weeks earlier, is expected back for Week 1. It sounds like Williams is in more doubt. Based on that, it’s certainly possible the second-year EDGE player starts training camp on the PUP list. 49ers beats saw Williams doing side-to-side movements and working with resistance bands at rookie minicamp, so he’s certainly active, but he still has several hurdles to clear in his rehab before a return is on the table.
