Lions activated C Cade Mays’ (wrist) 21-day practice window.

This is a big deal for fantasy purposes. The Lions signed Mays to a three-year, $25 million contract this offseason, shoring up their center position with a reliable prime-age starter. Mays injured his wrist early in August, so he has not yet taken the field on game day with his new team. The Lions’ permissive defense continues to put the offense into pass-heavy game scripts. Getting Mays back on the field will fortify Jared Goff’s protection. He was limited on Wednesday.

Mays and S Brian Branch (Achilles) are not yet ready to return from their injuries. Starting CB Rock Ya-Sin (hamstring) has been ruled out as well, and DL Tyleik Williams (foot) is questionable to play.
  • DET Defensive Back #32
Branch ruptured an Achilles tendon in Week 14 last year. He is still recovering. The Lions also placed C Cade Mays (wrist) on the injured reserve/designated for return list due to his summer injury. Both players will be eligible to return after missing four games.

The Lions sought to upgrade at center this offseason and went out and signed Mays to a three-year, $25 million contract. Now, the 27-year-old lineman is expected to be sidelined for the next 8-10 weeks after fracturing a small bone in his wrist, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Campbell said that the injury is not believed to be season-ending, but it’s still a major blow to the offensive line. Former second-round pick Juice Scruggs came over in the David Montgomery trade and has played center before, so he will presumably get the first crack at taking over in Mays’ absence.
  • DET Center #64
A boost for Jahmyr Gibbs! Mays is a huge power-blocking 6-foot-6, 325-pound center and should help solidify a troubled interior line for the Lions. It allows them to leave Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge at guard and makes Juice Scruggs a depth piece.
  • CAR Guard #62
Zavala suffered the calf injury in Panthers’ Week 12 loss to the 49ers and starts out the week not practicing. Also out was C Cade Mays (ankle). Jake Curhan and Austin Corbett are in line to start for Zavala and Mays, respectively, if neither can play in Week 13.

Mays was a restricted free agent, and the Panthers chose to tender him at the original round level. As a former sixth-round pick, Mays was then allowed to look for an offer as a free agent. The Panthers could then match that offer or let him walk in exchange for a sixth-round pick from his new team. With no takers on the open market, Mays returns for a camp battle with Austin Corbett for the starting center job this summer.

Mays (6’5/311) was a top-25 overall recruit who started for two years at Georgia before transferring home to start his final two campaigns at Tennessee. Despite missing three games with a left foot injury in 2021, Mays earned second-team All-SEC honors for his work as the Vols’ right tackle. He has five-position versatility along with his four years of starting experience. Mays also impressed with a 75th-percentile relative athletic score during pre-draft testing. Mays’ play strength stands out on tape, both as a drive-blocker in the run game and when dropping the anchor in pass-pro. His biggest issue is a propensity to pop up and play high with a narrow base, gifting the leverage advantage to opponents while compromising his balance. Like Matt Slauson, Mays may need to iron out the kinks early in his career before entering a starting lineup.

Mays (6'6/325) has not officially opted out of the game or declared for the 2022 NFL Draft, but there is a chance that his missing the game could be draft related. This season, Mays has started 10 games for the Vols at right tackle, and received a Pro Football Focus grade of 73.4. As a pass blocker, Mays allowed five quarterback pressures and one sack on 272 passing plays.

Kentucky HC Mark Stoops said on Monday that conference presidents will vote on whether or not to change the conference’s policy on transfers within the SEC.
At present time the Southeastern Conference requires football players that transfer from one member school to another sit out a season, even if the NCAA grants the athlete immediate eligibility. That rule has proven problematic for both Kentucky QB Joey Gatewood and Tennessee OL Cade Mays, who transferred to their current schools from Auburn and Georgia, respectively. Stoops said during his media availability that there’s a chance the rule gets changed and applied this season, which would grant players such as Gatewood and Mays the right to play immediately.

Mays (6'6/328) was originally denied an eligibility waiver in August, but fortunately the NCAA has come around and granted his waiver on appeal. Mays now must wait for the SEC to clear him since nothing can be accomplished succinctly when it comes to college football bureaucracy. Mays, a former five-star recruit, started 18 games during his two seasons at Georgia and will immediately assume starting duties at Tennessee if his SEC eligibility is granted. The Vols look forward to having Mays in the lineup September 26th when they open at South Carolina.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports Will Campbell avoided a major knee injury in Week 5.

Campbell went down with what looked like a serious injury in the first half of New England’s win over the Raiders. He did not return to action. Campbell, per Pelissero, will be “week to week” headed into Week 6. The Patriots will likely be without him this weekend against the Jets.

    Rams waived K Harrison Mevis.

Mevis, I told you six times before, you don’t work here no more. The Thiccer Kicker hit 12-of-13 for the Rams after coming in late last season and 39-of-39 extra points. He doesn’t quite have the distance of some of the league’s best kickers, but we expect him to continue to get chances at 24.

Rams signed K Blake Grupe off the Jets practice squad.

Going 5-for-9 on the season will get you replaced in the modern NFL, as Thiccer Kicker Harrison Mevis is learning. It’s not totally fair, one of those was blocked, but clearly the Rams were not happy with how things were trending. Grupe is a worthwhile pickup in leagues that still use kickers. He went 11-for-11 for the Colts last year after being released by the Saints at midseason.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said the Chargers would not consider trading Justin Herbert.

Schefter reached out to the team after a league source told him the Chargers could get upwards of three first-round draft picks in exchange for Herbert. The Chargers source told Schefter the team has “never” discussed the idea of dealing Herbert, even as the Chargers start the season 0-5 and rank near the bottom in almost every offensive category. It would seem unlikely that the Chargers would consider trading Herbert even if they go all in on a rebuild following the 2026 season. Herbert, 28, who ranks 33rd out of 34 qualifying quarterbacks in EPA per drop back this year, is signed through the 2029 season.

Bengals TE Tanner Hudson (pec) is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Hudson tore his pec in Week 5’s win over the Dolphins. The injury will likely keep him sidelined for the remainder of the regular season. Hudson had played 28 percent of the team’s offensive snaps and seen seven targets through five games, mostly functioning as a blocker. Drew Sample would see more snaps with Hudson sidelined.

The Athletic’s Matt Barrows believes Brandin Cooks is the “next man up” in the 49ers receivers room.

With Deebo Samuel sustaining a serious hamstring injury in Week 5 against Seattle, Cooks stepped in and functioned as San Francisco’s No. 2 receiver behind Mike Evans. Cooks was targeted on 17 percent of his pass routes against the Seahawks and caught a touchdown on his only reception. Though Jacob Cowing could mix in with Samuel sidelined, Cooks should be in line for a few targets a game. The well-traveled veteran can be picked up in deeper fantasy formats this week.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports TreVeyon Henderson (ankle) will miss multiple weeks.

Henderson suffered his latest ankle injury in Week 5 against the Raiders. Schefter said Henderson is “regarded as a quick healer, so the Patriots are hoping his return is sooner rather than later.” Still, he could be sidelined for the next few weeks, leaving Rhamondre Stevenson as the team’s clear lead back. Corey Kiner, meanwhile, appears to be in line as the Patriots’ RB2 after seeing seven touches last week against the Raiders. Kiner should be stashed in most 12-team fantasy leagues for now. Stevenson profiles as a top-12 play until Henderson returns.

Jaguars OL Anton Harrison will undergo knee surgery and will miss at least 3-5 weeks.

Harrison, who sustained the injury in Week 5 against the Eagles, could miss the rest of the season once doctors determine the severity of his knee injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Harrison had protected Trevor Lawrence’s blindside before the injury. His absence could be a problem for a Jacksonville offensive line that has the league’s third worst pass blocking win rate.

Davante Adams caught 5-of-7 targets for 51 yards and two touchdowns in the Rams’ Week 5 loss to the Bills.

Adams cashed in on a corner fade from four yards out in the second quarter and ran a beautiful route on a double move slant from five yards out for his second score in the fourth quarter, proving that he remains an elite red zone weapon for an offense that has now attempted 51 or more passes in three straight games. Adams is back to modest target rates following the Week 4 return of Puka Nacua but remains a weekly WR2 due to his red zone acumen, which remains true ahead of a much more forgiving matchup against the Cardinals in Week 6.

Tyler Higbee caught 5-of-6 targets for 83 yards in the Rams’ Week 5 loss to the Bills.

Higbee continued to operate as the primary pass-catching tight end against the Bills, something that must please fantasy managers considering Colby Parkinson returned from a one-game absence. Furthermore, the team carried only three tight ends on the active game-day roster after being at either four or five through the first month of the 2026 season. Higbee is a middling TE2 in fantasy circles ahead of a juicy matchup against the divisional rival Cardinals in Week 6.
