Marcus Mariota (knee) did not practice Wednesday.

Mariota is dealing with an MCL sprain. He went down early in Week 4 and did not return. Luckily for the Commanders, Jayden Daniels appears ready to return to the lineup. Barring a setback, he will start in Week 5 against the Giants. Athan Kaliakmanis will serve as his backup.

Mariota’s absence leaves QB3 Athan Kaliakmanis as the team’s top backup behind Jayden Daniels, who is returning from his Week 2 elbow dislocation. Mariota does not need to be rostered in 12-team superflex leagues.
  • WAS Quarterback #8
The Commanders were forced to go to rookie seventh-rounder Athan Kaliakmanis after Mariota went down in yesterday’s game. Mariota sprained the MCL in the same knee during the preseason, and it would be surprising if Mariota was cleared in time for Week 5’s game against the Giants. If he’s unable to play, Kaliakmanis could make his first career start if Jayden Daniels (elbows) isn’t ready to return. Daniels traveled with the team to London for last week’s game and was limited in all three practices. He seemed close to playing against the Colts, and with the Commanders sitting at 1-3 and their season potentially on the line, it wouldn’t be surprising if he did suit up in a pivotal divisional matchup against the Giants.
  • WAS Quarterback #8
Per head coach Dan Quinn, Mariota re-injured the MCL in his right knee. He initially suffered the MCL injury during the preseason. The fact that he suffered a setback almost two months after the initial injury suggests this could be a long-term absence. It will be seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis for the rest of this game. The hope is that Jayden Daniels will be back for Week 5.

Colts EDGE Laiatu Latu landed on Mariota’s right ankle while taking him down for a sack in the first quarter. Mariota was slow to get up and immediately made his way to the blue tent. He walked to the locker room after a brief stay in the tent. Seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis is under center for the Commanders.
  • WAS Quarterback #8
Jayden Daniels felt like a long shot to play despite traveling with the team to London and logging back-to-back limited practices to start the week. Now, Quinn has confirmed that Mariota will get at least one more start before Daniels possibly returns in Week 5 to face the Giants. Mariota led the Commanders to an upset win over the Seahawks in Week 3, throwing for 183 yards and three touchdowns, and now faces a Colts defense that was torched in Weeks 1 and 2 by Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes. While we shouldn’t expect Mariota to put up numbers like Jackson and Mahomes, he will be firmly on the streaming radar in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

Daniels was limited in practice on Wednesday and was on the practice field again today, presumably for another limited session. He isn’t expected to play this week, but any amount of practice this soon is a good sign. He told reporters he won’t make a final decision on surgery until after the season. He is, however, at least holding off until the offseason. Marcus Mariota will almost certainly start again this week. Daniels will then have a chance to return in Week 5 against the Giants.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
It looks like Daniels will log some practice time ahead of the Commanders’ Week 4 London matchup against the Colts, less than two weeks after suffering yet another elbow injury. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Tuesday that Daniels will likely require surgery on the elbow after the season. That raises questions about whether he can return and play as he usually does in the coming months. For now it looks like Marcus Mariota will get a second straight start for Washington. He’ll be usable in superflex formats against a middling Colts coverage unit.
  • WAS Quarterback #8
Just like we all predicted. Mariota was mostly dinking and dunking — particularly in the first half — but he was able to make plays in the red zone, and found Terry McLaurin for a 30-yard touchdown in the second quarter. There wasn’t much scrambling — the Seahawks simply didn’t pressure him that often. He did briefly leave the field with what appeared to be a leg issue, but he was able to return without missing a snap. Mariota will try and back this up against the Colts in Week 4, with that game taking place in London.

Frankly, this report comes off as more of a recap than breaking news. The Commanders do not yet know when Daniels will return, though they are optimistic that he will miss fewer than four games. According to Rapoport, the goal is to get him back “as soon as possible” and “as safe as possible.” Backup QB
    Marcus Mariota

    will start in his stead.

Peters clarified that this is the plan for Daniels right now, adding that he only recently returned to the team after meeting with several experts. That said, when considering that a stint on the IR would require Daniels to miss at least four games, it would be safe to assume that the team is hoping for a speedy recovery that wouldn’t require him to miss more than three games, putting him on a week-to-week timetable to return. Daniels has already been ruled out for Week 3’s game against the Seahawks and could also be a long shot to play in Week 4’s game against the Colts in London. Daniels will likely wear a brace for the remainder of the season in hopes of stabilizing his elbow, which he first dislocated last season in Week 9. Marcus Mariota will draw the start this week and threw for 1,695-10-7 in 11 games last season.

Bears coach Ben Johnson said Dayo Odeyingbo (quad) will miss Week 6 against the Falcons but will not be placed on injured reserve.

It’s overall a good update for Odeyingbo, even if the veteran defensive end will miss at least one week. The fact that IR was even mentioned does suggest it could be a multi-week absence for him. Odeyingbo has three sacks and two pass breakups this year.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Talanoa Hufanga is expected to miss “about 2-3 weeks” with an ankle injury.

The former second-team All-Pro safety left last week’s game against the Chargers with the injury. Hufanga has been one of the biggest havoc creators in the league this year with one forced fumble and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. His absence will be a big blow to the Broncos’ defense, which is already without Patrick Surtain II, Jonathon Cooper, and potentially Riley Moss for their Week 6 matchup against the Seahawks.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn said Adonai Mitchell underwent a “small procedure” on his hand.

Per Glenn, Mitchell remains week to week. This explains the lengthy absence for Mitchell, who hasn’t played since injuring his finger in practice ahead of Week 3. According to Glenn, Mitchell is moving his fingers around well, which is hopefully a sign that he will be back soon. With Omar Cooper Jr.'s practice window now open, Mitchell could return to a rather crowded receiver room once he is healthy.

Lamar Jackson (ankle) was not present at the start of Wednesday’s practice.

Jackson could always return for the portion of practice not open to the media, but this is still a concerning start to the week for the superstar quarterback. Jackson missed Week 5 with the ankle injury after failing to practice once during the week. If he remains sidelined for Week 6, Tyler Huntley will make his second start of the year. Huntley acquitted himself well on Sunday night with 201 yards and two touchdowns through the air, plus a score on the ground, in Baltimore’s overtime win over the Falcons. He will be a solid QB2 for Superflex players if Jackson is out again this week.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles said Baker Mayfield (thumb) has not resumed throwing yet.

Mayfield did not practice today and is a safe bet to miss Week 6 as he continues to work his way back from the dislocated thumb he suffered in Week 3. The fact that he can’t even throw a football right now, let alone participate in practice, suggests Mayfield could be out beyond just Week 6. Jalon Daniels will start on Sunday versus the Steelers. Daniels has been held well under 200 passing yards in both of his starts, but he does at least have 78 rushing yards in those contests. His output as a runner will keep him in the QB2 mix for Week 6.

Rashee Rice (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday.

Rice appeared to have a good chance at suiting up for Week 6 when Andy Reid spoke about it after Week 4’s win over the Raiders. Reid only said he “tweaked” his hammy. Even with a bye week to rest, it looks like Rice is now on the wrong side of questionable for Week 6. With Tyquan Thornton on IR, Xavier Worthy may be tasked with WR1 duties this week. He totaled four catches for 70 yards in his last outing and would be a solid FLEX play versus the Chargers if Rice can’t go.

Patriots designated A.J. Brown (ankle) to return from injured reserve.

Brown will return to practice today, likely for a limited session. The team now has 21 days to officially activate him from IR. That could happen later this week, which would mean he’s ready to suit up for Week 6 against the Jets. He would likely be on some sort of pitch count in his first game back, but even a limited AJB would be worthy of a spot in the WR2 ranks.

Jets opened the 21-day practice window for Omar Cooper (ankle).

Cooper has been on injured reserve since sustaining a high ankle sprain in Week 1. He could return as soon as this week against the Patriots, though he could see his snaps and routes limited. Cooper can be rostered in deeper 12-team formats. Garrett Wilson’s domination of the New York passing offense makes it tough for anyone else to post fantasy-relevant numbers for now.

Kenyon Sadiq remains in the league’s concussion protocol.

Sadiq suffered the head injury in Week 5 against Cleveland and did not return to action. Mason Taylor led the team’s tight ends with a 59 percent routes rate against the Browns, catching all three of his targets for 23 yards. If Sadiq remains in the protocol tomorrow, he would be a long shot to play in Week 6. Taylor in that case would be a desperation streaming option in 12-team leagues.

Titans head coach Robert Saleh said he had a “cool conversation” with Cam Ward.

Ward’s head, per Saleh, is in a “good place” ahead of the Titans’ Week 6 game against the Colts. Ward has been dreadful through five weeks, ranking 24th in EPA per drop back and 27th in drop back success rate. Only five quarterbacks have a lower adjusted yards per attempt than Ward this season. Daniel Jones and Tyson Bagent are the only QBs who average fewer fantasy points per drop back. Saleh has defended his second-year QB at every turn and does not seem close to benching him in favor of journeyman backup Mitchell Trubisky.
