ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports J.J. McCarthy will start in Week 7 against the Texans.

John Harbaugh is making the switch after a historic fourth quarter from “NINE”. McCarthy threw for 243 yards and a score in 11 minutes of action as the Giants mounted a frantic comeback against the Saints. Though he came up short in the end, McCarthy gave the Giants’ offense life after three dreadful quarters from James Winston. Now he’ll get the first snap versus a Houston defense that has been surprisingly ineffective this year. McCarthy is a high-risk QB2 for his first start as a Giant. He should at least be added in all Superflex formats.

Nine threatened a really good box score, crossing 200 yards by the third quarter, but both the Texans (playing more aggressive coverage) and the Giants (using Jameis Winston in short-yardage situations) conspired to keep McCarthy scoreless. Still, it was a nice debut start. McCarthy took three sacks but had zero turnovers while managing a handful of nice throws. The Giants head on bye in Week 8, but McCarthy has played like he could be a reasonable superflex QB2 against the Eagles in a few weeks.

The Giants pivoted to “NINE” after he lit up the Saints for 243 yards in the fourth quarter of Week 6. Having already spent some draft capital to acquire McCarthy, the team is going to give him an extended tryout as the starter. If he does well, the Giants will likely hang on to him as Jaxson Dart’s backup next year. They could also trade him in the offseason if he plays well to garner interest from other teams.

According to Hughes, “this is the player they targeted and wanted” as their quarterback the minute Jaxson Dart (knee) got hurt. Hughes acknowledges that coach John Harbaugh could eventually bench McCarthy later in the year, but it will take more than a bad “game or two” for that to happen. In the meantime, the weekly fantasy football outlooks for Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely are more volatile than they were with Jameis Winston at the helm. Selling high could make sense. Hughes adds that McCarthy would have to play like a top-10 quarterback to make the coaching staff consider him for the starting role next season. That outcome seems highly unlikely.

The fact that he has to think about it probably tips the hand that it will be J.J. McCarthy sooner or later — if not outright now. Jameis Winston was replaced by McCarthy in the fourth quarter yesterday and McCarthy showcased his deep arm and almost erased a large deficit by throwing for 243 yards on 21 attempts. If McCarthy did start against the Texans, he would likely be a bottom five superflex option on the Week 7 slate because of his established history as a starter.

It’s the exact kind of answer we would expect from a coach who is just minutes removed from his team nearly completing a comeback victory. J.J. McCarthy stepped in for Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter and lit up the Saints for 243 yards and one touchdown in the fourth quarter, leading the Giants on three scoring drives and 17 unanswered points in a game that the Saints won 34-27. Whether it’s in Week 7 or a point later in the season, McCarthy feels like a lock to start multiple games for the Giants, who now sit at 3-2-1 on the season. The Jameis Winston Experience, while fun, is often short-lived, and his underwhelming performance on Sunday against the Saints (152-1-2) comes a week after Winston struggled for the entire first half against the Commanders before he turned it on in the second half. Harbaugh will likely announce his Week 7 starter in the coming days, but it wouldn’t be surprising to learn the team is handing McCarthy the keys for the remainder of the season.

McCarthy’s first play of the game was a read-option where he kept the ball and rushed for a loss of two yards in the red zone. With the Giants down 24 points in the fourth quarter, McCarthy replaced a struggling Jameis Winston and started throwing several deep targets downfield. He threw an interception his first drive but led multiple successful drives late in the fourth quarter. Charlie Jones corralled a 49-yard pass away from a defender, making a near-interception into a long completion for McCarthy. Martin Emerson dropped an interception later in the drive before McCarthy connected with Isaiah Likely for a touchdown. He wound up leading the Giants in passing and rushing through just one quarter of play. Averaging 11.6 yards per attempt, McCarthy was one play away from leading a comeback against the Saints. Instead, we will wait to see if John Harbaugh will name the 23-year-old the starter for Week 7 against the Texans; he would be a fantasy QB2 if he starts.

Who is asking for this? McCarthy was on the field for three plays in Week 5. They gained three yards, two of which came from McCarthy on a pair of rush attempts. After flaming out as a traditional quarterback in Minnesota, McCarthy is working his way toward becoming the next Taysom Hill. Jameis Winston remains the starter, but Harbaugh will use McCarthy as a change-of-pace option a few times each week. He could also take over as the starter if Winston struggles for an extended period of time, though we appear to be at least a few weeks away from that being a consideration.

This is the second-straight week that Singletary has been made a healthy scratch for the Giants. Najee Harris and Tyrone Tracy will serve as the backups to Cam Skattebo. It’s also worth noting that QB J.J. McCarthy, who was acquired from the Vikings earlier this week, is active for Week 4.

Everyone but Harbaugh knew Dart wasn’t returning for the playoffs the moment his meniscus repair procedure was announced. Harbaugh, meanwhile, held out hope that his starting quarterback could return in time for a deep playoff run. Even he isn’t keeping that facade up anymore, though he noted that Dart’s surgery “went well.” Coming off an ugly win, Jameis Winston will make his second start of the year in Week 4. J.J. McCarthy will get a crack at the job when the Giants inevitably start losing.

New York acquired McCarthy from the Vikings on Monday in exchange for a 2027 fifth round draft pick. Hughes spoke with NFL sources who said “the Giants do not give up a fifth-round pick unless they plan to play McCarthy in the near future.” Head coach John Harbaugh and the team’s coaching staff, per Hughes, see McCarthy as a starting-caliber quarterback despite his immense struggles in Minnesota last season. “The Giants welcomed the chance to add a player they view as a competitor, gritty, mobile, and who has all the tools to be a plus passer in the NFL,” Hughes said. With Jameis Winston playing worse than any QB in recent memory, McCarthy could be just a couple weeks away from taking over as New York’s starter. He would be a mild upgrade for Malik Nabers and the rest of the Giants pass catchers.

Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) was not spotted at Chicago’s Tuesday practice.

The Bears elected to have a practice Tuesday, as they prepare for a MNF matchup with the Seahawks, so they won’t have an injury report until Thursday. This isn’t exactly a strong sign that Monangai won’t make it back this week, but it also isn’t good news for managers that would like to see him active.

Elijah Mitchell rushed three times for 11 yards in Philadelphia’s Week 7 loss to the Cowboys, adding three receptions for 23 yards on four targets.

With both Saquon Barkley (back) and Dameon Pierce (undisclosed) shuttling off in the fourth quarter, it was practice squad elevation Mitchell helping to close out a loss to the Cowboys. It’s certainly possible that Mitchell will be involved in whatever happens next week given the two injuries ahead of him, making him an interesting waiver wire thought.

The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reports Isaiah Likely (undisclosed) expressed confidence that he’ll be fine after the bye week.

Likely was spotted limping at times during Week 7’s win over the Texans, which helps explain his subpar production. We’ll keep an eye on this one coming out of the bye, but we’re certainly not expecting anything serious here.

Giants signed RB Gregory Desrosiers off the Chargers’ practice squad.

The first-year UDFA rushed for 166 yards on 23 carries in the preseason for the Chargers, adding one touchdown and one eight-yard reception. We’d be surprised if he got real run in this backfield but at least he has the bye week to acclimate.

Giants GM Joe Schoen said the Giants will place Tyrone Tracy (hamstring) on injured reserve.

Well that sorts out the Giants backfield for the short term. Devin Singletary will take over as the primary passing down back behind Cam Skattebo and should be a usable FLEX play going forward. Tracy will miss the next four weeks after going down with the hamstring injury in the second quarter of New York’s win over the Texans in Week 7. Schoen indicated this isn’t a season-ender for Tracy.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Colts could trade Josh Downs.

Schefter listed out DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, and Downs as players that could potentially be on the move as the Colts continue what from all outside appearances looks to be a fire sale. He thinks Buckner will be the next player on the move and likely go for less than Quenton Nelson. Downs certainly hasn’t impressed with his opportunity this season, but he’s a valuable receiver and Indianapolis didn’t exactly but him in an ideal scenario with Alec Pierce hurt and Keenan Allen playing alongside him while Daniel Jones struggles to regain his 2025 form.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Colts ownership does not want to trade Jonathan Taylor.

Schefter said that if he had to guess today, he doesn’t think the Colts will part with Taylor. There are still a few weeks ahead of the trade deadline, and it’s certainly possible that a team bowls them over with an offer. This is going to remain a topic of conversation until the deadline passes. But it is worth noting that ownership believes in Taylor as a difference-maker.

Bears signed RB Zavier Scott to their active roster from the practice squad.

The Bears had run out of elevations with him, so had to sign him to the roster to have him active for Week 8. Scott has played 46 special teams snaps and 0 offensive snaps so far and does not need to be rostered for fantasy purposes. It’s hard to not read this as bad news about Kyle Monangai’s health in the short term, but we’re trying.

Bengals placed Erick All (knee) on injured reserve.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, this is believed to be a third torn ACL. Obviously it’s not good news that All, who missed a season-and-a-half the last time he damaged his knee, is dealing with another long-term knee injury. He’s in the third year of a four-year rookie contract but his NFL future looks to be in doubt.

49ers general manager John Lynch said the team would continue starting Eddy Pineiro after the team’s Week 7 bye.

Lynch in a Tuesday interview acknowledged Pineiro is “going through a rough patch” but committed to sticking with him for now. “We have a lot of belief in Eddie,” Lynch added. “He has had a tough run early this year, but we extended Eddie for his body of work with us but then throughout the history of his career.” Pineiro has missed three of his nine field goal tries on the season and four of his 25 extra point attempts. Pineiro, who made 96 percent of his field goal tries in 2025, will have at least a couple more games before the Niners brings in kicker competition.
