Giants GM Joe Schoen, asked about the future of the team’s quarterback position said: “To have two young guys with Jaxson and J.J., both talented players, it’s a good position to be in.”

In other words, it wasn’t exactly an endorsement that Jaxson Dart is the franchise quarterback. Dart, out for the year with a meniscus repair, will enter the third year of his rookie contract as the likely favorite to start assuming Nine hasn’t just blossomed into a great quarterback overnight. But it sounds like the Giants are at least open to the idea that McCarthy could alter the calculus here.

The FNIA crew laugh at Devin McCourty’s Halloween costume, as the former Patriots defensive back dressed up as his prior self for his son’s youth football game.

Nine threatened a really good box score, crossing 200 yards by the third quarter, but both the Texans (playing more aggressive coverage) and the Giants (using Jameis Winston in short-yardage situations) conspired to keep McCarthy scoreless. Still, it was a nice debut start. McCarthy took three sacks but had zero turnovers while managing a handful of nice throws. The Giants head on bye in Week 8, but McCarthy has played like he could be a reasonable superflex QB2 against the Eagles in a few weeks.

The Giants pivoted to “NINE” after he lit up the Saints for 243 yards in the fourth quarter of Week 6. Having already spent some draft capital to acquire McCarthy, the team is going to give him an extended tryout as the starter. If he does well, the Giants will likely hang on to him as Jaxson Dart’s backup next year. They could also trade him in the offseason if he plays well to garner interest from other teams.

According to Hughes, “this is the player they targeted and wanted” as their quarterback the minute Jaxson Dart (knee) got hurt. Hughes acknowledges that coach John Harbaugh could eventually bench McCarthy later in the year, but it will take more than a bad “game or two” for that to happen. In the meantime, the weekly fantasy football outlooks for Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely are more volatile than they were with Jameis Winston at the helm. Selling high could make sense. Hughes adds that McCarthy would have to play like a top-10 quarterback to make the coaching staff consider him for the starting role next season. That outcome seems highly unlikely.

John Harbaugh is making the switch after a historic fourth quarter from “NINE”. McCarthy threw for 243 yards and a score in 11 minutes of action as the Giants mounted a frantic comeback against the Saints. Though he came up short in the end, McCarthy gave the Giants’ offense life after three dreadful quarters from James Winston. Now he’ll get the first snap versus a Houston defense that has been surprisingly ineffective this year. McCarthy is a high-risk QB2 for his first start as a Giant. He should at least be added in all Superflex formats.

The fact that he has to think about it probably tips the hand that it will be J.J. McCarthy sooner or later — if not outright now. Jameis Winston was replaced by McCarthy in the fourth quarter yesterday and McCarthy showcased his deep arm and almost erased a large deficit by throwing for 243 yards on 21 attempts. If McCarthy did start against the Texans, he would likely be a bottom five superflex option on the Week 7 slate because of his established history as a starter.

It’s the exact kind of answer we would expect from a coach who is just minutes removed from his team nearly completing a comeback victory. J.J. McCarthy stepped in for Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter and lit up the Saints for 243 yards and one touchdown in the fourth quarter, leading the Giants on three scoring drives and 17 unanswered points in a game that the Saints won 34-27. Whether it’s in Week 7 or a point later in the season, McCarthy feels like a lock to start multiple games for the Giants, who now sit at 3-2-1 on the season. The Jameis Winston Experience, while fun, is often short-lived, and his underwhelming performance on Sunday against the Saints (152-1-2) comes a week after Winston struggled for the entire first half against the Commanders before he turned it on in the second half. Harbaugh will likely announce his Week 7 starter in the coming days, but it wouldn’t be surprising to learn the team is handing McCarthy the keys for the remainder of the season.

McCarthy’s first play of the game was a read-option where he kept the ball and rushed for a loss of two yards in the red zone. With the Giants down 24 points in the fourth quarter, McCarthy replaced a struggling Jameis Winston and started throwing several deep targets downfield. He threw an interception his first drive but led multiple successful drives late in the fourth quarter. Charlie Jones corralled a 49-yard pass away from a defender, making a near-interception into a long completion for McCarthy. Martin Emerson dropped an interception later in the drive before McCarthy connected with Isaiah Likely for a touchdown. He wound up leading the Giants in passing and rushing through just one quarter of play. Averaging 11.6 yards per attempt, McCarthy was one play away from leading a comeback against the Saints. Instead, we will wait to see if John Harbaugh will name the 23-year-old the starter for Week 7 against the Texans; he would be a fantasy QB2 if he starts.

Who is asking for this? McCarthy was on the field for three plays in Week 5. They gained three yards, two of which came from McCarthy on a pair of rush attempts. After flaming out as a traditional quarterback in Minnesota, McCarthy is working his way toward becoming the next Taysom Hill. Jameis Winston remains the starter, but Harbaugh will use McCarthy as a change-of-pace option a few times each week. He could also take over as the starter if Winston struggles for an extended period of time, though we appear to be at least a few weeks away from that being a consideration.

This is the second-straight week that Singletary has been made a healthy scratch for the Giants. Najee Harris and Tyrone Tracy will serve as the backups to Cam Skattebo. It’s also worth noting that QB J.J. McCarthy, who was acquired from the Vikings earlier this week, is active for Week 4.

Everyone but Harbaugh knew Dart wasn’t returning for the playoffs the moment his meniscus repair procedure was announced. Harbaugh, meanwhile, held out hope that his starting quarterback could return in time for a deep playoff run. Even he isn’t keeping that facade up anymore, though he noted that Dart’s surgery “went well.” Coming off an ugly win, Jameis Winston will make his second start of the year in Week 4. J.J. McCarthy will get a crack at the job when the Giants inevitably start losing.

Jonah Coleman rushed 11 times for 41 yards and a touchdown in the Broncos’ Week 8 win over the Chiefs, adding four catches for 63 yards.

Coleman out-carried Dobbins 11-7 and was the only Broncos running back to earn a target, of which he saw five. Most importantly, Coleman was on the field for goal line duties, and he cashed in with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Though he only averaged 3.7 yards per carry, Coleman was a handful for Chiefs defenders to bring down, routinely creating missed tackles while racking up yards after contact. Coleman’s best rep of the day was a 51-yard catch-and-run to set up his touchdown on the next play. Coleman saw all of the high-value touches in the backfield while leading the way in carries and targets. The takeover is all but complete, putting Coleman in the RB2 ranks for Week 9 against the Panthers.

Drake Maye completed 16-of-20 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns in the Patriots’ 24-19, Week 8 win over the Dolphins, adding eight rushes for five yards and one touchdown.

Maye’s two-yard touchdown run was a thing of beauty. The Patriots quarterback took off to the right side of the field, faking a pitch to Rhamondre Stevenson, which caused a Dolphins defender to fully bite on it, running right past Maye while the Patriots’ quarterback darted into the end zone. Maye’s first touchdown pass was thrown to Kyle Williams on a post route. It was well-placed, allowing Williams to secure the ball in stride just before entering the end zone. Maye later linked up with DeMario Douglas via play action for his second score. The Patriots’ quarterback is a QB1 against the Packers next week.

Emmett Johnson caught all five of his targets for 128 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ Week 8 loss to the Broncos.

He added one carry for 15 yards. Johnson racked up the bulk of his production on a 73-yard touchdown grab in the first half. The Broncos sent pressure and Patrick Mahomes perfectly lofted the ball to Johnson, who saw nothing but green grass ahead of him. The turf monster nearly took him down at the 10-yard line, but Johnson stayed upright enough and lost one final defender on his way into the end zone. He also picked up a 38-yard catch just before halftime to set up a last-second field goal. Johnson had more than two touches in just one of his previous three games headed into Week 8. Though he’s not going to challenge Kenneth Walker for RB1 duties anytime soon, this breakout performance should earn him a few more touches in Week 9. He will be have some value as a boom/bust FLEX play versus the Jets.

Patrick Mahomes completed 30-of-41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 28-24, Week 8 loss to the Broncos.

Mahomes posted a strong box score for fantasy managers and took care of the football with zero turnovers. He also took just two sacks, but the second was one that will haunt Chiefs fans for a while. After marching the offense down to the goal line under the two-minute warning, the Chiefs found themselves on fourth-and-goal. They initially got the score via a strike to Rashee Rice, but the play was blown dead via a false start. The Broncos’ pass-rush got to him on the second try, taking Mahomes down for a game-ending sack. On the whole, it was another dink-and-dunk game plan from Mahomes, who failed to get the deep ball going once again. Luckily for him, Emmet Johnson averaged 25.6 yards per catch and turned a short toss into a 73-yard touchdown in the first half. The Chiefs get a bounce-back spot against the Jets next week in a game where Mahomes will be just inside the QB1 ranks.

Kyren Willliams had 16 rushes for 56 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ Week 8 win against the Chargers, adding one catch for three yards.

The more efficient Blake Corum had 11 rushes for 73 yards and did not see a target in a run-heavy Rams offense. Williams led the LA backfield in routes but only had one look from Matthew Stafford. He was stuffed at the line of scrimmage a handful of times in the first half. The rushing volume in the Rams offense of late should make both Williams and Coum fantasy relevant every week, including next week against the Commanders.

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said OC Mike McDaniel will continue to call plays after the team’s 9-24, Week 8 loss to the Rams.

Harbaugh is standing by the organization’s biggest offseason hire. The Chargers at least got a little passing production going today, though obviously the results continue to fall short of expectations. The Chargers, now 0-6, face the Texans, 2-5, in Week 9. Houston’s underperforming defense could give the Chargers a chance to improve their standing next week.

Puka Nacua caught 11-of-12 targets for 80 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ Week 8 win against the Chargers.

Nacua, with Davante Adams (hamstring) sidelined, again dominated targets in the newly run-heavy LA offense. No other Rams pass catcher saw more than four targets on the day. Nacua’s touchdown came on a well-designed screen in the second half at the end of a long drive for the run-first Rams offense. Nacua, who had 41 targets over his prior four games, is among the safest players in fantasy football. He matches up against the Commanders in Week 9.

Tyler Higbee caught 1-of-2 targets for 14 yards in the Rams’ Week 8 win against the Chargers.

It was another disappointing outing for Higbee. This one came with Colby Parkinson (ribs) sidelined. Davis Allen had two catchers on two targets for eight yards. Higbee now hasn’t had more than 25 yards receiving in a game since the beginning of October, and has lost opportunities with the Rams going run heavy in recent weeks. Higbee won’t be a fantasy option in Week 9 against the Commanders.

Jack Campbell (neck) will remain in a local hospital tonight for continued evaluation and monitoring.

This update comes straight from the Lions’ organization. Campbell was taken to a local hospital shortly after being taken off the field on a stretcher. He is reportedly resting now. The team will provide further updates as it has them. We hope he recovers quickly and completely.

Jalen Nailor caught 4-of-4 targets for 38 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders’ Week 8 win over the Jets.

Nailor’s touchdown was his first as a Raider. It went down for all of two yards. In addition to the score, Nailor posted new season highs in yards and receptions, which obviously tells you all you need to know about his WR4 value: He doesn’t have any heading into Week 9 against the 49ers.
