Javonte Williams rushed 25 times for 155 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ Week 7 win over the Eagles.

Williams churned out consistently positive gains against the injury-riddled Eagles but took off in the fourth quarter, gaining over 60 yards in the final frame. He cashed in for fantasy managers with a touchdown with just over two minutes remaining on the clock to push his line into elite territory, despite failing to notch any receptions. The career high in yardage on the ground comes after the Cowboys averaged the fewest rush attempts per game during the first six weeks of the new season. Williams gets a sparkling matchup against the Cardinals at home in Week 8, where he’ll return to RB1 status in fantasy circles following the eruption against the Eagles.
Vikings have 'issues' with Murray and the offense
Chris Simms and Connor Rogers break down the Vikings' offensive struggles with Kyler Murray, questioning what the team can do to turn things around and if they will pursue trading for a quarterback.

Woof. The Cardinals simply overwhelmed the line of scrimmage with run blitzes and dared the Cowboys to do something about it; they often didn’t. Williams also fumbled away a goal-line tote only for it to wind up as a Cowboys touchdown by landing in the hands of journeyman tight end James Mitchell. Things should be easier next week against the Colts, where Williams will remain a reasonable RB1/high-end RB2 tweener.

Williams has now been held to 3.8 yards per carry or fewer in five of six games and 45 yards on the ground or fewer in four of six games, with seven combined touchdowns keeping his fantasy value afloat through the first third of the regular season. Williams has now seen 12 or fewer carries in four of six contests to start the year. The good news is that the Cowboys have no choice but to keep riding Williams until the wheels fall off considering the general lack of depth in the backfield, meaning there are likely to be better days ahead for the veteran back. He gets another middling matchup on the ground against the division rival Eagles in Week 7, where he will be a volume-driven RB2.

Williams has now averaged 3.8 yards per carry or fewer in four of five games, keeping his fantasy value afloat via six combined touchdowns through five weeks. While the touchdown equity is solid in one of the league’s most potent offenses, we’re liable to see more down weeks like the one he put forth against the Buccaneers unless, or until, the Cowboys can fix their woes on the ground. Williams did see all but one running back opportunity in this one, keeping him in the top six in backfield opportunity rate through Week 5. Consider Williams a volume-aided and touchdown-aided RB2 ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the reeling Packers.

Williams had a very easy rushing score — his first one where he only had to beat one defender to the outside after a pair of pulls. He also had a very hard one, where he dragged several Texans defenders into the red zone. The Cowboys didn’t run the ball much, but when they did it was effective. Williams was averaging 5.1 yards per tote before the second half, where he simply lived in the goal-to-go set. He’ll be on the low-end RB1 line in Week 5 against a Jalon Daniels-led Bucs outfit on Thursday night.

The Cowboys drew up a lot of carries for Williams early in this one. The 26-year-old back totaled seven carries for 45 yards on his team’s first two possessions, and punched in a two-yard score late in the fourth quarter to put the Cowboys up 10-0. Williams would mostly be bottled up by the Ravens after his score, but he did break free for a 22-yard run in the third quarter that helped set up a Brandon Aubrey field goal — which was blocked. This is undoubtedly the best game of the season for Williams, who hadn’t gone for more than 41 yards in either of his first two games. That said, he still struggled at times to get going on the ground, as seven of his carries went for two or fewer yards. His volume remains reliable enough to keep him in the RB2 conversation for next week’s game against the Texans.

The Cowboys dominated through the air on Sunday, but the same can’t be said of their efforts on the ground. Washington bottled up Williams all afternoon, with his biggest play coming on a nine-yard run on the Cowboys’ final drive. Williams has just 71 rushing yards on 24 attempts (3.0 YPC), but has also seen nine targets in his first two games. He remains the unquestioned leader of the Cowboys’ backfield and will be a volume-based RB2 in next week’s game against the Ravens.

Williams understandably operated as a clear workhorse for a Cowboys team with little depth at the position following Malik Davis’ season-ending injury earlier in the week. His two second half scores and five receptions masked poor rushing efficiency on a night the Cowboys ran only 52 offensive plays, although a robust 32.7 percent total opportunity share foreshadows the potential for continued elite counting stats for the remainder of the regular season. Fantasy managers can continue to start Williams as a volume-driven RB1 as the team prepares to host the Commanders in Week 2.

Per Schottenheimer, Blue and Mafah “are in a tight battle for the backup running back spot.” Blue has received positive reports for some time now. His speed and receiving ability make him an ideal complement to starting RB Javonte Williams, who “probably won’t get a whole lot of run” in the preseason. If Blue can secure the role, he could warrant FLEX treatment on a weekly basis. Mafah (6'/234) is a burly rusher. Were he to win the RB2 job, he may be ill-suited to playing on passing downs, which could benefit Williams. We’ll see how things shake out in the preseason. Stay tuned.

Machota noted Blue’s pass-catching ability as the biggest reason for him to potentially see some work behind Williams. Blue caught 42 passes for 368 yards and six scores during his final season at Texas. He then flopped as a rookie, seeing just one catch and 38 carries in total. The bulk of his opportunities came in a meaningless Week 18 game. Still, Dallas did nothing to address their backfield depth this offseason and head coach Brian Schottenheimer has talked up Blue’s work ethic this time around. With a strong training camp, Blue could cement himself as a change-of-pace option for the Cowboys, putting him on the menu for fantasy drafters in deeper leagues.

Reporters noticed Williams was not participating in organized team activities last week. The Cowboys hosted their three-day mandatory minicamp this week, and it sounds like Williams was either limited or held out again today. Schottenheimer was asked whether this was due to Williams’ shoulder injury from last season or simply veteran maintenance. Fortunately, Schottenheimer said Williams is “in a great spot” and “looks great.” His absence was “more about getting the young guys some reps in this last full-speed practice.” It seems like the Cowboys are hoping that one of Blue or Mafah can step up and be a reliable backup. If one separates from the other, he will be a worthwhile late-round pick.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the team has received “positive” news on Jack Campbell after he suffered a neck injury in Week 8’s win over the Vikings.

The team has opted to not disclose any further details of Campbell’s injury, but this is obviously good news for the fourth-year linebacker. Campbell suffered a scary neck injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win and was eventually carted from the field after being down on the ground for several minutes. While the early reports are encouraging, it’s possible Campbell avoided the worst-case scenario but could still face a months-long journey back to the field. We will be sure to provide any updates as they come our way.

Cam Skattebo (hamstring) was seen working with trainers on Monday.

The Giants won’t release their first injury report for the week until Wednesday, but in the team’s first practice after its bye week, Skattebo was seen working off to the side with trainers. Skattebo injured his hamstring late on a 42-yard run in overtime in Week 7’s win over the Texans, but said he expected to be okay after the bye. While that may still be the case, fantasy managers will want to check his practice status throughout the week to see if he’s at risk of missing Week 9’s game against the Eagles.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Lamar Jackson is “likely out for the season” after suffering a thumb injury in Week 8’s loss to the Bills.

Head coach Jesse Minter didn’t dismiss the possibility of this being a season-ending injury for Jackson when asked about it after the game, but the optics on the field weren’t good, and the team wasted little time announcing he would undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to learn in the days ahead that Jackson’s season is over, but the team will likely wait until after he has his surgery to make any formal announcement. With Jackson and Tyler Huntley (toe) both being sidelined, rookie UDFA Joe Fagnano is slated to start on the short week on Thursday against the Jaguars.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said Kyler Murray is dealing with a sore hamstring and will undergo further evaluation.

Murray appeared to be slowed a bit by an injury in Week 8’s loss to the Lions, so this news isn’t all too surprising. O’Connell said Murray will go “through a full eval” of everything to determine the severity of his injury, but didn’t suggest this will cost Murray any time as the Vikings prepare to face the Bills next Monday night. That said, we know how these types of injuries can linger and lead to some missed time, so we won’t jump to assume Murray is in the clear for Week 9. In the event he can’t go, Carson Wentz would be in line to draw the start against Buffalo.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports free agent WR Brandon Aiyuk “is close to hiring new representatives in an effort to get back to the NFL and on a team.”

An entire offseason spent creating goofy Instagram videos in hopes of willing himself onto the Commanders’ roster didn’t go as Aiyuk had hoped. Instead, the 28-year-old receiver, who last played a snap in 2024, remains under contract with the 49ers after failing to apply for reinstatement, which remains the first step he would need to take if he hopes to be made available to other teams. The 49ers put a “left squad designation” on Aiyuk back in July, meaning while he remains under contract with the team, he does not count against the team’s 53-man roster. It seems unlikely he will remain with the Niners if/when he applies for reinstatement, meaning the team will either have to release him or find a trade suitor for him before this month’s deadline. It would be surprising if Aiyuk played a snap for any team in 2026.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said he expects Josh Jacobs to remain on the roster while the league investigates multiple allegations of domestic violence against him.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given that NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that Jacobs is “going to continue to play” while the league reviews this latest round of allegations. The league is not only reviewing these latest allegations, but is also looking into whether or not Jacobs was “upfront” with them about the initial allegations that led to him being placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt list. Barring an unexpected development this week, we would expect Jacobs to be on the field against the Patriots this week.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said he expects Micah Parsons (knee) to practice this week.

Parsons is not expected to suit up in Week 9 against the Patriots, but this is the next step in his recovery as he looks to return to the field. On Sunday, it was reported that the Packers were targeting a Week 12 return for Parsons, which would mean he plays on Thanksgiving Eve against the Rams if all goes according to plan.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Daniel Jones will start in Week 9 against the Cowboys.

After taking some time to evaluate his quarterback room, Steichen has decided to stick with Jones, saying he believes Jones gives the Colts “the best chance to win right now.” Jones has struggled mightily in his second season with the Colts and is now sitting on a 1,542-5-9 passing line this season, and he tossed two picks in Week 8’s 42-7 blowout loss to the Jaguars. He was pulled in favor of Anthony Richardson late in the game, but he will get at least one more start against a woeful Cowboys defense that is fresh off blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead to the Cardinals in a comeback that was orchestrated by Gardner Minshew. With only two teams on bye this week, Jones is nothing more than a desperation streamer in 2QB/superflex leagues.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales said the team is weighing whether or not to open Jonathon Brooks (core) return window this week

Canales said the oft-injured Brooks still has “some things to clear recovery-wise” but noted that he could still have his practice window opened this week. Brooks suffered a core muscle injury in Week 2 against the Falcons and handled just 11 touches in his first two games of the year. Given his injury history, it’s hard to know how close he could truly be to dressing on game day, but even when he does return, we would still expect Chuba Hubbard to handle the majority of touches given how efficient he has been this season. In addition to Brooks, Canales said the team is also weighing when to open the return window for Xavier Legette, who has been sidelined since Week 2 with a knee injury.

Michael Pittman Jr. (foot) said he hopes to return after the Steelers’ Week 9 bye week.

Pittman has been on injured reserve since October 10th, and began running last week. While the veteran receiver said he hopes to return after the Steelers’ bye week, he also said that there’s “no time frame” for his return. Pittman’s foot injury was a reaggravation of a previous injury he had earlier in the season, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the Steelers exercised extreme caution to ensure it doesn’t flare up again when he returns. Pittman’s first season in Pittsburgh has been disappointing, to say the least. He has appeared in just three games and has totaled seven receptions for 89 scoreless yards.
