Jonathan Hefney, who starred last year with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, lined up opposite Louis Delmas as the Lions’ starting strong safety during Friday’s minicamp practice.
The pint-sized (5'9/185) Hefney earned all-CFL and Rookie of the Year honors with Winnipeg, but his presence next to Delmas speaks volumes about the Lions’ lack of options at strong safety. Hefney is a candidate to play situationally on passing downs, allowing C.C. Brown to concentrate on run defense. Despite his frame, Hefney was a smashing hitter at Tennessee.
  • SF OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #71

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said LT Trent Williams (hamstring) has “a chance to play” in Week 18 against the Seahawks.
Williams will not participate in the 49ers’ walkthrough this evening and was forced from Week 17 after just one snap. Consider him firmly in the questionable camp for the team’s divisional showdown against the Seahawks in Week 18.
Berry: Saints QB Shough should be OROY
Matthew Berry, Jay Croucher and Connor Rogers break down their waiver wire quarterbacks, including New Orleans' Tyler Shough and Green Bay's Malik Willis.
  • SF Wide Receiver #1
49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (knee/ankle) was limited on Tuesday.
The 49ers are hosting only a walkthrough this evening. Logging a limited session is a plus for Pearsall, who has been plagued by lower-body injuries this season. He looked great running routes against the Bears last week, and can be treated as a WR3 with upside against the Seahawks’ tough defense in Week 18.
  • SF Tight End #85
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said TE George Kittle (ankle) has “a chance to play” in Week 18 against the Seahawks.
Great news. Kittle will be a limited participant in Tuesday evening’s walkthrough. The talented tight end sat out in Week 17 after missing practice all week. Backup TE Jake Tonges caught 7-of-8 targets for 60 yards and one touchdown in Kittle’s stead. If Kittle is unable to face the Seahawks on Saturday, Tonges will again be a viable streamer.
  • SF Running Back #23
49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (back) will not practice on Tuesday.
The 49ers will conduct a walkthrough today, though McCaffrey will not participate. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that McCaffrey’s back is “a little stiff.” Trainers tended to McCaffrey’s back between drives, late in the fourth quarter during the 49ers’ Week 17 win over the Bears. He returned and played effectively. We expect him to do so this week as well, though backup RB Brian Robinson must be rostered wherever he is available.
  • CLE Head Coach
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the Browns and Raiders have done “preliminary research” on a coaching change.
What exactly that entails, Fowler doesn’t actually get into, but he says “those are two places I see as like — they’ve done their preliminary research for a potential move, doesn’t mean they’re likely to do it or that they’ve decided yet.” We blurbed yesterday that Ian Rapoport doubts the Raiders will keep Pete Carroll. It sure sounds like the Browns and Stefanski should also be on the radar for a firing (or potentially a trade) once Week 18 unfolds. Stefanski gave up playcalling to Tommy Rees in early November and was reportedly less than thrilled when the Browns traded Joe Flacco to the Bengals. If the Browns did move on from Stefanski, he would be a strong candidate to pick up a new head coaching gig this offseason after twice winning the AP Coach of the Year award in 2020 and 2023.
  • GB Defensive Lineman #97
Packers placed DL Jordon Riley (Achilles) on injured reserve.
They also sent CB Kamal Hadden to IR after both Hadden and Riley suffered season-ending injuries against the Ravens in Week 17. Both players are at risk of missing time in training camp, if not spending time on the PUP list during the regular season.
  • TB Cornerback #35
Buccaneers CB Jamel Dean (shoulder) did not practice on Tuesday.
Dean has been by far Tampa’s best cornerback this year, producing a 76.9 PFF coverage rating. It would be a big loss if he wasn’t able to go against the Panthers on Saturday. Dean left Week 17’s loss to the Dolphins in the third quarter and did not return.
  • TB Quarterback #6
Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (shoulder/knee) was limited in Tuesday’s practice.
Mayfield has been listed with a left shoulder injury previously, but pops up here with a right shoulder listing from the Buccaneers. We don’t doubt that Mayfield will play. We also don’t doubt that he’s clearly playing through injury at this point, as he has struggled since leaving Tampa’s Week 12 game against the Rams at halftime. Over his past five appearances he has just a 63 percent completion rate, 216.8 yards per game, and seven touchdowns against five interceptions.
  • TB Tackle #78
Buccaneers T Tristan Wirfs (toe) did not practice on Tuesday.
So much for him re-appearing! In all honestly this isn’t a big deal, and the fact that reporters mistook him for practicing is probably still a good sign for his chances of suiting up in Week 18’s must-win against the Panthers. Most veteran offensive linemen are allowed to play with little practice, and as long as Wirfs finds the field on Wednesday or Thursday he should be considered likely to go.
  • ARI Quarterback #1
ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss believes there’s “an outside chance” a new Cardinals regime would keep Kyler Murray.
In other words: If both GM Monti Ossenfort and head coach Jonathan Gannon get fired, Cardinals ownership will leave the quarterback decision up to their new braintrust. Most rumors that we’ve seen leading up to Black Monday have had Ossenfort safe — he’d probably bring back Jacoby Brissett on the second year of a two-year deal and then draft a quarterback to either push or develop behind Brissett. But given how disappointing the Cardinals have been en route to falling from 2-0 to 3-13, we shouldn’t be surprised if Ossenfort doesn’t survive.
