Jonathan Thomson endured a remarkable, rollercoaster third round of 34-34=68, but still hit the 54-hole stage of the Made In Denmark in a tie for second alongside Thomas Detry and Steven Brown on 15-under 201, just one back of leader Lee Westwood.
The huge Englishman hit the highs and the lows on his Saturday lap. It started with a low, as he lurched to bogey-4 at the first and double bogey-6 at the third, but his circuit of Silkeborg Ry GC was soon transformed. He reeled off a hat-trick of red at the fifth, sixth and seventh then bested it all when his approach to the par-5 eighth left him just 10'0" for eagle and he took it. Amazingly he had made the turn in 2-under. The fun continued on the back nine with more birdies at the 10th, 11th, 14th and, in unlikely fashion, the 16th. He found a fairway bunker from the tee, the commentary team predicted a tough shot, Thomson made wonderful connection, eased the ball to within three feet and dropped it. He was alone in second on the 18th tee. Ahead of him Westwood made double bogey; he was now the front runner; he then double bogeyed himself. Nonetheless, a great opportunity awaits on Sunday and his putter is hot: He had 15 one-putts in round three.
