From the penultimate pairing, R1 co-leader and World No. 38 Patrick Reed backed up with a 1-over 35-36=71 in R3 of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth to post 7-under 203, down one spot to T5, four shy of leader Scottie Scheffler (68).
After opening with a couple off 66s, the Texan began solo 4th, one short of three co-leaders, including playing competitor Scheffler. On nine (of 14) fairways and nine greens in regulation, he gained 0.717 strokes off-the-tee and 1.123 around-the-green, but lost 1.690 on approach and 0.541 on-the-green. The 31-year-old birdied both of the par 5s, but that was it, outbalanced by three squares at 5, 10 and 13 (3-putt from 47'11"), and lost 0.391 strokes against the field average on Saturday. He’ll be in the fourth-to-last pairing on Sunday with R1 co-leader Chris Kirk, chasing a 10th TOUR victory in his 265th career start, and is in the top 10 thru 54 holes for just a second time this season in 18 events, joining the Mexico Open three starts ago, where he was T8 before cratering to T42 (67-66-70-75).
