Zurich Financial Services, which signed on to sponsor the PGA tournament in New Orleans this year, announced on Monday that it will boost the purse to $5.5 million. Last year’s event paid out $5.1 million.
‘We believe that puts us among the leaders on the PGA Tour,’ said Craig Fundum, chief marketing officer for Zurich Financial. ‘And we want to make sure that we stay there.’
The newly named Zurich Classic of New Orleans is scheduled for April 25-May 1, 2005, at the Tournament Players Club of Louisiana, which opened in April, 2004.
New Orleans has hosted a PGA tournament since 1938, when the Greater New Orleans Open Invitational was introduced at City Park Golf Club. The tournament was not held from 1949-1957, then resumed at City Park before moving to Lakewood Country Club in 1963 and then to English Turn Golf & Country Club in 1989.
Last year’s tournament, won by Vijay Singh, was the held at English Turn.
