Bruins Stake Claim to No 1 Ranking

The UCLA men’s golf team won its first tournament of the season, capturing the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, and senior John Merrick won his first individual title of the season.

The Bruins posted a final round score of 292, 8-over par, and won by 10 shots over Kansas State. The Bruins recorded a 54-hole total of 886. Illinois was third at 898, Oklahoma fourth at 904 and Augusta State finished fifth at 905.

Merrick fired a final round, even-par score of 71 (216) and held off Toledo’s Brad Heaven by one shot for medallist honors. Heaven shot a final round 67 for a three-round total of 217, 4-over par. The victory was Merrick’s second career collegiate title. Last year he won the Pac-10 Championship.

The Bruins’ Steve Conway tied for eighth place at 223 after a final round 76, and sophomore John Poucher tied for 13th at 225 (73). Senior Travis Johnson tied for 22nd at 224 (75) and Roy Moon finished in a tie for 49th at 234 (73).
