Coody is playing on a sponsor’s invite this week and taking full advantage of the opportunity on day one. He lost nearly a stroke off-the-tee but gained 2.9 strokes on approach (2nd) and 2.8 strokes putting (5th). Highlights included a 30-footer at the 8th and a 23-footer for birdie at the 11th. The Texas alum has been boom or bust during his first season on the Korn Ferry Tour. “I won in Panama and it could not be more similar to this. Kind of a tropical, Bermuda situation with a lot of wind. So it’s really cool to see that my game translates and I hope to continue that.”

The 22-year-old Coody, who hails from Plano, Texas, recently turned pro after finishing his college career at Texas, where he earned the No. 1 spot in the PGA Tour University Class of 2022. “It’s crazy. It feels like a blur,” said Coody, whose carded a 5-under 66 took in the final round. “I knew the front nine was gettable and I knew in the afternoon this back nine plays tough. I just played it really aggressive on the front nine, just great numbers, really nice putts. Just everything seemed to go my way.” After missing the cut in his first KFT start, at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, he followed up with a T-4 at the Wichita Open. “Last week, finishing fourth in Wichita gave me such confidence,” he added. “I won’t say I knew this was going to happen, but I definitely felt that I would play well and I felt the momentum from last week.” Coody, who tied Falmouth Country Club’s course record with a 9-under 62 in the second round, led the field with 25 total birdies (two eagles, 23 birdies). He’s the 13th first-time winner and sixth rookie winner on the KFT this season. Coody is the third PGA Tour University alum to win a KFT event this year, joining Class of 2021 winners Trevor Werbylo (Lake Charles Championship) and Davis Thompson (REX Hospital Open). He’s in the field for this week’s The Ascendant at TPC Colorado in Berthoud, Colo.
