Josh Ockimey has retired from professional baseball.
Ockimey is returning to the Red Sox as a member of their professional scouting department. The 27-year-old first baseman spent the first eight years of his career in Boston’s minor-league system before signing with the Phillies last year. He never wound up making it to the majors, but became a real fan favorite in a pair of Triple-A cities, Pawtucket and Worcester, over the last few years.

Phillies signed 1B Josh Ockimey to a minor league contract.
Ockimey announced the news via social media on Monday. The 26-year-old corner infielder has yet to appear in the majors and slashed .225/.358/.416 with 15 homers over 98 games with Boston’s Triple-A affiliate last year. He’ll give the Phillies some extra depth at first base going into camp. You know, whenever that ends up happening.

Red Sox signed 1B Josh Ockimey to a minor league contract.
Ockimey turned 25 in October and batted .204/.353/.459 with 25 homers over 122 games during his last game action with Triple-A Pawtucket in 2019. He’ll serve as upper-level depth for Boston next year.

Red Sox 1B prospect Josh Ockimey contributed two hits including a two-run homer Wednesday in a win for Low-A Greenville.
His other hit was an RBI double in the first inning. Ockimey has had a productive year for the Drive. He leads the South Atlantic League in walks (58) and is also tied for third in home runs with 14. The 20-year-old from Philadelphia had been just four for his last 37 prior to Wednesday’s outburst.

Red Sox prospect Josh Ockimey reached base four times on Wednesday for High-A Salem.
Ockimey went 3-for-3 in the game, and he also walked. He’s limited to first base, but Ockimey can swing the bat, and he draws more than his fair share of walks. He also draws more than his fair share of strikeouts, and he doesn’t have elite power. That makes him a divisive prospect, but there’s at least a chance he gets on enough to be fantasy relevant in the next couple years.

Red Sox 1B prospect Josh Ockimey went 3-for-4 with a homer on Thursday for Double-A Portland.
It’s the first homer of the season for Ockimey, who missed the first week-plus of the season with a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old first baseman has an excellent approach at the plate, and he also shows above-average power from the left side. He also strikes out too much, and he’s not a strong defender, meaning he could move to DH. He’s going to need to stay at first to capitalize on his value, but if he can, he could be a starter that could help Boston in 2019.

Red Sox 1B prospect Josh Ockimey collected a season-high four hits Sunday in a win for Low-A Greenville.
Ockimey improved his average from .190 to .324 by going 7-for-13 in the series with two home runs and four RBI. The 20-year-old now ranks third in the South Atlantic League in both slugging percentage (.676) and OPS (1.087). Ockimey needs just one more round-tripper to tie his home run total from last season (four).
