Roenicke

Roenicke posted a cool 0.79 ERA in 11 1/3 innings this spring in the Cactus League to earn the job. The right-hander will function as a middle reliever for the Rox.

Roenicke posted a 3.25 ERA over 88 2/3 innings for the Rockies this season, though it also came along with an ugly 54/43 K/BB ratio. He’ll compete for a middle relief role next spring.

Roenicke was awfully valuable out of the pen for the Rockies last year, throwing 88 2/3 innings with a 3.25 ERA, but they decided to waive him over the winter. Claimed by the Twins, he has a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings so far this year. Meanwhile, the Rockies’ bullpen imports have ERAs of 6.75 (Wilton Lopez) and 8.53 (Chris Volstad).

Roenicke appeared in 63 games for the Twins this season, owning a 4.35 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 62 innings. The move was made to clear space on the 40-man roster, and the 31-year-old will likely resurface somewhere next season.

The brother in law of new teammate Ian Desmond, Roenicke put up a 4.35 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 63 appearances last season for the Twins. His velocity has steadily declined the last few years, making him just organizational depth at this point.

He will compete for a spot in the Pericos rotation after registering a 3.80 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 49/23 K/BB ratio over 42 2/3 innings of relief last season in the Angels’ minor league system. Roenicke, 34, last appeared in a major league game back in 2013 with the Twins.

The 33-year-old hurler hasn’t appeared in a big league game since 2013. He spent the 2015 season in the Brewers organization where he compiled a 6.15 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 71/39 K/BB ratio over 123 innings.

The 26-year-old has been working a late-inning role in the minors -- he has a 3.00 ERA, 11 saves and a 26/3 K/BB ratio in 24 innings at Louisville -- but he may end up pitching more often in the sixth or seventh inning for the Reds.

Roenicke had a strong season debut with the Reds earlier this month, so his return doesn’t come as a surprise. Given enough time, he could emerge as a setup man, and if the Reds deal one of their veteran arms, that emergence could happen quickly.
