Mariners LHP prospect Bryan Perez struck out seven hitters over five innings while allowed just an unearned run on Tuesday for short-season AZL Mariners.
Perez, 18, allowed four hits, and he walked one. He now owns a 2.25 ERA in his four starts in the Arizona League, and he has pitched well with an 18/3 K/BB ratio. The Mariners do not have a ton of young impact starters, but Perez has a chance to be one. He touches the low 90s without much effort, and there’s projection in his 6-foot, 170-pound frame. He also shows a plus curve and above-average slider, and the makings of a solid change. Perez repeats his delivery well, and should have at least above-average command. There’s a long way to go, but Perez has a chance to be a mid-rotation starter in the next decade, maybe more if the fastball does make the jump many expect.
