Maldonado

Maldonado, who turns 26 next month, was sort of a prospect a few years ago, but he no longer has much chance of making it as a backup. He hit .265/.353/.441 for Double-A Birmingham last season.

Maldonado got his first hit in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game. He was just called up from Triple-A Indianapolis this week.

The 27-year-old Maldonado, a former Mariners and Astros prospect, will be making his major league debut. He hit .282/.350/.390 while spending most of the year in Triple-A.

He’ll function as organizational depth, in a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency fashion.

He’ll take the place of the injured Sandy Leon (ankle) on the active roster. Maldonado, 33, is hitting .211/.273/.380 with two homers and a .653 OPS over his first 21 games with the Chiefs this year. He’ll back up Jesus Flores for now, but we suspect the Nationals will be in the market for catching help in the days ahead.

The Nats designated Maldonado for assignment in September, but he’s now back in the fold. He’ll be around merely as organizational depth.

He’s making room on the 40-man roster for Kurt Suzuki. Maldonado should clear waivers and remain in the organization.
