Penn shouldn’t have to wait much longer for a rotation spot in Baltimore, but since he pitched yesterday, he won’t be a candidate to start for the Orioles on Tuesday. The nod could go to Daniel Cabrera, who would pitching on four days’ rest after starting for Ottawa on Thursday.

If cleared Penn will begin pitching at extended spring training in Florida.

Penn is rehabbing at the Orioles’ minor league complex in Florida and may head back to the minors even when he’s recovered.

Penn will make his season debut Tuesday against the Mariners. AL-only leaguers can go ahead and activate him right away.

Penn will work out with the Orioles’ extended spring training group in Florida before likely heading back to the minors.

“Each outing he gets stronger and more consistent,” director of minor league operations David Stockstill said. “It takes time to get your rhythm and mechanics back when you have a month off in the middle of the season. I think he is getting very close to helping the big league club.”

“I would think he’d be a call-up for sure,” Perlozzo said. “I’m not the GM, but I’d assume he’ll be here.”

It sounds like Penn’s recall is right around the corner. “I guess you could,” manager Sam Perlozzo said. “Basically you’re on that now. I think that could be a possibility.”

Penn, who struck out eight, threw 124 pitches before being removed, something that might not make the Orioles too happy. He’s set to join the club’s rotation early next month.

It’s likely that a reliever will be sent down to make room for him. Penn will be facing the Mariners, so he could be worth using in AL-only leagues right away.
