St. Louis infielder Mark Ellis is headed to the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle, which tends to sideline players for more than the minimum 15 days.
Ellis has barely played of late thanks to the emergence of rookie Kolten Wong at second base and the 37-year-old has hit just .192 in 65 games this season on a one-year, $5.25 million deal.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny actually started Ellis at first base last week, so perhaps the injury taking him out of consideration for the lineup until mid-September won’t be all negative.
