The Diamondbacks offered a one-year contract to free agent first baseman Lyle Overbay last week and general manager Kevin Towers told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com earlier today that he is optimistic the deal will eventually get done.
“I would say it’s progressing well, but it’s not done,” D-backs GM Kevin Towers said. “Everything looks good, although it’s not a done deal. I’m cautiously optimistic. We still have some things that we have to work through that we’re still working through, but nothing’s really changed. My gut is he’ll still end up coming here.”
Overbay, who turns 35 in January, batted .234/.310/.360 with nine home runs, 47 RBI and a .670 OPS over 440 plate appearances this season between the Pirates and Diamondbacks. He was released by Pittsburgh in May and posted an .840 OPS over 18 games with Arizona down the stretch. He would likely serve as a backup to young slugger Paul Goldschmidt next season.
