Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that Mike Lowellwill fly to Texas on Saturday to meet with the Rangers’ front office and take a physical.
The Rangers have a preliminary agreement to trade catcher Max Ramirez to the Red Sox in exchange for Lowell and cash considerations, however the trade has been on hold for more than a week as the club evaluates the 35-year-old’s surgically-repaired right hip and right thumb. Lowell met with a hand specialist in Arizona earlier this week.
Stark writes that Lowell would be the club’s regular third baseman, but with Michael Young entrenched at the position, he’ll more likely be asked to play some first base for the first time in his major league career.
