Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera and DH Victor Martinez both ran the bases on Saturday for the first time this spring, MLB.com’s Jason Beck reports. Cabrera had foot surgery in October while Martinez had knee surgery in February.
Manager Brad Ausmus wouldn’t rule out the two players making their Grapefruit League debuts during the upcoming week.
Though Cabrera wasn’t as productive in 2014 as he had been in previous seasons, he still finished with a robust .313/.371/.524 slash line along with a league-leading 52 doubles, 25 home runs, and 109 RBI in 685 plate appearances. Martinez had the best season of his career, finishing second in AL MVP balloting with a .335/.409/.565 line, 32 home runs, and 103 RBI. His .409 OBP led the league. Needless to say, getting both players back with enough time to get ready for the regular season is important for the Tigers.
