Clay Buchholz had hoped to return from an elbow injury to pitch at least once in September, but the Red Sox have officially shut him down for the remainder of the season with a right flexor strain.
Dr. James Andrews advised Buchholz to avoid surgery and instead gave him a platelet-rich plasma injection to aid the healing process, so the Red Sox are hoping he’ll enter 2016 healthy. Boston holds a $13 million team option on Buchholz, which figures to be exercised if he checks out well medically.
Prior to going on the disabled list Buchholz had a 3.26 ERA and 107/23 K/BB ratio in 113 innings, bouncing back from a rough 2014 season to re-establish himself as a front-line starter at age 30.
