Report: Mets have offered Chris Young more than $1 million guaranteed

Shortly after the Mets added Chris Capuano as an option for their starting rotation last night, there were a few reports that suggested the club wasn’t done looking for additional help.

With that in mind, Buster Olney of ESPN.com hears that the Mets’ offer to free agent right-hander Chris Young includes a guaranteed salary of more than $1 million.

Young has only made 18 starts over the past two seasons due to shoulder problems, but if he’s going to make a rebound, there are few better settings for it than the spacious Citi Field. The 31-year-old right-hander has a career flyball rate of 53 percent, right there among the highest for all active pitchers.

The Mets would probably be better off with Jeff Francis, but he’s likely to get a more substantial guaranteed salary after a strong second half last season.
