The Nets hosted the Miami Heat for a preseason game in Brooklyn on Thursday, but the only truly meaningful moment of the night came before the game even started.
Jason Kidd, currently in his first year as head coach with the Nets, played more than six of his 19 NBA seasons in New Jersey, and led them to back-to-back Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. He had his jersey retired by the organization prior to Thursday’s contest, and the only question surrounding the honor was, why do it during the preseason?
“I don’t know if anyone has had their number retired and had to go to work,” Kidd said.
