The Suns had dropped four straight games when they fired Jeff Hornacek, and Phoenix’s losing streak stretched to 13 under interim coach Earl Watson.
But the Suns have since lifted from their tailspin, and Watson deserves some credit.
At least a couple of his players – and they say more – are willing to give plenty.

Regardless to Suns outcome, interim coach Earl Watson has gained strong respect from players. Two said consensus is players want him to stay

Watson has instilled a level of determination in the Suns that they badly needed. He has put players in clear roles, and they’re sometimes competitive – a huge step up from the state of the team Watson inherited.
But these are modest accomplishments in the grand scheme. Next season, Phoenix will expect much more – maybe even competing for a playoff berth. Just because Watson can motivate and connect with this group doesn’t mean he can out-scheme opponents for a team ready to win.
And players often lift their spirits after an in-season coaching change. See Markieff Morris. It’s no lock Watson will remain a strong personality manager without the natural boost of a coaching shakeup.
Still, Watson has decently handled the task at hand. If his players believe in him, maybe he deserves a chance at the next challenge.
