The Bengals already lost their starting quarterback, Joe Burrow, on Nov. 16 to a wrist injury that required surgery. The Jaguars lost their starting quarterback with 5:25 remaining in the fourth quarter on Monday night when Trevor Lawrence injured his ankle.
Lawrence couldn’t put any weight on the right ankle as he was helped off the field with the assistance of two athletic trainers.
Monday Night Football ended with backup quarterbacks Jake Browning and C.J. Beathard battling for the win in one of the most exciting games of the season.
They went to overtime before Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson made a 48-yard field goal with 1:45 remaining in overtime to give the Bengals a 34-31 upset win.
The Jaguars fell to 8-4, while the Bengals improved to 6-6.
The teams exchanged field goals in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter. McPherson gave the Bengals a brief 31-28 lead with a 54-yarder before Jaguars kicker Brandon McManus made a 40-yarder with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game for the fifth time and send it to overtime. McManus missed a 48-yarder wide right on the snap after Lawrence’s injury.
The Jaguars took the overtime kickoff and moved to the Cincinnati 45, where they faced third-and-seven. Beathard threw a 50-50 pass to Calvin Ridley, who caught it for a 43-yard gain to the 2-yard line. The play, though, was negated by a holding penalty on rookie offensive tackle Anton Harrison.
The Bengals got the ball back at their own 28 with 5:01 left and drove 42 yards in 12 plays to set up the game-winner.
Browning starred in his second career start, completing 32 of 37 passes for 354 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Ja’Marr Chase caught 11 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown.
Joe Mixon ran for 68 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries and caught six passes for 49 yards.
The Bengals had 491 yards to 376 for the Jaguars.
Lawrence was 22-of-29 for 258 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown before leaving. Beathard went 9-of-10 for 63 yards. Tight end Evan Engram caught nine passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
It was a bad night for the Jaguars, who, besides Lawrence, also lost Christian Kirk (groin) and cornerback Tre Herndon (concussion) to injuries.
Beathard grabbed his left wrist following a 7-yard run on his first play but remained in the game.
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence appeared to be seriously injured late in Monday Night Football.
With 5:25 remaining, Lawrence was searching for a receiver when left tackle Walker Little accidentally stepped on him while blocking Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. Hendrickson then went over the top of Lawrence, bending Lawrence’s right leg underneath him.
Lawrence was helped up by Little and Hendrickson before realizing he couldn’t walk on his own. He pounded the turf with his fist and slammed his helmet to the ground.
Hendrickson was credited with a 4-yard sack that brought out Brandon McManus to try a 48-yard field goal. It was wide right, leaving the game tied 28-28.
Lawrence needed assistance from two athletic trainers to get to the training room, and the Jaguars list him as questionable to return with an ankle injury.
C.J. Beathard will replace Lawrence.
Jake Browning has given Monday Night Football its fourth tie of the night.
In a fun back-and-forth game, Browning took a quarterback sneak across the goal line for a 1-yard score. It has tied the game 28-28 with 9:27 left.
Browning is making his second career start but playing like a wily veteran.
He is 24-of-28 for 300 yards and a touchdown for a 123.2 passer rating.
Ja’Marr Chase has nine receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown, including a 6-yard reception to the Jacksonville 4 on fourth-and-three after a drop on third down on the most recent scoring drive.
Jaguars receiver Parker Washington, a sixth-round rookie, had played only 12 offensive snaps this season before Christian Kirk’s injury. When Kirk went out with a groin injury on a 26-yard reception on the team’s first snap, Washington was called upon.
He has answered.
Washington has his first four catches, his first 47 receiving yards and his first touchdown.
On third-and-nine, Trevor Lawrence threw into the end zone, and Bengals safety Dax Hill undercut the pass. He had the interception in his hands . . . and then he didn’t.
The ball went through his hands and Washington tipped it and caught it lying on his back. He got his backside inbounds before rolling out of bounds.
It tied the game 21-21 with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter.
The Jaguars regained the lead after the Bengals got too cute for their own good. Cincinnati tried a second throwback pass after losing 7 yards on the first one on a throw by Ja’Marr Chase. This one ended worse, with Josh Allen picking Tyler Boyd’s pass and returning it 8 yards to the Cincinnati 9.
Lawrence reached it over the goal line on fourth-and-one to give the Jaguars the lead back at 28-21 with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter.
Bengals quarterback Jake Browning is making his second career start.
He is 19-for-21 for 261 yards with a touchdown, no interceptions and a passer rating of 134.3 early in the third quarter.
Browning has given the Bengals a 21-14 lead, their first lead of the night.
He found star receiver Ja’Marr Chase in one-on-one coverage with cornerback Tyson Campbell on third-and-two and hit him in stride for a 76-yard touchdown. It is the Bengals’ longest play of the season.
Chase now has seven catches for 104 yards.
The Jaguars will play the rest of the night without receiver Christian Kirk (groin) and cornerback Tre Herndon (concussion). Both were ruled out.
