A day before the official schedule release, we already know that the Eagles will have four big-audience, standalone games. While it’s not a surprise for the defending Super Bowl champion to figure so prominently in games that will be seen by many millions, the news underscores the news that is destined to come next week.
With so many games that will be played when no other games are being played, the league will be even more likely to get the tush push out of the sport when the owners reconvene on May 20-21 in Minneapolis.
The Eagles will play in the Thursday night season opener against the Cowboys, a Week 10 Monday night game against the Packers (who have proposed the banishment of the play, either directly or as a straw man), the Black Friday game against the Bears, and a December 20 Saturday doubleheader against the Commanders.
Although the league has been moving the tush-push goalposts more aggressively than hurricane at Hard Rock Stadium, the various reasons for getting rid of the play apply even more strongly when everyone is watching. If, as the league supposedly believes, a catastrophic injury could happen on the play, the league won’t want it to happen before well over 20 million fans. Likewise, if it’s an aesthetics issue, the optics become even uglier if a huge audience is watching.
Regardless, the tea leaves already hinted that the ivory tower is coming down on the tush push. The fact that at least four — and likely more — Eagles games will be played at a time when many are watching will only make it more likely that sufficient arms will be twisted to torpedo the tush push.
And then the Eagles will revert to running a highly effective quarterback sneak, creating basically the same results.
YouTube will be the exclusive home of the second game of the NFL season.
The NFL announced today that YouTube will stream the Friday night Week One game in São Paulo, Brazil on Friday, September 5. The announcement indicated that the YouTube stream will be free and will not require a paid YouTube subscription.
Although NFL Sunday Ticket has been offered through YouTube for the last two seasons, this is the first time a game has been available exclusively on YouTube.
The Chargers will be the designated home team for the Brazil game. The NFL has not announced who the Chargers’ opponent will be, but reports have indicated it will be the Chiefs.
The Vikings’ short-straw road trip to Europe for back-to-back games against the Steelers in Ireland and the Browns in London comes with a competitive advantage. Minnesota will have two fewer traditional road games than they would have had in 2025.
Like all NFC teams in the odd-numbered years, the Vikings have eight home games and nine road games. By playing two of those games on a neutral site, the Vikings will have only seven true road games.
With none of the other NFC North teams selected for international road games in 2025, the Lions, Bears, and Packers will each have nine usual road games.
The Rams, Commanders, and Falcons are the only other NFC teams that will have a neutral-site road game.
So, yes, although the Vikings’ schedule will be disrupted by playing two games on consecutive Sundays on foreign soil, they will entire truly hostile territory two fewer times than the rest of the division, and most of the conference. And while it won’t matter if the Vikings lose both games, they’re getting an enhanced opportunity to win by not having the play in Pittsburgh or Cleveland. Especially if either or both of those games otherwise would have been scheduled for later in the season, when weather could be a factor.
The dome-team Lions, in contrast, will play their two AFC North road games at Baltimore and Cincinnati. If either or both happen after Halloween, the elements could add to the overall difficulty — along with the fact that they’ll be facing the Ravens and Bengals in their normal home environments.
When it’s time to convert the final standings into a seven-team playoff tree, the Vikings could have an edge. It won’t matter if they aren’t generally “good” in 2025. If they’re good enough to compete for a postseason berth, the two games on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean could be the difference between winning the division or finishing second — or between making the playoffs or missing out.
The NFL announced today which six games will be played in Europe in 2025 — including two in a row for the Vikings.
All six games will be played on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. ET, which means they will be afternoon games in Europe and early-mornings for American fans. In the U.S., all six games will air on NFL Network.
A new twist this year is that the Vikings will play in Dublin one week and then play in London a week later, which could function for the NFL as an experiment to see how travel within Europe goes. The league is exploring playing more games in Europe, and possibly even locating a team or multiple teams across the pond, and every new scheduling wrinkle is a step toward determining the logistics of that. The Vikings will be the first NFL team ever to play back-to-back-to-back games in three countries, going from the United States to Ireland to England.
The six games in Europe are:
September 28: Vikings at Steelers in Croke Park in Dublin.
October 5: Vikings at Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
October 12: Broncos at Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
October 19: Rams at Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London.
November 9: Falcons at Colts at Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
November 16: Commanders at Dolphins at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.
The NFL has also scheduled a Chargers “home” game on Friday, September 5, at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo. The Chargers’ opponent has not yet been announced.
Three games from the Eagles’ 2025 schedule were revealed on Monday and a fourth was announced on Tuesday morning.
A trip to Green Bay to face the Packers will be on tap in Week 10. The game will be on Monday night and will be broadcast on both ESPN and ABC.
The Eagles beat the Packers in Brazil to kick off the 2024 season and they ended the Packers’ season in the wild card round of the playoffs, but the chance to exact some revenge is not going to be the only storyline for this matchup.
The Packers proposed the tush push ban this offseason and there is expected to be further discussion of it at the next league meetings. If there is a ban put in place, it will add another bit of intrigue to a matchup with the team that has been nearly unstoppable on the play over the last three seasons.
Philadelphia will open the season at home against the Cowboys and they’ll host the Bears on Black Friday before a Week 16 Saturday date with the Commanders in Washington. The Packers will be in Chicago on the same day as that NFC East matchup.
The NFL will release its full schedule Wednesday, but the Eagles already know three of their 17 games.
The latest schedule reveal has the Eagles hosting the Bears on Black Friday, Nov. 28, at 3 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on Prime Video.
The NFL began playing an annual Black Friday game in 2023.
The defending Super Bowl champions open the NFL schedule with a Thursday, Sept. 4 game against the rival Cowboys. That game will kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
On Saturday in Week 16, the Eagles will face the rival Commanders in Washington. That is expected to lead to a Christmas Day game. The Packers and Bears also play on Saturday in Week 16.
Philadelphia will have 11 games against 2024 playoff teams. It faces seven of the top-10 scoring offenses and six of the top-seven scoring defenses.
The Bears are expected to be much improved after an offseason of moves that included adding head coach Ben Johnson, offensive guard Joe Thuney, offensive guard Jonah Jackson, center Drew Dalman and rookie tight end Colston Loveland.
For the second consecutive year, the Chiefs are playing on Christmas.
Although the NFL is not declaring the Chiefs a permanent Christmas host, they’ll play on Christmas again this year: The Broncos are visiting the Chiefs on Christmas Night in a game that will air on Amazon Prime Video.
Last year the Chiefs played the Steelers on Christmas Day, and the Chiefs have indicated that they’d like to be a permanent fixture as part of the NFL’s Christmas scheduling. The league has drawn big audiences on Christmas and plans to play three games every Christmas going forward, no matter what day of the week Christmas falls on.
The other two Christmas games have not yet been announced, but the Chiefs and Broncos are a big AFC West matchup, and it’s likely that the other Christmas games will be NFC games with playoff implications, possibly involving the Commanders, Eagles, Bears and Packers, who will be playing the Saturday before Christmas and will therefore have an extra day of rest heading into a Thursday game.
While this offseason has brought no shortage of storylines and shocking moves, it is nearly time for the action to return to the football field. Training camps all over the NFL are now in session, which means regular season football is just weeks away.
