Headline: 49ers gain a cornerback, not lose one.
Indeed, after having Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox depart in the last two days, the 49ers have added a corner, announcing the signing of San Diego’s Shareece Wright to a one-year contract on Saturday.
PFT’s 69th-ranked free agent, Wright was one of the better cornerbacks left on the market, and he seems a strong candidate to see regular playing time in San Francisco’s secondary. According to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Wright’s deal is for $4 million.
A USC product, the 27-year-old Wright started all 27 games in which he played in the last two seasons for the Chargers, defending 18 passes and notching one interception. Wright (5-11, 182) was timed at 4.46 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine.
The 49ers also added some offensive line depth Saturday, agreeing on a two-year deal with Erik Pears, the Bills’ starting right guard a season ago. The agreement was reported by Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910 AM in Phoenix and then announced by Pears’s representatives.
Pears (6-8, 316) has started 86 games in nine NFL seasons. He also has experience at tackle.
