Frank Gore has spent his entire 10-year NFL career in San Francisco, but in two days he becomes a free agent. The 49ers, however, think he’s staying around.

Owner Jed York told the San Francisco Chronicle that the 49ers want Gore back, Gore wants to be back, and there’s a way to work things out.

“We want him back,” York said. “I think he wants to be here. I know he wants to be here. And I think we’ll figure out a way to do it. We’ll definitely try. I think we’ll figure out a way. That’s my feeling.”

The 49ers have been saying all offseason that they expect to do a new deal with Gore, which raises the question of why the deal hasn’t gotten done. If both sides want to do it, why are they cutting it so close to the start of free agency?

If Gore does reach free agency, he’ll surely draw some interest, even though he’s a running back who will turn 32 in May. Gore carried 255 times for 1,106 yards last season and still has some gas left in the tank. He’ll help some team this year. The 49ers hope it’s them.
