PFT Season Preview co-cover boy Ben Leber, linebacker for the Vikings, typically keeps a low profile.
When it comes to the possibility of adding two regular-season games, Leber has opted for something other than silence.
“It’s funny that the guys that are suggesting adding two games are the guys that get to sit in the [luxury] box and enjoy the game just like a fan and not take any wear and tear,” Leber said Thursyday, during an appearance on 1500 ESPN’s Reusse & Mackey show.
“It’s easy for them to say, ‘Hey, let’s just add two more games. It’s no big deal. We’ll just take out two preseason games.’ But if you do the math, it’s probably a hundred-plus more snaps that you take compared to the preseason games. Especially adding two more games late in the season, it doesn’t make any sense to me. I think 16 games is long enough.”
Many players agree. Others are willing to do it, if properly compensated.
Either way, the change seems inevitable -- even if it puts the NFL close to, and possibly beyond, the point of diminishing returns.
