Boldin Had Met With Other Agents Last Year

Here’s an interesting “rest of the story” regarding the recent decision of Cards receiver Anquan Boldin to change agents from Drew Rosenhaus to Tom Condon. Per a league source, Boldin conducted interviews of potential successors to Rosenhaus not last month, but last year. Specifically, Boldin met with Condon, Eugene Parker, and Kennard McGuire in November 2008, during the season. It’s unknown what prompted Boldin not to make a move late last year, or what ultimately caused him to pull the trigger more recently. Our belief has been that Boldin made the change simply because it’s the only thing that fell within the scope of his control. He couldn’t force the Cards to pay him or to trade him; he could hire a new agent. And so he did. Another possibility is that Rosenhaus might have been pushing Boldin to behave more like Terrell Owens circa 2005, but that Boldin declined. (That said, we’ve actually heard the opposite -- that Boldin wanted to skip offseason workouts this year and that Rosenhaus talked him into showing up.) Then there’s the Twitter theory. Multiple league sources speculate that Boldin was turned off by Rosenhaus’ prolific -- and superficial -- use of the device, and that this was the catalyst for Boldin to finish what he started last year. Regardless of the specific reason, it’s now clear that this is a move that Boldin had contemplated not for days, but for months.
