Bridgewater, Vikings focus on downfield passing game

The Vikings want quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to trust the deep ball more than he has in his first two NFL seasons.

It’s been a point of emphasis in their formal offseason program, which wraps up with these week’s minicamp. Back in April, Bridgewater gathered most of his wide receivers and tight ends in Florida for workouts that have been dubbed “Teddy Two Gloves Passing Academy,” and they worked on downfield connections then, too.

Goofy names aside, the goal has been for Bridgewater to let it rip.

“It’s just finishing throws,” Bridgewater said, per The Pioneer Press. “We put the tape on of last year, and there were a bunch of throws where I probably wasn’t finishing.”

Last week, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said that Bridgewater has matured and is showing a greater comfort level with all of his throws. At minicamp, Zimmer said the Vikings are focused on improving and trusting the deep ball.

“There was a play last week that kind of showed me the progression,” Zimmer said "[Bridgewater] saw the safety bite a little bit and just hung it right down the middle of the field about 55 yards and a perfect strike.

“So those are the kind of things I see (that) two years ago or even early last year, I don’t think he would have done. He just looks more comfortable and confident.”
